Page One 11'1uul1'ed Bee Aiich E55 - 1912 Basket Ball. 191 1-12 HE basket-ball season of 1911-12 at Batavia high school was the most successful we have ever experienced. Witli the eflicient coach- ing of K. C. Merrick the team batiled to victory in twenty-seven out of twenty-nine games. l'Vinning the state championship advertised Batavia far and wide and was even the cause of the VVestern champs coming to Batavia on their trip east. The boys from the box car gym managed to take into camp such schools as Joliet, Rockford, Freeport, Elgin, etc. The teanrfought through the present season with the greatest of per- sistence. The obstacles which Batavia high has been compelled to meet have been many and varied. They have probably been the subject of more hard knocks than any team which won the honors which they gained. This has helped a great deal to keep the team from getting chesty, and the players eventually accepted the motto of Every knock a boost. However, the spirit of the fans has been something worthy of our heartiest thanks and appreciation. Every loyal, able bodied Batavian was on the job when he was able, and given the chance, to help. Wlieii money was needed it was not long in making its appearance. Nvhen the team stepped onto the floor at the sectional tournament at DeKalb, a mighty roar went up. VVhen they came to their senses they found that Batavia was not lacking in spirit for nearly every other seat was occupied by some Batavia person. Four hundred fans came to see that fray and the victory was celebrated with fireworks and much noise. A special train of four coaches took the crowd home that night, only to- re-celebrate when Batavia was reached. The state high school championship was won on March 9th at Gales- burg, and another celebration took place at Batavia that night with bon hres, ringing bells, blowing whistles, etc. The lncomparable Dutchman, together with Puck and Irish formed the nucleus of our Basket-ball lVIachine which was completed by the Modest Guards, keeping the opponents' score down, while the invincible trio rolled up our score. Much credit is due 'William A.- Buckner, the Wllite Sox baseball trainer who brought the team in such grand shape for the De Kalb Tournament. One need only to glance at the scores to see what condition did for the team. His services were paid for by the fans, also. , On the whole it seems that Batavia high school should ever be inspired by the rcmembrances of the basket-ball season of 1911-12, which was a. credit to Batavia and a pleasure to the team members. -CLARENCE R. HANSEN, '12.
