As they paraded around the track, the band and drill team performed their parade routines. Behind them came the club floats decorated to the theme of Olym- pians are forever. The Thespians took first place in float contest. Drill team, second, and the Class of 80 , third. Finally the most awaited group of the evening. A few past Homecoming Queens from Bassett High pre- ceeded the 1978-79 Homecoming Court escorted by their proud fathers. To the tune of Close to you, the court was introduced by Mr. Tambara: Lisa Murphy. Cathy Armijo, Pam Payne. Lisa Olvera, Cathy Tru- jillo. E ' eryone waited anxiously to find out who the queen would be, but, they had to wait a little longer. Later at the dance, cou- ples enjoyed the music of Spain. The magic hour arrived, the King and Queen were announced. Chris HoUing was crowned King. Lisa Olvera was crowned Queen. Over all the cheers, the band played, Always and Forever , as a special dedication to the Court. Congratulations Chris and Lisa. 10 Homecoming 12 Spirit Week Un fl : hLZLi r I W ' Mr Spirit Week 13 Throughout spirit week excitement ran high. Activities included dressing in costume each day of the week. Games and contests were held during nutrition and lunch. Monday students bebopped as characters out of the fifties. Tuesday ghost, gob- lins, monsters and meanies recognized Halloween. Wednesday clowns and hobos frolicked bringing smiles and laughter. The Cowboys and Indians brought the spirit of the old west Thursday. Friday Hula dancers and colorful Hawaiian shirts could be seen along with the traditional black and gold. Spirited alumni, faculty, and students gathered in the gym for the pep rally. The anxious spectators were greeted by the spirit of past, present, and future Olympians. The Class of ' 81 won the con- test of cheers which opened the coffin to reveal the Olympian spirit portrayed by Guillermo Gal- van. Vince Rubio and Kathie Woods entertained with the song Evergreen . The Olympian Band, drill team, and floats joined in parade around the neighborhood. The Olympian football team put away the fun to get down to the serious business of meeting the Covina Colts on the playing field. M Spirit Week M ' (lOyh ' L icolciL. There was no money in the bank. Someone absconded with ASB funds. Rotten Luck! Now how can we run without money? NO WAY! This question surfaced time and again and the ASB went to work with fervor to correct the situation. President Ortega recalled that the students came in September with high hopes for the year and the finan- cial trouble knocked them off balance. The priority that emerged was to keep sports alive. For Ortega it was a trying year, but a meaningful, learning experience. He stated he had become more aware and his role as president had taught him self-discipline and given him pride in the fact the ASB was get- ting on its feet again. Albert Feria spent his third year in ASB and looks forward to working in 1980, his senior year. A self-motivated man, Feria said that working with student government helped him care for the school and in turn show others how to care. He felt reward in getting things done. Vice President Feria served as the student member of the school board, a responsible position pro- viding the ASB with communication with district administration! Commissioner of Activities Memo Galvan spent his first year as an officer of ASB. According to Memo it was a challenge for him personally. He saw that it was hard for the ASB to get the attention of students and teachers and at times the group felt all alone. Others didn ' t seem to know how much work and responsibility it took to put on dances, running the snack bar at games, and sometimes feeling disappointed because students let their school down with apathy or negative behavior. Memo found that involvement with ASB can be fun, that persons can have a good time while getting jobs done and generally keeping things going, that the work can give one pride in their school. Bottom Row: M. Galvan, L. Olvera, K. Woods. A. Ortega. D. Ortega. Top Row: J. Collins, E. Kamidoi. C. Armijo. Mrs. Byers, A. Feria. Secretary Cathy Armijo saw the ASB promoting spirit at pep rallies and getting clubs working together. Cabinet member Chrisann Tamori agreed that ASB worked to get people involved and that successful student government was basic to school unity. Chief Justice David Ortega said that ASB had worked hard and that the highest point, for him, was giving the coming class a challenge to keep the ASB going on with the same energy as 1979. Mrs. Melanie Byers serves as faculty advisor for the group, leading with a sure hand. Mr. Barry Tambara as director of activities provides conscientious leadership, helping with problems, attaining goals. Congratulations to a fine group! Bottom Row: K. Kamidoi, C. Tanori. A. Feria. M. The theme TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT along with the joy of the holiday season brought fine memories to all, students, teachers, and alumni, who danced to the excellent music of