The History of the Bateman School The Bateman School, which now occupies the mansion of the late Cyrus McCormick, was founded at 1106 Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, in 1937. This is the year that the Director, Miss Alice C. Bateman, graduated from the Department of Education of Northwestern University. Chicago's need for a co -educational, non-sectarian and democratic school was proven within three years' time. Five eager students were in attendance the first day school opened at 1106 Lake Shore Drive. Three years later it was necessary to find another location to allow for additional space. The school was moved to 1000 Lake Shore Drive to accommodate the enrollment of 310 students in the fall of 1941. At the close of the first year at 1000 Lake Shore Drive, the parents requested that a high school be added, and it was agreed that the Director would add a year of high school each successive year. ln 1949 the school graduated its first senior high school class of fourteen students. All these pupils were able to enter college without examinations, as the Bateman School had attained accreditation from the Office of Public Instruction at Springfield. In the spring of 1950 a corporation was formed. It purchased the former home of Cyrus McCormick, at 20 East Burton Place, as the new site for the school. The school received its full accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, which covers the accreditation of Colleges and Secondary Schools in nineteen states, and which is recognized throughout the country as well as abroad. At the present time there are approximately 300 studenis enrolled in the school. The classes include every level from Kindergarten through to the senior year of High School. 2
