7?vL!5' After a successful season in 1940 the Bastrop Rams began their training this past fall with a fine spirit and with g eat plans for future success Several good players had been lost by graduation but there were reserve players from the 1940 squad who showed promise of carrying on at these positions In the opening game of the season the 1940 edition of the Rams made their debut by thoroughly trouncing Hamburg 46 0 In this performance the team showed indications of reaching the heights attained by the team of the previous year when they won the North Louisiana Championship The second game on the schedule was with the Crossett Eagles a neighboring rival who had in former yea s dealt much misery to Bastrop teams In this encountertlm:Rams struck pay dirt early In less than a minute after the opening whistle captain Talmadge Foreman behind perfect interference ran sixty yards for a touch down to give Bast op an early lead Apparently stunned by this early onslaught the Eagles became helpless before the terrific charging of the Bastrop forward wall An avalanche of touchdowns brought the score to 46 0 Newellton the class B champions of 1940 proved to be a rugged and well coached aggregation Receiving the opening kick off the boys from the Delta country staged an early drive which nearly netted them a thouchdown This early thrust seemed to awaken our boys to the realization that here was a team capable and soon four touchdowns had been negotiated but now without bow ing once to the visitors Final score 27 6 Then came the game with Tallulah the team that three years before had defeated Bastrop for the Northeast Louisiana Champion ship The Rams met Tallulah on the Trojan field in a down pour of rain Both teams played well under the condit ons A stubborn Tallulah defense kept the Rams well away from pay di 1 during the first quarter The second quarter however found the Ram offense striking with the fury that had characterized.1tin earlie games and at half time the score was 12 0 A third and fou th quarter touchdown brought the total 25 O In succession Rayville Mangham and Winnsbo o were defeated by the Rams The last gane ofthe regular season was against our tradition al rival Neville High Scho 1 Neville fought a hard battle how ever in the end they had to bow to the Rams Score 43 0 For eight days the team prepared for the game with the Rusto . . .
