Senior Class History The Class of 53 took its first step in 1941 toward the top of a flight of twelve steps in the Batavia School. We soon learned we would be required to travel up eight steps to get to the first landing and four more steps to get to the second landing of our stairway of success. The followingi is an account of the class of 53 climbing that stairway in the Batavia School. Step Number One: September 1, 1941---May 15, 1942 We were helped up the first step by our teacher Mrs. Hilda Coleman. The climbers of the class of 53 were as follows: Jacqueline Ann Coleman, Flint Garrison, Terry Lowenberg, Stanley McC1eary Geneva Silver, and Louis Walker. At the end of the first half step Geneva Silver and Flint Garrison decided to climb another stairway. At the end of the year, Jacqueline Ann Coleman also decided to climb a new stairway. The remainder of the class was transferred to the second step. Step Number Two: August 31, 1942---May 14, 1943 Mrs. Ruth Salts guided us over the second step. Shirley Brown, Lu Ann Gorman, and Ronald Coffin transferred to our stairway at the beginning of the year. Allen Morrison joined us when he stumbled and spent two years on the second step, but he transferred to another stairway during the first six weeks. Robert Briggs, Kay Kearns, and Dick Carter joined us at the beginning of the second semester. Kay Kearns transferred to another stairway at the end of this session. After successfully completing the second step, our class was transferred to the third step. Step Number Three: August 31, 1943---May 15, 1944 We are now at the third step ,with Mrs. Frances Spees showing us the way. Billy Ross joined our stairway at the beginning of the step. Ronald Coffin stumbled and fell back to the second step shortly after we began the third step. Phyllis Miller and Larc Smith joined our stairway at the be- ginning of the second semester but they left again at the end of that term. At the end of this step we were moved to the fourth step. Step Number Four: September 4, 1944---May 16, 1945 ' This step was under the guidance of Miss Francis Armstrong. Our class was increased to nine when Larry Randell joined the fourth step of our stairway, but it decreased again when he left the first six weeks of the term. After finishing step number four the remainder of our class transferred to step number five. Step Number Five: September 3, 1945---May 17, 1946 Mrs. Mary Louise Whitham was our teacher for step number five. Delores Halbleib, Bernie Padget and Richard Ludwig joined our stairway at the beginning of the term. Delores Halbleib, Bob Briggs, and Richard Ludwig transferred to another stairway at the end of the first semester. Shirley Major joined our stairway at the start of the second semester. Bernie Padget decided to transfer to another stairway at the end of step number five. At the end of the second semester, we were found qualified and were transferred to step six. 14
