Foreword Glancing through this 1958 Batavian you will encounter rockets, planets, and such up-to-date terms as satellite and ICBM, all because of our theme, Geophysical Year. Expressing our theme in pen and ink was not hardp we can't quite say the same about the stories. The story is, of course, this school year in Batavia Junior-Senior High School. A few changes have been made in the telling, the most outstanding being the creation of a Features Section and the addition of four new pages. The Senior Section, too, is presented in a new way. We hope you see these changes as improvements. lt was fun-and hard work, too--to make this l958 Batavian. We hope you like your book and that many years hence, as you glance through these pages, you will recall the many friends and good times shared here. 2

,..cl A K M,-av-duff Dexter Pierce, M. D. In Memoriam Dr. Pierce was our school physician from l945 to l957. We remember him best by his kind heart and love for young people. He is remembered by all Batavians driving his 1941 gray Chevy convertible with youngsters spilling over the sides. Nothing pleased him more than to have one of us drop in iust to talk to him. At every home game we could see Dr. Pierce on the bench, ready to attend any injured youngster. His sense of humor and his friendliness will long live in the hearts of all who knew him. 4
