Witli the eflicient coach- ing of K. C. Merrick the team batiled to victory in twenty-seven out of twenty-nine games. l'Vinning the state championship advertised Batavia far and wide and was even the cause of the VVestern champs coming to Batavia on their trip east. The boys from the box car gym managed to take into camp such schools as Joliet, Rockford, Freeport, Elgin, etc. The teanrfought through the present season with the greatest of per- sistence. The obstacles which Batavia high has been compelled to meet have been many and varied. They have probably been the subject of more hard knocks than any team which won the honors which they gained. This has helped a great deal to keep the team from getting chesty, and the players eventually accepted the motto of Every knock a boost. However, the spirit of the fans has been something worthy of our heartiest thanks and appreciation. Every loyal, able bodied Batavian was on the job when he was able, and given the chance, to help. Wlieii money was needed it was not long in making its appearance. Nvhen the team stepped onto the floor at the sectional tournament at DeKalb, a mighty roar went up. VVhen they came to their senses they found that Batavia was not lacking in spirit for nearly every other seat was occupied by some Batavia person. Four hundred fans came to see that fray and the victory was celebrated with fireworks and much noise. A special train of four coaches took the crowd home that night, only to- re-celebrate when Batavia was reached. The state high school championship was won on March 9th at Gales- burg, and another celebration took place at Batavia that night with bon hres, ringing bells, blowing whistles, etc. The lncomparable Dutchman, together with Puck and Irish formed the nucleus of our Basket-ball lVIachine which was completed by the Modest Guards, keeping the opponents' score down, while the invincible trio rolled up our score. Much credit is due 'William A.- Buckner, the Wllite Sox baseball trainer who brought the team in such grand shape for the De Kalb Tournament. One need only to glance at the scores to see what condition did for the team. His services were paid for by the fans, also. , On the whole it seems that Batavia high school should ever be inspired by the rcmembrances of the basket-ball season of 1911-12, which was a. credit to Batavia and a pleasure to the team members. -CLARENCE R. Bee Aiich E55 - 1912 Page One H7l7ld7'6d T hiriy-T h-ree The Championship Games fin Detail, 'Twas a February morning, and on the twenty-third, The hnal call for Championship we all had plainly heard. Our High School team was ready, with rooters just a few- Bound for old DeKalb town, to see what they could do. The players went on business, not on pleasure bent, They went to claim the honors in the High School Tournament. The classes from the High School bade a glad farewell- In hopes to be successful and victory to spell. Vve reached our destination, just about at noon, Conhdent and happy as we'd be a day in June. p Strolling thro' the city, strolling up and down, At leisure walked our people as if they owned the town. We went to the gymnasium and found a place to sit: A place which had a graveyard on ev'ry side of it. Nevertheless we entered, regardless of all means- The place filled toits limit, and packed in like sardines. The basket-balls were thumping, waiting was not long- Then DeKalb and Hinsdale were ready for the gong Instructions then were given to each team's eager man, After which-the whistle-and the Tournament began. Starting like a whirlwind, DeKalb took quite a lead, lt seemed the Hinsdale players, their signals did not heed. Neither used much team work, it should have brought a hiss-- VVhen nearly ev'ry player would throw a hit or miss. But still the game amused us, they kept right at the grind- VVith Hinsdale working furiously to comeiup from behind. The game was full of free throws, which Hinsdale threw first rateg DeKalb, the hrst half gathered, thirteen to l'linsdale's eight. l2v'ryone was happy and practising their cheers- Cheers we will remember, for years and years and years. After intermission the same teams trotted out-- ' They looked to be quite equal, the outcome was in doubt. They played the second spasm, as they did the first, Wlien Hinsdale, energetic, rallied with a burst. The final gong was sounded, DeKalb one point aheadg Officials checked the scorebooks, a tie was found 'twas said. rg. ,, I. L.m'x Q-...e.snsfe.