H. S. To express this idea, we chose our theme, Through the Lens. We-hope our various changes such as the arrangement of Senior pictures, and larger pages on which this book is printed, make the '59 Batavion the best ever. The hard work---and fun, too---which have gone into this year's annual make it our pride and ioy. Ntulix N lf, A x l I I t S Class History ,jk , As we look back over our years as a class, we have many memories. When we entered our freshman year in the fall of '55, few of us gave much thought to being seniors. Those were the good old days when we weren't worried about college a plicarions, iob placements, and certification. We went to the J. O. dances and could now attend many senior high activities. In voting for J. O. Council, we elected Paul Huff, Barb Sanborn, Bonnie Young, Ed- die Belles, and Gail Biddlecombe. We began our sophomore year under the guidance of Miss Gehring. Sophomore sister week, voting for class of- ficers and mayor, as well, as participation insenior high activities, made us feel like an important part of senior high. As class officers we elected Dick Reinholtz, president, Sue Schrader, vice-president, Elaine Osborn, secre- tary, and Muriel Taber, treasurer. Andrea Gorecki, Gail Biddlecombe, and Ed Winslow represented us on council. We sponsored two dances that year, one after a football game and the other a semi-formal dance, April Showers, in the spring. That year we contributed to the AFS fund to sponsor BHS's first foreign exchange student. We eagerly started off our iunior year in September of '57. Our first proiect that year was to sponsor the first campaign dance. Now the candidates could hold their rallies and demonstrations at the dance, instead of at the nominating assembly and at campaign parties. We elected our first girl class president that year, Barb Sanborn. To assist her we elected Sue Schrader, vice-president, Gail Biddlecombe, secretary, and Mary Jane Johnson, treasur- er. Jeanette Wallace, Phil Archer, and Jack Motz were our council representatives. That year some boys trans- ferred to vocational school, but still remained active members of our class. ln November, we heard the long await- ed announcement, Class rings are herel This made us realize that we were well on our way toward the long a- waited year. This year for the first time the National Honor Society candidates were chosen in November, instead of in the spring, as had been done previously. We once more contributed to the AFS fund, and from four elected students, Andy McWain was chosen to represent our school that summer in Germany. Our important social event was a dance in April, the Junior Prom. Barb Sanborn and Dick Reinholtz were our representatives to Boys' and Girls' State, and Gerry Claflin was awarded the Harvard Club Prize. Then IT finally came--OUR SENIOR YEAR! As part of the AFS program, Sezer Gokhan from Ankara, Turkey, ioined our class and soon became an active and po ular member. The fall of '58 was a busy one for all of us. Col- lege Applications: Another autobiography! --Scholarship Exams: What do they think we are, Einsteins? --Sen- ior Sophomore Sister Week: Remember, bow to all Seniorsl --and Elections. Our class once again sponsored the campaign dance--a lively success at which both our candidates for mayor, Dick Reinholtz and Phil Archer, staged demonstrations. Phil was elected, with Paul Huff as president, Sue Schrader, vice-president, Gail Biddlecombe, secretaryg and Mary Jane Johnson, treasurer. Sezer Gokhan, Barb Sanborn, Jeanette Wallace, and Jack Motz were our council delegates. We had a very exciting football season, with our team having an undefeated season and win- ning the western conference title. Our school play, Curtain Going Up was a great success, with many seniors in the cast. December came with the Chorister Concert, College Boards, and all the holiday festivities. After an es- pecially active vacation, we returned to begin earnest studying for mid-year exams. After exams, we found our- selves caught up once more in the wonderful whirl--basketball games, dances, parties, and-oh, yes--homework. ln February came our Senior Banquet, with its unforgettable theme This Old Gang of Mine. The student-faculty game, the trip to New York City, THE BALL, and, of course, Commencement are all part of the wonderful magical moments that made up OUR SENIOR YEAR. Our class members have distinguished themselves in many ways, both in scholarship and in sports. Barb Sanbom was ayvarded the DAR Good Citizenship Award, Judi Presberg, the Betty Crocker Homemaking Award, and Gerry Claflm, the Bausch and Lomb Science Award. Eleven seniors received state scholarship awards. ff Ffor heclping us in so many ways we will always be-grateful to our counselor, Miss Gehring. The amount of time, e or , an encouragement s e gave each one of us will long be remembered and appreciated. Miss Gehring and S. Schrader, vice-president: P. Huff, president, F V rwgifb ' . For the hungry B. H. S. students there is now a snack bar in the cafeteria after school. ln order to earn money, the Council installed a pencil machine next to the Main Office, a de- vice which dispenses blue pencils with Batavia High School printed on them. The Council sponsored Pagliacci's Playhouse, and spec- tator buses to the games, decorated the Christmas tree, par- ticipated in the Genesee Area Student Council, and raised the money needed to sponsor a foreign exchange student. F T This club, under the direction of Mr. Seymour, does a wonderful job of recruiting prospective teachers. During eighth period on Tuesdays, several members have been gaining teaching experience by helping and observing in the grade schools. This year, they hope to start a club at Notre Dame. The officers were Penny Bonarrigo, president, Joanne Kohl, vice-president, Helen Mack, secretary, and Frances Petronio, treasurer. 0 This year's Service League, an organization of iunior and senior girls, served our school and community in many ways. Service was given the school by the girls selling refreshments at basket- ball games, ushering at the school play and graduation, and checking wraps. Service was given the community at the installation of the clial system. By ushering, the girls earned fifty dollars, which they donated to the A. F. S. fund. The campaign for subscriptions was conducted by means of posters at the Washington and Ross Street Schools, rather than an assembly.
