Born at Philadelphia November 18, 1872, educated in the public schools of Philadelphia, graduated from the Manual Training High School in 1889, entered the Wharton School of the University of Penn- sylvania, and graduated from that institution in 1891, receiving the degree of Ph.B., left immediately for Europe, where he studied for nearly ten years. Of this period, over three years were spent in Ger- many, at the Universities of Halle, Berlin, Leipzig and Vienna, from Halle University he received in the early part of 1895 the degree of Ph.D., with the honorable mention of magna cum laude. publishing as his thesis a volume on Thuenen's Theory of Value.
