AND MANY A GOAL TO R ACH. Lyal W. Burkholder When we asked Mr. Burkholder to comment on our theme, he wrote the beautiful lines above which so typify the versatility of this man. His is a life which has been devoted to the better- ment of our community and especially to the ed- ucation of our young people. His first association with our schools was in 1943 when he became principal of Basic High School, a position which he so aptly held until 1949. Between the years 1949-1956 he was superintendent of the Henderson School District. But a man with his many talents cannot be confined to one small spot and in 1956 he became the Area Administrator for the Clark County School District, a position which en- abled many people to reap his wisdom and guid- ance. Mr. Burkholder will retire from regular service in public education June 30, 1969. Following retire- ment he plans to complete work for the Doctor's Degree and devote remaining years to college or university teaching. Mr. Burkholder, we wish' you the best of luck in all your endeavors and the goals you yet will reach. Seated: Supt. James Mason, George W. Wilkinson, Dr. Clare Brown, Alick J. Mackie, Dell Robison. Woodbury, Helen Cannon Standing: Glen C. Taylor, C, Donald Clark County Education Center School Board Keeps Pace With Education The Board of School Trustees formulates policy to meet the every day challenges of the world through improved education. The board meets twice a month at the Education Center on Flamingo Road and other times as neces- sary. The school board policies have permitted innovations in our schools allowing us to keep pace with the ever-changing world of educa- tion. The passage of a new bond issue will allow the board to build much needed new schools and to bring our present schools up to the current high standards. Our goal is to make available to every student the best possible ed- ucation. John A. Dooley--Principal A MAN WITH A PURPOSE i To the Class of 1969 - Your class ranks among the top three classes in the history of Basic High School for helping us reach our goal of making Basic one of the best schools in the West. I truly hope we have more classes like the class of 1969. I believe that the outstanding need of the human being is to have worthy goals for which he can strive. The worth of his goals will be measured by his personal sense of values. Also, the worth of our nation will be measured by the collective goals of our citizens. My wish for each member of the class of 1969 is that you establish and achieve worthy goals so that when the time arrives when you will have to meas- ure your life's accomplishment, you will be able to say, My life was worth while. STUDENT BODY OFFICERS This years Student Council Members have worked hard to promote more participation in Basic High School. We have achieved many of our set goals. We start- ed with a successful homecoming. This was a bright spot in the first part of the year and we would like to thank all those who helped make it possible. We also participated in a county organized Stu- 26 dent Council. Many students are not aware of this, but David Gibson, a Senior, has served as president of the organization for the past year. It is a real hon- or for a student from Basic to serve as president of this organization. We now take this opportunity to thank Mrs. White and Mr. Cooke our most helpful and under- standing supervisors for all the help they have given us. CLASS REPRESENTATIVES Row 1: L. Burr, M. Only those speaking Spanish enjoy the Mexican gourmet. At Christmas we caroled the hospital and the teach- ers. Later, with Mr. Walker, our sponsor, we traveled to Nogales where we haggled over purchases, hair cuts and shoe shines. Martha yells, Hey, Mr. Walker, Eva's sleeping in class! SPANISH CLUB This year's Spanish Club took a trip to Ensenada. It proved worthwhile and enjoyable, even to those of us who were on'thefb'us that broke down. We had our own basketball team that went to Mexico. They weren't exactly the Olympic team, but they had just as much fun, even though we lost 6-12. In addition to this, long and lasting friendships were made be- tween the Las Vegas groups, Klink and Clamp. There were, however, the nominal amount of battle bruises and scars received when the members dived after candy that had fallen from the broken pinata. It was decided that initiation would be in the spring of the year. This allowed more room for games and races, as it was held on the football field. 3T Les Elites Officers: Judy Heckenlively, sec. and treas., loan Garvey, vice pres., Laurie Spencer, pres. To others its the same thing they've seen in other year's. To some its a book of val- ue, of importance, or 224 pages of paper. The staff of El Lobo has tried to portray the 68-69 school year as people, prob- lems, fun and change. The many hours of work spent in class and on weekends has made an abstract thought reality to these dedicated people. In charge of this year's book are Dave Harrington, editor in chief; Bill Giles, asst. ed.; Barbara Fannin, photo ed.; Jeff Burr, business manager. Besides spending hours put- ting copy together, we kept busy doing things such as sponsoring a mock president- ial election on October 18 and attending Publications Day in the spring. The Lone Wolf staff made a good start this year by getting a newspaper ready to sell on the first day of school. The enthusiasm and ambition possessed by staff members last fall remained with the Lone Wolf all year and the result was an excellent bi- . . weekly school paper. .. . 