We soon learned we would be required to travel up eight steps to get to the first landing and four more steps to get to the second landing of our stairway of success. The followingi is an account of the class of 53 climbing that stairway in the Batavia School. Step Number One: September 1, 1941---May 15, 1942 We were helped up the first step by our teacher Mrs. Hilda Coleman. The climbers of the class of 53 were as follows: Jacqueline Ann Coleman, Flint Garrison, Terry Lowenberg, Stanley McC1eary Geneva Silver, and Louis Walker. At the end of the first half step Geneva Silver and Flint Garrison decided to climb another stairway. At the end of the year, Jacqueline Ann Coleman also decided to climb a new stairway. The remainder of the class was transferred to the second step. Step Number Two: August 31, 1942---May 14, 1943 Mrs. Ruth Salts guided us over the second step. Shirley Brown, Lu Ann Gorman, and Ronald Coffin transferred to our stairway at the beginning of the year. Allen Morrison joined us when he stumbled and spent two years on the second step, but he transferred to another stairway during the first six weeks. Robert Briggs, Kay Kearns, and Dick Carter joined us at the beginning of the second semester. Kay Kearns transferred to another stairway at the end of this session. After successfully completing the second step, our class was transferred to the third step. Step Number Three: August 31, 1943---May 15, 1944 We are now at the third step ,with Mrs. Frances Spees showing us the way. Billy Ross joined our stairway at the beginning of the step. Ronald Coffin stumbled and fell back to the second step shortly after we began the third step. Phyllis Miller and Larc Smith joined our stairway at the be- ginning of the second semester but they left again at the end of that term. At the end of this step we were moved to the fourth step. Step Number Four: September 4, 1944---May 16, 1945 ' This step was under the guidance of Miss Francis Armstrong. Our class was increased to nine when Larry Randell joined the fourth step of our stairway, but it decreased again when he left the first six weeks of the term. After finishing step number four the remainder of our class transferred to step number five. Step Number Five: September 3, 1945---May 17, 1946 Mrs. Mary Louise Whitham was our teacher for step number five. Delores Halbleib, Bernie Padget and Richard Ludwig joined our stairway at the beginning of the term. Delores Halbleib, Bob Briggs, and Richard Ludwig transferred to another stairway at the end of the first semester. Shirley Major joined our stairway at the start of the second semester. Bernie Padget decided to transfer to another stairway at the end of step number five. At the end of the second semester, we were found qualified and were transferred to step six. 14 Step Number Six: September 2, 1946---May 18, 1947 Mrs. Mary Louise Whitham returned to become our teacher while on step number six. Charles May and Merwyn Sedore joined us at the beginning of this step. Merwyn Sedore decided to transfer to another stairway at the end of step number six. The Climbers of 53 were eligible and were moved to step number seven. Step Number Seven: September 1, 1947---May 13, 1948 We started step number seven under the supervision of Mrs. Ethel Morrison. Delores Halbleib, Patricia Palmer, and Larc Smith joined the stairway of the Batavia School at the beginning of the step. Delores Halbleib, Charles May, Larc Smith, and Billy Ross transferred to another stairway at the end of the seventh step. We were found able to carry eighth step work and were transferred to it. Step Number Eight: August 30, l948--- May 19, 1949 A On step number eight, we are still under the guidance of Mrs. Ethel Morrison. We now find ourselves standing on the first landing of the Batavia School stairway. Phyllis Bailey, Mary Ruth Wheeldon, Richard Walker, and Bernie Padget increased our class to eleven. At the end of the step, Bernie Padget left- We have successfully completed step eight and find ourselves ready for B. H. S. Step Number Nine: September 6, 1949---May 10, 1950 Entered in good old B. H.S., we find a new staff of advisers, Mr. Wood, Mr. Barker, Mr. Kunzman, and Mrs. Black. Those present on the ninth step are as follows: Phyllis Bailey, Shirley Brown, Terry Lowenberg, Stanley McCleary, Lu Ann Gorman, Shirley Major, Patricia Palmer, Mary Wheeldon, Richard Walker, Louis Walker, and four new students, Jean Silver, Marilyn Eaves, Jerry and Larry Davis. With delight, we were permitted to go to the tenth step. Step Number Ten: September 5, 1950---May 21, 1951 There was one change in our advisers. Mr. Fleming took the place of Mr. Barker. Mr. Fleming brought his daughter, Charlene, to our class on the step. Larry Park also joined our class because of illness the year before. Stanley McC1eary left us to join the Navy during this step. At this time, we find ourselves equipped for the eleventh step. Step Number Eleven: September 3, 1951---May 23, 1952 There was no change in our advisers on this step. We had one new student, Carol Newquist, join us the second semester. She left us at the end of this step. We found ourselves prepared for the final step and were transferred to step number twelve. Step Number Twelve: September 2, 1952---May 28, 1953 Still there are no changes in our advisers. The faithful students that came to complete step number twelve are as follows: Shirley Brown, Marilyn Eaves, Charlene Fleming, Terry Lowenberg, Larry Park, Jerry and Larry Davis, Lu Ann Gorman, Shirley Major, Patricia Palmer, Jean Silver, Richard Walker, Mary Wheeldon, and Louis Walker, Terry Lowenberg and Louis Walker faithfully completed