-. - M.. ...... .. , 'I . Fisk deserved the credit, DeKalb's lonestar was he- After scoring twenty-one of their total twenty-three. Belvidere and Rockford, then came out to play,- They seemed intent to battle, and looking for their prey. The B's broke loose and started, Rockford looked with awe- VVhen basket after basket, and Belvidere they saw. One man on Belvidere's team, clean cut for his work- XlVifllOUt his shoes or stockings played, as would a Turk. He minded not appearance and laughed at ridiculeg Used his whole ambition, in honor of his school. Rockford had the ginger, but still of no availg They lacked in hopeful places, which left their chances pale. King-the B's tall center, could make points in the dark, So tall that if he'd fallen, he'd have reached to Maple Park. VVhen the lirst half of their trouble, ev'rybody 'd seen- All that Rockford had was eight, the B's had seventeen. So far things went nicely, full of interestg The bitter rivals then advanced, and to complete the test. Rockford showed up better but could not catch their foes, They sadly were defeated and went to their repose. Thirty-live to twenty-six, ended this conclave, Mournfully the Rockfords were laid.into their grave. Our routers' eyes then opened, the next-the day's best bet- To watch dear old Batavia, clash with Joliet. ' Vile much despised these rivals, our treatment at their town, 'Twould be a battle royal to see which team went down. 'Twas just about a minute, Joliet then showed- Followed by Batavia, who emerged from their abode. Our trainer, Mr. Buckner, his restoratives brought, Piled into a corner, just the place he sought. The gold and crimson players started out like mad- To see their clever team work gave us a feeling glad. They kept the ball 'a moving and held their tactics firm- 'Till Irish showed the symptoms of his same old basket germ. Excitement raged intensely, the foes used all their vim- ' But couldn't have made a basket if they'd sat upon the rim. VVe were there to beat them, to try at any rate, To play them to the line points, to make them navigate. ' . - Bee A itch E55-1912 Page One Hundred Thirty-Five Our enemies got busy and gave us quite a chase, They saw us making baskets and joined us in the race. We didn't give them many, we kept them in the soup-- Wliile we were feeling happy and playing loop the loop. . Barr pulled himself together and started on a trot- Stabbed the pill at center, then made a pretty shot. He went into the mixup, time and time again, His anxious work for honors made him foul now and then. Each one did his duty, not one of them fell short- In striving for the title, they added to the sport. The lirst half was Batavia's, our boys all had a line, That they had Joliet hested atseventeen to nine. All of the other rooters were opposed to us, ' There wasn't quite enough of us to make a noisy fuss. But that did not annoy us, we knew we had a show-- That looked as 'good as any, we'd make them all look slow. Then the war continued, we kept right up in front, lvhile Joliet fought fiercely, but couldn't do the stunt, They'd played about ten minutes, both centers chased the hall: Yvith a clash they came together and thumped against the wall. Hamilton-Ioliet's center, the same old red-haired lad, l'Accidentally mixed with Dutch, we didn't know how had. lt looked as though their center did not try to avert- 'l'he bump which then resulted in centers being hurt. They both stretched out exhausted, the two were given care, lt could have been avoided, the trick was done unfair. But smiling Wm. Buckner, our trainer with the dope -- - Doctored Mr. Trantow, which brought about new hope. A plan to fix our Trantowg it surely was a bit Of Fortune's clever dealings when they had the worst of it. VVe knew our rival's feelings, their center, forwards, guards, They all should have their pictures on penny postal cards. After their revival, play was then resumed- We played them all the stronger and Joliet was doomed. The final toot was sounded, we left them in a hx, Our rivals counted nineteen--we counted twenty-six. ' Our little band of rooters, with cheers that sounded meek- Remembered what they handed us down there the previous week. VVe beat them at the odd game and made their crew disperse, VVe shipped them back to prison, carried by a hearse. ,..f zf 1' ','1'rff1rm1fsavf1wma+vmwnvww,. -.-- um, -- . .........,.,..,.