Superintendent of Schools Clyde P. Wells, Ph. B., Syracuse University Since both Mr. Wells and Mr. Weber mention the building of the new school, perhaps this old cut, made before the building was erected, will be interesting. J. G. Holland, speaking of The Pl' oneer Spirit said There is no FQY31 road to anything. One thing at a time, and all things in succession. That which grows slowly endures. When I came to Batavia in Augl1St 1923, the new Batavia High School was one story above ground and was not completed for occupancy until the fol- lowlng March. Principal Weber, with an enlarged faculty staff, moved over from the antique structure built in 1873 to a new 1924 model of a six year Jun- ior-Senior High School., From the very first, I saw a new spirit develop between the faculty and students working together. This spirit g- ew slowly and steadily until now the spirit of B. H. S. is on a high and endur- ing plane. It is building daily into the lives of the great majority of students, a wholesome life oriented attitude which is of inestimable value to every boy and girl who catches the spirit of the school. May it ever be thus. Clyde P. Wells, Superintendent of Schools. 'F Reproduction of Architect's Drawing of School. Ten

Eleven When I came to Batavia in 1920 I found a high school of less than 400 students most of whom were thinking of going on to college. Indeed, there was little else for which they could plan, because practically everything in the curriculum of the school pointed only in that direction. There were no courses, of any special value, in Shop Work, Home Economics, Music, Drawing or Physical Education. Neither were there any Orchestra, Glee Clubs, Band, Assembly Programs, Club Work and many other features which we now enjoy and which we consider so necessary. During the past eighteen years our student body has more than tripled in size, bringing in to our school practically all of the young people of our city under eighteen years of age. Our problem has been to develop a type of school which would provide for the many interests, abilities and desires found in such a student group. We have at- tempted to do this by the addition of those departments and activi- ties of our school which did not exist in the old brick building. All of these new things were made pos- sible by our new school into which We moved in February 1924. The tax- payers of Batavia are still paying for this building. The least any of us can do to show our appreciation of what our community has done for us, is to make an added effort to profit fully from these fine op- portunities which have been provided for us. Howard D. Weber, Principal Principal of Junior-Senior High School Howard D. Weber, A. B.-Syracuse University M. A.-University of Michigan y