0.89. o '- . These girls spent a week at Stead Campus at the Uni- versity of Nevada. For them, this week proved to be a very enjoyable and worth while experience. We made many friendships which will last throughout our lives. We learned to be good winners, but, perhaps more im- portant we learned to accept defeat gra- ciously. The experience required of us is only a beginning of our education in the political aspects of life in these United States. The American Legion Auxilary sponsors our Girls State program but without the help of the local organization it would not have been financially possible for us to attend Girls State. Gan- menthaler and there were 34 members in the organ- ization. The Basic High School Band department is now one of the most active organizations on campus with a total of more than 100 members under the direction of Mr. Duane A. Fuller, During the'fall months, the marching band furnishes pep music and haIf-time performances for football games led by their drum-major Jeff Hafen. After football sea- son, the concert band begins the more serious, sometimes tedious rehearsals for the various future events. In the spring there is a concert and a district music festival, at which the band's performance of three musical compositions is evaluated. Of course there are always parades for the band to march in. Marching Band prepares formation. Marching Band 61 Stage Band Members are, Row 1: L. Totten, C. Hahn, A. We realized that we could not rest on past memories of glory, but must strive to keep victory and honor of success alive. The Class of 1969 feels that we have achieved our goal of success. We were ready for responsibility of leadership handed to us one year ago. We now feel confident to hand our present responsibility over to the up- coming Seniors knowing we have a much greater challenge ahead of us. We would like to wish the best of luck to the future students of Basic High School, hoping they will face their challenges with courage and con- fidence as we have tried to do in the past. We now leave it up to you, the underclassmen, to carry out the tradition of spirit and glory that is ours here at Basic High School. We extend our deepest gratitude to our Class sponsors Mr. Huffey, Mr. Empson, Mr. Frank, Mr. Shaw, Mr. Beatty and Mrs. White. Christine Adamson Fut. Teachers 1, 2, 3, 4, sec. 4; Nat. This year we're Juniors and that means upper classmen to you Sophomores and Freshmen. We have worked long and hard to reach this point in our high school career. This has been our most active year. During our Junior year we have accomplished many successful projects. Among them were the Junior carnival, the slave sale and the Junior Prom. We hope that the experience afforded to us dur- 108 ing the past three years shall mold us into better Seniors. We also hope that this experience will carry through to make our leadership as commendable as the Class of 1969. The Junior Class wishes the Class of 1969 and the under classmen good luck in the future. And also a very special thanks to our sponsors Mr. Ruth and Mr. Horan for their help and guidance. Indeed they have helped make our Junior year a successful and memorable one. SOPHOMORES WORKED, LAUGHED AND MATURED. We're the class of '71--and this has been a great year for us. As we look back on the trials we encountered with our Homecoming float and our highly success- ful Sophomore Reverse, we realize that we have just sampled a few of the many fine opportunities which have been made available to us, and we look ahead to our remaining years at Basic with great anticipa- tion. 126 We hope that next year as upperclassmen we can uphold the fine example which has been set for us and that we, in turn, will set a good example for those who follow us. Being freshmen this year we're the underclassmen. We've started and now to reach our goal. We found that going to Basic High School isn't all fun. It's hard work too. We've tried our hardest to make the class of 72 and Basic High School the best. Though our life at Basic has just started, we have a lot left to accomplish. We have three years left to make Basic what we want it to be. 142 We've watched our upperclassmen and we re- spect them for all they've done. We hope some day to fill their shoes but we know it's going to be a lot of work. We would like to thank our sponsors Mr. Purcell, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Fulton, Mr. Crakes, Mr. Smu- skiewicz and Mr. Tolman for their assistance. We would also like to wish the class of 69 good luck in the future. They really deserve it. Henderson Good memories of the past ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The 1969 El Lobo is possibly the finest production of its kind in Basic High School history. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to making our goal a reality. A few have given the book an extra boost and cannot be left without special recognition: Mr. Dooley and the faculty for their co-operation with our picture sched- uies. The Lone Wolf for agreeing with our mutual trade arrangement with pic- tures. The businessmen of Henderson and Las Vegas for their financial support. The parents of the staff for their understanding of the extra time needed in production. Sanchez studios for their quality artwork and professional photography assistance. Barbara Fannin and Patti Robinson for their many hours of extra work as staff photographers. Kerri Gierer for her smiling acceptance of typing duties. Delilah Mutoff for her work on the index. The entire staff for their time and devotion from the realization of our goal through to completion. Words cannot possibly express the gratitude we owe to Mrs. Verdena Pur- cell, who gave unselfishly of her time, her home, and her knowledge. Her dedication is reflected in the quality of this book.