all twelve steps at the Batavia School. The class of 53 wishes to thank all our teachers who have so patiently guided us up the twelve steps of the Batavia School's stairway to success. Louis Walker 15 Senior Class Prophecy It is now May 28, 1963. Ten years have passed since the Senior Class of '53 proudly walked Off the Siage of B- H.5- with their diplomas clutched tightly in their hands. As we fLu Ann and Shirley B.1 bade our classmates goodbye, we promised them we would visit each of them ten years later. So here we are ready to start. Our first classmate to visit is Richard Walker. Richard lives in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He owns a big dairy farm there: when we get there, Richard is just finishing his milking. He said he moved to Pine Bluff because the name fit him so well In Dick's spare time he runs a pool hall in Pine Bluff. Dick tells us that Terry Lowenberg lives in Texas so we board the train for Texas. As we get into Texas the first town we come to is Lovelady Springs. This is where Terry lives. He owns a big cattle ranch there. He is married and has five little helpers. We visit with Terry awhile and start for Montana. The former Charlene Fleming and her husband, Pep, with their twin sons, Pepsi and Cola are at the station to meet us. The name of the town is Two Dot. We go to their home and have a long visit with them. We find out that Charlene is a registered nurse. After our visit we board the train for Carson, Oregon. Jean Silver is a lawyer in Carson. She hasn't been married yet but has a string of boy friends she can count on. We leave Jean and go to Hollywood, California. Mary Wheeldon is a sales lady in lrwin's Store for Women. She and her husband, Bill, own the store. We buy a new wardrobe of clothes from her and go on to Fort Brag, California, now Louis Walker's home town. Louis owns a big roller skating rink in Fort Brag. Louis is married and has three children. They are good skaters just like Louis. Go and see Louis sometime and maybe he'll teach you how to skate. One of our classmates still lives in Batavia so we board the train for Batavia. Batavia has grown in ten years. We go up to the square dance and find Shirley Major. Shirley isn't married yet but her third finger, left hand is flashing a big diamond. We spend the night in Batavia. The next morning we eat breakfast at the restaurant that Shirley runs. We then board the train for Marblehead, Wisconsin. We rent a car to tour the city and accidently run a stop sign. A cop stopped us and it was none other than Larry Davis. We talked him out of giving us a ticket and went to eat dinner with him He told us that Larry Park lived in Mooseheart, Illinois. We were going to go to Mooseheart next so Larry went along with us. When we got to Mooseheart we started to look Larry up. We met him on the street. He was headed for the big ball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Philadelphia Philies. Larry plays on the Chicago Cubs team. We went along with Larry to the ball game and watched him play. After the game we went to his home and visited with him awhile. Larry has two little ones that are going to play on the team when they grow up too. Next on our list is Patty Palmer. We find Patty and her husband, Dean, at the station in Charleston, Indiana. They are just getting ready to go visit Mary and Bill so we don't bother them. We go on to Marblehead, Ohio. Jerry Davis lives in Marblehead. He had to live in a town by the same name as Larry's town since they are twins. Jerry owns a big farm near Marblehead. We visited with Jerry for a long time. Our last stop was Chattanooga, Tennessee. The former Marilyn Eaves, her husband, and their three children have a new ranch type house in the edge of Chattanooga. She and her husband own a Buick Garage there. Our promise to our classmates fulfilled we returned to our home on the sunny side of the street in Shadyside, Louisiana. 16 Senior Class Will We, the Senior Class of Batavia High School in the year one thousand nine hundred and fifty-three, being of sound mind and body, do hereby make this our last will and testament. 1, Richard Walker do hereby will my knack of sleeping in time of school to Leron Leazer and do also will my seat by the pencil sharpener to any Junior who is lucky enough to get it. Mr. Harry Wood, Superintendent Mrs. Myrtle Black, Annual Sponsor 18 Class Poem The Senior Class of fifty three, Is just as busy as can be, And it won't be long before you see Some Seniors graduate, oh me! In this poem I will try, To write a few lines to remember us by. Now Charlene Fleming isn't very tall, But she's quite a star in basketball. Terry Lowenberg is quite a guy. When it comes to girls, he isn't shy. Jean Silver is the studious one, But she still has lots of fun. Jerry Davis is a real he man. He thinks a lot of a girl named Lu Ann. Patty Palmer is always gay. She plans to get married some summer day. Larry Park has lots of pep. When it comes to sports, he's right in step. Mary Wheeldon who is friendly and nice, Is so cute, you always look twice. Richard Walker is pretty clever. To do something wrong, he would never. Marilyn Eaves is the girl who never gets mad. She is always friendly, happy and glad. Lu Ann Gorman who is always merry, Has but one flame and we all know it's Jerry. Larry Davis is a very nice boy. When Shir1ey's around, he's full of joy. Shirley Brown who is cute and neat, Thinks that being with Larry is quite a treat. Louis Walker is a ladies' man, And of all kinds of sports he is quite a fan. Shirley Major who isn't at all shy, Makes the boys all whistle when she passes by To close this poem and make it rhyme.