-....,,,, ,,,.,,w,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,W,,,, J Q Page One Ifzuzdred Ylzrirty-Six Bee Aitch E55 - 1912 i l olo and New lrier, then went at the game, - il wo teams we hadn t scheduled, but neither had much fame lhese lives were quick in trav ling, their team work had no class- -- New Iirici beat the Polos in nearly ev ry pass A i lhey both relied on luck shots, those long ones they no doubt- l 4 Could make once out of fifty, that kind you read about ' New Trier kept their rivals on one continuous run, i Polo finally succumbed, thirty-nine to thirty-one i WVith the afternoon games over and folks had had their fill- ?-: lhose hlgin sports and lireeport, were next upon the bill W li. en before the game time, 'twas hardly eight o clock l :ig WVe surely caught an eyefull of that sporty Elgin ' stock. With Hinsdale seven points behind, approaching, very queer, They dropped their only fighting chance--away went Belvidere. And they kept a healthy margin, many points they stirred, Were going like a cyclone when the final sound was heard. Thirty-eight to nineteen, stopped that massacre - VVe patiently awaited, the next one to occur. Again we saw Batavia, fresh as e'er before, Advance to warm their bodies, and murder Sycamore. . We'd heard their reputation, you might say 'twas a hunch, That we would pass the gravy, and take them for free lunch. Feldott, Barr, and Trantow, in a corner then we saw, Trantow, in a blanket like a burly Indian Squaw. At center we had Emigh, Chick and Bone were in, Otherwise the lineup was the same as it had been. Ev'ry time we counted, they would do the same, They made most points on free throws, on field goals they were lame. Bone and Hansen guarded well, did ev'rything they should-- And kept the team work tightened the very best they could. VVhen the second half was started, our boys took vim anew- To hold the foes at their hfteen, and raise our twenty-two. e After intermission, McDern1ott must have said, Now, boys, just rub your eyelids and tumble out of bed. lVith the second half in progress, from Puck to substitute, VVhen irish made a basket, they'd duly follow suit. Then all became spectacular, and very picturesque: All of our noted actors were indul ed in a burles ue. Q g fl Our boys were makin baskets, too fast to understand, l . O g t 0 Bailev tried to sto three times but didn't have the sand. . P More details here are useless, the people had to laugh, VVith S. H. S. and Joliet, upon an epitaph. Each one of our players, was tired of making points- VVhile Sycamore had withered and stiffened in the joints. Spectators then made exit, before the game was thro' Before the grand finale, there sat a very few. Dutch and Barr were tired of looking at the freaks, So they jumped into the pastime, to show their Hue physiques. .v..,.a.x-vtwst-ue..-..-,4 'va --f,-,-if-, X-...,.-..a.. ..-s-M.. -e..-.., ...-....-..,... .....- .n Page One Ifumired YW iffy-Eight Bee Aitclz Ess - 1912 Dutch threw ev'ry free throw, a master at the art- While all our other players rested at their part. Fifty-six to twenty-six, his fantasma ceased- We'd had success on Friday, two games had been a feast As previously stated, to us, folks were opposedg ' l'Ve entertained a message, happy news disclosed. On Saturday at noontime we met Batavia's throng, Adorned with pretty pcnnants, they came three hundred strong. At two the gym was crowded, and ev'ry seat was sold- Many of them taken by the Crimson and the Gold. The cheering was tremendous, a deafening hubbub- ' No crowd could drown the cheering of Batavia's Linde Fisk Club. Batavia played 'gainst Belvidere, each one took up their role- Eager for a mixup, nearing Champions' goal. Our foes had heard what we were, but were hungry for a hghtg But when Dutch went into action, they lost their appetite. iVe took a lead of seven, Belvidere then tried To catch us in a hurry, but that we just delied. VVe eas'ly had their number, we'd never stop or tire, Good luck with ev'ry basket throw-just throw and holler- l7ire.l' The lirst half had concluded, we'd gathered two times ten- Our foes had counted fifteen when all commenced again. ' Somehow the same old fever by Irish, Dutch and Puck - liept Belvidere from trav'ling when they saw the pace we struck. Puck was forced to jump it with the rival's barefoot lad- 'l'heir player had no shoes on and things looked kind 'a bad. Puck left the terra lirma but weakened in his knees- . Alighting on his rival's little pedal extremities. Belvidcre's tall center worked real hard to win- A model as a player and of superb discipline. X'Vhile