The year found the students at BHS in a stream of activities and events. Life in and out of class kept at a pace that was hard to imagine. Traditional activities such as Homecoming, Courtwarming, and Prom made their usual eloquent ap- pearance. BHS students pursued academic excellence with many notable accomplishments. P.A.S.E. (Parents Assisting Secondary Education) was formed to assist administra- tors and teachers alike pursue excellence in the classroom for BHS students. Community Education continued to grow at its usual rapid pace providing educational and recreational ser- vices to a community and school on the move. Through the pages of the 1985-86 Bobcat you will find a school and community caught in a stream of incredible progression. There's no stopping now!! A Vcar Of Z And Changing Attitudes szudswz cm Thirteen years of our life is spent gaining an education. Much happens along the way. Friendships are made that will last a life- time. Those moments that happen through those years that seem like only yesterday, become the good ole' days in the years to come. The student life at Basehor High School is an active one. Beyond the studies and homework we find traditional events such as Homecoming, Courtwarming and Prom. Sports play an important role in our lives and often school pride is based in those activities. Volleyball, football, cross coun- try, basketball, wrestling, and track teams were joined by a very successful golf team in 1986. Many students were active paptici- pants as members of the teams or as specta- tors. Outside issues touched our lives in 1986 when the hazards of drunk driving were addressed by the school and community. The student life at BHS is an active one, indeed, full of memories that will become the good ole' days ! SZUMWZ CEA DSKSHJP Keeping Zradition Going Those who lead set precedents and carry out traditions long held by our school. Some of those at the top of the leadership roles are members of Stu- dent Council. Serving as president of the student body this year was Cindy Enneking. She is seen right decorating the new Christmas tree that was pur- chased by Student Council this year. Vice President was Laurie Sedlock, Secretary was Bill Foley, and Treasur- er was Joe Scherer. In adition to the Christmas tree. Student Council purchased a beautiful oak podium and speaker system to be used at school events. The council and their sponsor, Kandy Johnson, kept very busy plan- ning and decorating for traditional dances such as Homecoming and Courtwarming. In addition to traditional events, the council served as a hospitality com- mittee for several of the school's social events such as open house and various parents' meetings. Senior Class Officers Susie flick, President Nancy £ berth, Vice President Kobert Nichols, Secretary Julie ftreuer, Zreasurer — Miss Kandy Johnson, Student Coun- cil sponsor, helped keep events going smoothly at Homecoming and other traditional events that were spon- sored by Student Council. Above: Paul Greer and Gretchen Brewer find out that the most difficult thing about traditional dances is getting the flower on right. mombcomjm Places Jh the Meart Student Council sponsored the 1985 Homecoming ceremonies and dance. The theme of the event was Places In The Heart . Nancy Eberth, Dawn Odle, and Lisa Fouts were no- minated from the Senior class as homecoming royalty for the occasion. School And Community Come Zoyether Zo Heat Zlie Odds The BHS chapter of SADD, Community Education, parens and patrons came togeth- er to celebrate the graduation of the Class of 1986. They did it not only as a celebration, but because the leading cause of death among teenagers is drunk driving and drunk driving is most likely to occur at prom and graduation time. The amount of time spent preparing for the party was amazing as parents and com- munity were drawn together out of love for their young people. Countless prizes, schol- arships, and gift certificates were given away while students were entertained by a disc jockey and a belly dancer. Students enjoyed pizzas and endless tables of food and refreshment. The list of those who gave their time, prizes, and money is endless. They have set a precedent that will forever be appreciated. 15 PMOZO AJCMM PMOZO ACMIM ACM AjCMM PMOZO MtCUM PMOZO MMM PMOZ Midden Jn Zhe Malls At MMS. .. ZACSNZ Many students who pass through the halls of Basehor High School possess tal- ents that we may or may not know. Participating in Band, Chorus, and Thes- pians are some of the ways students are allowed to demonstrate their talents. Sea- sonal concerts were often given so that par- ents and community could also be given the opportunity to appreciate the talented gifts our students possess. In 1986 the Bobcat Yearbook staff spon- sored a talent show that brought many tal- ented people out from hiding. The event was sponsored as a money making project for the production of the yearbook. Charla DeFries (shown left) has been recognized nationally for her talent on the trampoline. She was the third place winner in the yearbook talent show. Mike Greene (below) is a member of his own band and has been practicing his skills on the guitar for many years. Mike also participated in the yearbook talent show. %Am As in the past, pizza sales helped the