Expressing our theme in pen and ink was not hardp we can't quite say the same about the stories. The story is, of course, this school year in Batavia Junior-Senior High School. A few changes have been made in the telling, the most outstanding being the creation of a Features Section and the addition of four new pages. The Senior Section, too, is presented in a new way. We hope you see these changes as improvements. lt was fun-and hard work, too--to make this l958 Batavian. We hope you like your book and that many years hence, as you glance through these pages, you will recall the many friends and good times shared here. 2 ,iylm WWWQW fgwww i I f D' Co tens Mi S M 1 ' - I InM ria . In Memoriam Dr. Pierce was our school physician from l945 to l957. We remember him best by his kind heart and love for young people. He is remembered by all Batavians driving his 1941 gray Chevy convertible with youngsters spilling over the sides. Nothing pleased him more than to have one of us drop in iust to talk to him. At every home game we could see Dr. Pierce on the bench, ready to attend any injured youngster. His sense of humor and his friendliness will long live in the hearts of all who knew him. 4 X A .- Qi, -F' 4 Z X Z Yo. SEATED: Mr, Sherman F, Babcock, Mr, Edward L. Under the guidance of Miss McLellan, we started our freshman year with the election of Linda Corey, Sally Bannister, Dan Babcock, Phil Nerber, and Phil Tubiolo to the J.O. Council. The J.O. Council enjoyed a very successful year and sponsored many activities. Be- sides contributing to the purchase of waste receptacles, they also sponsored the Fall Frolic. An inaugural step was the issuing of J. O. membership cards to all iunior high school students. Under the guidance of Mr. Spaulding, we really tried to make our sophomore year the greatest. Our class officers were Dan Babcock, president, Sylvia Byrne, vice-president, Phil Tubiolo, treasurer, and Linda Corey, secretary. Grace Lowe, Dan Babcock, and Chris Kas- sianos were the council members. During the year, Lynne Collins won first place in the Girls' Speaking Contest. For the cross-country team, the best time was turned in by Bill Merton--I2 minutes, 50 seconds for 2 V2 miles. The fall of 56 found us coming back to school, feeling much older and wiser as juniors. Our class was led by: President, Dave Morgan, vice-president, Jack Parsons, secretary, Eve Bundrock, and treasurer, Gail Kornowski. Elected to the Council were Dave Morgan, Dan Babcock, Sally Bannister, and Linda Corey. Robert Russell was chosen as the Vocational School representative to the Council. In the school play, Books and Crooks, Doug McCurdy had a lead part which he played superbly. This year the Harvard Club Prize was awarded to Dick Morith. Linda Corey and Jack Parsons were chosen as the Girls' and Boys' State Represent atives. With the arrival of the class rings we knew that we would soon be seniorsl Seniors at last, and with the beginning of the school year came the campaign parties for mayor. This election was unusual because for the first time in BHS history a girl was elected mayor. And Grace Lowe has proved to be a very competent mayor too. To help Grace through the year, Dan Babcock was chosen president, Dick Burleigh, vice-president, Bill Wagner, treasurer, and Eve Bundrock, secretary. Our Student Council representatives were Phil Nerber, 14 CLASS OFFICERS: R.Bur1eigh, vice-president: D.Babcock, president: W.Wagner, treasurerg E.Bundrock, secretary. f 'sd -v Sally Bannister, and Linda Corey. Bill Kunze was our foreign exchange student from Germany. Anthony Tiberio and Dave Wood, as captains to the football team, had a great year. Dave was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award, and Anthony was the highest scorer in the Western New York Football League. The Choristers sang For the New York State Music Association this year at Rochester, New York, in addition to their usual Christmas Concert over a national network. The work of our class leaders made our Senior Banquet, with the theme Whatever Will Be, Will Be, something we will always remember. The greatest year of all came to a close with the Senior Ball and Commencement. Although Mr. Spaulding could not be with us this year, we will always remember the aid he has given us. Also we will never forget the wonderful assistance that Miss Brumsted has given us this year. Even though we are leaving BHS to take our place in the world, we will never forget the nostalgic experiences that we had at our Alma Mater. Banquet scene. Dance after the Banquet. H.S. has had a first this year -- a GIRL was elected mayor. Grace Lowe had the privilege and honor of being chosen by her fellow classmates to the office of mayor. The Council represents the whole student body in school affairs. The fifteen members plan the school calendar, sponsor spectator buses to games, decorate the Christmas tree and are the steer- ing committee for Pagliacci's Playhouse. Another first this year was being host to our A. F.S. student, Wilfried Kunze. The Council also sold A.F.S. cookbooks as part of the Western New York A. F.S. Committee. An assembly for a panel of exchange students and campaign to raise a scholarship fund of S650 for next year was sponsored . The Council, participating with the Genesee Area Student Council Association, gave a dinner and dance for all the area National Honor Society members. The officers were Grace Lowe, mayor, Daniel Babcock, vice-president, Linda Corey, secre- tary, Philip Nerber, treasurer, and Mr. Sanborn, advisor. The Blue Devils got off to a slow start, dropping their first two games, but then went on to win the next 9 out of I0 played before losing to Hornell. In the sectional playoffs, Batavia dropped a close one to Wellsville at Perry. Nearly all the games this year were very close battles, which made them very exciting for the spectators. This year's Cross-Country Team made an outstanding showing, even though it marks only the second year BHS has had a Cross-Country Team. The Batavians lost only one meet while winning four. ln the LeRoy meet, BHS had a score of l5 to LeRoy's 52, which is considered a perfect score in Cross-Country. lThe team having the lowest total number of points is the winner in Cross-Country competitioml In a meet held at Terry Hills golf course, this year's harriers emerged victors, to become the Genesee-Wyoming county champions. In the Section Five Playoffs at Hobart College, Batavia placed sixth in a field of twenty-six. The Co-captains were Don Wolff and Jack Parsons. The team was ably coached by Mr. Ricci and his assistant coach, Al Heiner. Last spring 057, our BHS Track and Field Team, captained by Bill Pres- ton, had a promising season. They began by dropping their first two meets, the first one being to Alden 65 to 32 and the second one to Brockport 6l to 32. The team then attended the l5th annual Alden Invitational Meet, where they finished 8th. Don Wolff was the winner of the 880-yard run. In their next meet the Batavians defeated Akron 49 to 46. The Batavia cindermen dropped their final two meets to LeRoy and Albion by scores of 70 lf2 to 33 V2 and 57 V2 to 46112. Although the final tallies were not in our favor, this year's team showed many outstanding performers who will be winners on future BHS teams. Don Wolff was the winner of the annual Cape-Dowd award. The team was coached by Mr. Ricci. This year marked the beginning ofa Track Club in BHS. Rose Caccamise was elected president, along with Robert Kwit as vice-president, Sue Peck as secre- tary, and Tomas Vincello as treasurer. Their goals were to promote track and field events, offer further assistance in any track event, and to build good sportsmanship.