jumping near the steam pipes he made a fearless try- And thus met with misfortuneg cut a gash above his eye. Two or three small stitches and a little piece of gauze- Brought him back to battle, which met with great applause. Forty-six to twenty-Eve, they recognized defeat- ' Our boys then donned their sweaters and made their third retreat. The Lucie Fisk Club went crazy, they all were in the fun, We were to play the finals, one more-and only one. The cheering was tremendous, all went very well- F.v ryone screeched and howled in one continuous yell. Freeport s players entered, were welcomed by a cheer From all the fallen heroes, excluding Belvidere. They played around the baskets, practiced their free throws Anxiously awaiting the entry of their foes. Finally they entered-soine noise upon the breeze, Our boys with gorgeous costumes and line anatomies. The Bon Ton boys took practice-their ordinary mot And smiled to hear the rooters, at intervals, explode. Our boys were then instructed--nothing to avoid, But run them 'till their kneecaps were as thin as celluloidf' A noise-it was the whistle, the last game then began, Not afraid of accident was ev'ry heartless man. Dutch went into the corner and grabbed the basket pill- And let us know the reason why he was on the bill.' A rival tried to steal it, never did we fret, Dutch had him hors de combat, then pushed one thro' the net. Bailey, Trantow and Irish, in defense, were hard as rock, In fact the five were working like an old reliable clock. Then Freeport, energetic, against a five point lead- Climbed a little closer when they increased their speed. Freeport worked as ne'er before, and trailing close behind- Made some ,fancy passes, some, the dang'rous kind. Batavia made a foul, guilty Charlie Barr- VVhen en route to the basket he had Marathonned too far. They took the point and followed with a neat goal from the field- Also had a few good trys, but no points did they yield. A long pass from a rival was very badly hurt- VVhen Emigh raised his lunch hooks and took it as dessert. The rivals, after pounding, finally tied our score- And broke it rather quickly, snatching up two more. In brief, Barr made some free throws, the rival's score stood still YVhene'er they threw high passes, Emigh would stab the pill. A They pestered at the basket, but just a trifle late, Some player on the B. I-I. S. relieved them of the weight Our signals Via VVireless, removed the doubtful lid, Four oints in tuick succession, is what our la ers did. s P 1 P Y I Dutch and Puck and all the rest, were stars we will confess- But the stalwart ulrishl' beauty made those four for B. H. S. Bone and 'Chick were playing when the final toot was blown, A free throw by the Freeports, had, just before, been thrown. Reader-if you were not there-imagine-then, you must, Batavia's celebration when Freeport bit the dust. In difiicult predicaments, Batavia's na-tive sons, Had been the pick of students, few, but came out-cluzmpions. The season's brief renewal of all their previousgames, ' Omitting dates and scores made-and giving just the names. , The hrst game of the season, Batavia eas'ly won- Defeating the DeKalb boys, in DeKalb the trick was done. Then at old Batavia, Crane--Batavia, beat, And on the Friday foll'wing Wendell Phillips met defeat. A Away from home they went again, just went up to see , How well they could shoot baskets in winning from Dundee. DeKalb then came to our town, we must have had a frost, 'Cause no one knew the reason why B. H. S. had lost. The Xmas week attraction, brought another crown, lVhen Elgin's gay Collegians by our boys were put down. The first game of the New Year, brought another win-- Rockford's basket shooters had to take their medicine. Hinsdale, our next victims, proved an easy mark- The next was won at college rules, gently from Oak Park. On the Friday after this game, fast bunch, Batavia met, Same old stuff as usual, defeated Joliet. Then came the sports from Elgin, another easy prey: Northwestern Freshmen followed-one more which went our way. On Abra'am Lincoln's birthday, with large crowd there to root- Batavia stole a game away from Lewis Institute. Up to date that's all I have, I might have missed but two, Nevertheless the record is too good to be true. Regarding circumstances, taken all in all- Batavia has the artists at the game of basket-hall. The players did their duty, though Irish, Dutch and Puck Created most disturbance, we wish them all-good luck.