band pur- chase new equipment and music that greatly bene- fited the group. Under the direction of Mike Wiesner, shown at the bottom, the band participated at League, Re- gional, and State Music Festivals. Band Members include (starting front): Suzanne Frost, Cindy Enneking, Sharon Kornhaus, Debra Heinen, Vickie Webb, Kendra Williams, Michelle Davis, Shannon Henderson, Karen Magaha, Nancy Lewallen, Mary Rich, Aimee Jackson, Christy Raines, Amy Bock, Kyle Hurla, Mike Fulkerson, Rick Gramling, Jim Carter, Kalii King, Christine Flanagan, Nancy Witten, Angie Lacy, Kurt Bohn- dorf, Steve Ritter, John Price, John Kenny, Jim Theno, Jon Adcock, David Dumler, Mike Ducey. This year we had a young group which has the potential to do some great things in the future, commented Chorus director Brad Haynes. Along with concerts and performances for civic groups, the chorus competed at League, Regional and State Music Festivals. The group completed their season with a trip to a performance at Tiffa- ny's Attic. Chorus members include (starting front): Tammy Greer, Vickie Webb, Shay Dugan, Melinda Eu- banks, Vickie Allen, Kim Poppe, Nancy Witten, Kendra Williams, Karen Magaha, Patty Bergstrom, Christy Raines, Julie Gray, Wayne Basso, Jon Wil- liams, Denny Robbins, Susan Smith, Nancy Lewal- len. Thespians Charlie Urown Js A Hit With Audience The Thespian club at Basehor High School presented You're A Good Man Charlie Brown for their yearly performance. We spent almost two months in re- hearsal, commented senior cast member Cindy Enneking. The show required a small cast and was a good choice for the first musical ever at BHS . The dinner theater was well attended by students and com- munity. FHA assisted in the evening events by preparing a delicious lasagne dinner to serve to the guests. Many turned out to display their talents. 'I think the size of the prizes helped bring people out,” commented junior Bill Foley. Bill was a member of the winning act entitled It By Them . Taking home the $75 first prize with Bill were juniors Mark White, Rick Gramling, Chris Bock and Jim Carter. In second place was Melinda Eu- banks. Melinda sang The Rose” and was well received by the audi- ence. Charla DeFries performed her well refined trampoline routine and left the audience in awe of some of her feats. Charla received third place. All the acts were worthy of note and the yearbook staff intends to sponsor a repeat performance in 1987. We were a better team than our records shows, commented Coach Art Wells, several times we had opportunities to win but they just slipped out of reach. Many of the games were exciting, with the results only being determined in the last few seconds or minutes. The Cats sport- ed 11 wins and 4 losses in dual meets during the 1985-86 season. This re- cord gave the team a 3rd place posi- tion in league competition. The highlight of the season was a 1st place trophy won at the Tonganoxie tournament. In other tournament ac- tion the Cats took 5th at Louisburg, 8th in Regional competition, and with four qualifiers, 29th in the state. ABOVE: Captain and Most Valu- able Team Member Bryce Reiman pins an opponent in the heavy weight division. TOP: Freshman Jimmy May was a valuable asset to the Bobcat team. Senior James Newton (shown top) and senior Lloyd Young (shown above) were veteran wrestlers on the Bobcat team Chris Amerson, (shown left) continued to win as a sophomore. ZKA6K Zeams Snjoy Success Both the girls' and boys' track teams enjoyed indi- vidual successes through the season. The boys' team was a very young team with few upperclassmen par- ticipating. The boys didn't enjoy team success, but did have some individuals who were successful in their individual events. The freshmen and sophomore team members show a lot of promise for the future. The girls' track season concluded with the most ever letter winners in recent history. Two freshmen. Kalii King and Karen Magaha, re- ceived varsity letters in their first year on the team. They were joined by Lori Williams, Winda Hicklin, Tracy Trowbridge and Amy Rich. Amy Rich enjoyed continued success and now holds the school record in four events. Those events include the 400 Meter Run, 800 Meter Run, 1600 Meter Run, and the 3200 Meter Run. Having completed her junior year, she has qualified to compete at the state competi- tion for three years in a row. School record holder Amy Rich. Senior trackster Eddie Blasche. Josh was one of the few upperclassmen who participated in track. His leadership was important to the team. Above is sophomore Angela Michalls. The team practiced three days a week on area golf courses and was coached by Chris Anderson. At the Atchison invitational, our two- man team of David Sedlock and Ted Ander- son won first place medals. Our four-man team of Laurie Sedlock, Randy Coble, Phil- ip Hobbs, and Todd Johnson took 5th of 7. At the Kaw Valley Meet, Basehor took 3rd of six teams. The team's final major compe- tition took place at Bellevue Country Club in Atchison when the team placed 5th of nine schools. Leading the varsity squad was Laurie Sedlock, Ted Anderson, Randy Coble, Phil- ip Hobbs, Todd Johnson, and David Sed- lock. On the junior varsity squad were Donnie Clark, Tim Kelley, Jimmy Carter, Paul Greer, John Price, and Annette John- son.