POTEN- TIAL. Dancers packed the floor as each tune, disco or rock, played. It seemed every dancer had Christmas Ball Fever on a Thursday night. At twelve o ' clock Student League President S. Taylor and Vice President R. Lamp- kins cleared the floor to introduce the royal court. The hall was still and full of heightened excitement as the prin- cesses and princes were announced. Connie Velasquez, Janice Kuwara, Karen Holling and Becky Velasquez all received princess crowns. Edward Rodriguez, Richard Delgado, Vinnie Iberra, and Richard Myers were crowned princes. King Ed Claproth and Queen Elizabeth Luna from 1977 were on hand to crown Eugene RevierVernines King and Judy Ibarra Queen of 1978. The Student League and Sponsor Carol Triestman deserve kudos for a most enjoy- able evening. Activities 63 Come see THAT ' S ENTERTAINMENT IN FIVE ACTS. Read the advertisement for the first produc- tion presented by the Thespian Club. Despite some awkwardness and unforseen circumstances the five acts became two. Director Mark Wilson proclaimed the show must go on so with the two fine acts that were left the show did go on for three matinees and one evening performance. In THE PSYCHIATRIST IN SPITE OF HIMSELF, Millie (Brenda Garcia) seeks revenge on her husband Bud (Vince Nerey). She tells Frank and Evelyn (David Leroy and Alicia Munoz) that she knows of an excellent psychiatrist for their daughter Chris (Jamie Rivas) who wants to marry Rak (Danny Carrasco). Complications abound when the psychiatrist happens to be Millie ' s husband, Bud, the mechanic. In A MORE PERFECT UNION a group of girls por- tray snobs who refuse to accept a girl from across the tracks into their glee club. B. Garcia, J. Rivas, E. Rivas, K. Ullberg, J. Rivas, D. Hippie, R. Wilkinson and A. Munoz gave outstanding performances. Hats off to the technical crew. This drama season debut was a delightful tribute to Mark Wilson ' s talent and effort. L F i l m r B 1 H fc v! H K J M Activities — 65 Strong muscles and nerves were the requirements for participation on Bassett ' s donkey basketball team. Even so, many student and faculty players finished the February 16th game with shattered nerves and aching muscles. Leading the list of aches and pains were Mr. John Bush, playing for the faculty team and who decided to fall from his donkey in a different way — on his head. Call- ing for the student team was junior Mike McCall, whose donkey decided he liked Mike better on the floor than on his back. While the gym floor was taking all this pounding, however, a few players managed to stay on their donkeys long enough to score. High scorer for the faculty team was Bill Leavitt, whose 10 points were the major force in pushing the teachers to victory. Carolyn Watt was also at the top of the scoring roster with 8 points to her credit, while Rachael Rey scored 4 points. Other scorers were Tokijo iOchi, Rudy Ramirez and Paul Gudbrandsen, each racking up one basket. Mike McCall stayed on his beast long enough to score 6 points for the student team. Following him, John Collins, Tina Sandavol and Vincent Rubio all pushed in 4 points each. Chris Zepeda, Tim McMurtrey, Dale Aguilar and Memo Galvan also had a hand in scoring with 2 points each. TEAM PICTURE After all this shooting and scor- ing went on, the two teams found themselves head- to-head with tie scores. Resolving the game in a sud- den-death over- time, the students faltered after 1% minutes and Leav- itt charged under the faculty basket to drop in the last two points of the game. The final score was 28-26. with revenge already in the planning stages for the next Don- key Basketball game. o CD CTJ cr 5 o CD CD U 03 CO U cd Plh CZl CD CJ cd Ph SMILESMILESMI FROWNFROWNF SADSADSADSAD WONDERWONDE SERIOUSSERIOU HAPPYHAPPYHA SURPRISESURPR JOYJOYJOYJOYJ FEARFEARFEAR ■vV ys --i ' - ' .; -. Mr. John Roberts, the new band director, led the Marching Olympians through many parades, half times, pep rallies, and competition. A small group numbering around 43, the Olympians competed against bands with 80-100 members. With odds of major proportions the Bassett band placed consistently in all competitions. Alfonso Alcala has been drum major for two years, winning many awards. Debbie Arballo, majorette, performed with style to give the group prestige. Director Roberts said, We did very well this year considering thAt almost half the band were freshmen. We should have a good year next year as the band continues to mature and improve., A few key seniors are graduating, including our fine drum major, A. Alcala. However, the rest of the band should be able to pick up the slack and give . us an award winning marching and concert season next year. s m 170 Clubs Stage Band. Front Row; J. Romano, F. Atencio. To talk health, happiness and prosperi- ty to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there IS something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improve- ment of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. r - P H. e. Roger Leber Fred Leos Vincent O.
