Cat. Robert (his friends call him Bob) is your guide and your personal private de- tective into the lives of those at BHS and the Basehor Community. Follow as he helps you to Take a Closer Look ... 4 1983-84 found the Basehor Com- munity drawn together to con- struct a sidewalk to improve the safety of school children. We found a community ready to pull together to stage one of the lar- gest homecoming parades in re- cent history. We saw the advent of the Farmboys”. and we said goodbye to the Class of 1984 with great sadness. BHS and the Basehor Community were the proud followers of many successful sports teams including the women's basketball team that went beyond all expectations and all dreams to become the Class 4A Third Place Basketball Team in the state. WHOOSH became a household word as the hard work of coaches and players and the feverish support of a school and community lead the team to state playoffs, to a trophy, and to the medals that were honorably draped about the necks of players and coaches. 7 Cheerleaders School And Community 1 For Spirit And Sportsmanship WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH Cheerleader Kathy Magaha yelled for long hours dur- ing the school year along with the hard work of the entire cheerleading team. The cheerleaders, school, community, coaches and girls basketball team not only won 3rd Place in the state, but also were award- ed a trophy as the 1 group for spirit and sportman- ship. STOP AND THINK. HOW MUCH WILL YOU REMEMBER? 10 How much will you remember from your high school days ten, twenty, or perhaps thirty years from now? Will you remember the good times you spent with friends or perhaps the long and Oh!, so bumpy pep bus rides. Will you think of the time Jackie Conn was selected as a finalist for the Kansas Homecoming Queen contest. That was an honor for Jackie and our school. Will you remember that BHS was the place where the mobile teacher” was invented when we put wheels on Business instructor Kandy Johnson? Maybe you will just remember how happy you were when someone told you that you were going to graduate. n There seemed to be a short time be- tween hello and goodbye to our friends Pauline Ongenae and Himay Vigaray. Pauline was a foreign exchange stu- dent from Holland and Himay from Spain. They were active participants and our school and will be long remem- bered and missed. 1984 WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR FOR . . . The girls attended a Pom Pon camp held at Emporia State University. They performed Glo- ria for their home routine and received a red ribbon. Each girl learned two routines and they were later taught to the rest of the squad. These routines were performed at all home football and basketball games at at some pep rallies. The squad also performed a routine for the people at Hickory Villa Retirement Home. Each year a Christmas party is held for the squad. This year, all the girls went to Hibachi and had a big dinner. Presents were also exchanged among the girls. The Pom Pon squads last performance was to Thriller. It was a routine everyone liked and enjoyed. Following the performance, a red rose was given to Captain Jackie Conn, and Co Cap- tain Cindy Maxwell, along with Kim Bartko. Lisa Brandt. Nancy Miles and Michelle Johnson. CHEERLEADNG Woosh? A sound that brought together the cheerleaders and the crowd. With the help of Mr. George King, English instructor and all around spirit fanatic, the 1983-84 cheerleaders followed the Bobcats through this winning year promoting spirit. Both varsity and junior varsity squads went to UCA (Universal Cheerleading Association) camp at Kansas State University. They learned new pep rallies and cheers which they used during the year. During the Lady Cats state com- petition the cheerleaders and school supporters received the sportsmanship award for the 4A Girls State Tournament. Pictured above are the varsity cheerleading squad. DECA Has Busy Year Distributive Education Clubs of America was an active organization this year partly due to their new sponsor Mrs. Kay Lohman-Smith. They had many money making pro- jects this year. One was selling Bob- cat pennants to all Bobcat fans. They sold signs for Valentine's Day and they had a raffle for a stuffed Easter Bunny. In the fall they sponsored a hayride for the whole school. They attended Business Career Day at Emporia State University. They also had many speakers come and talk to the members. In the spring they sponsored a Pre- Spring Jamboree week for the stu- dent body. Monday was Silence is Golden Day, and Tuesday was Whisper in my Ear Day. Wednesday they had a legs contest, and Thurs- day was Hawaii Day. Friday was Gold and Blue Day which is their club colors. The group was lead by Senior offi- cers: Denise DeTar, President, Butch Adams, Vice president, Gayla Thorne, Secretary, and Edna Jus- tice, Treasurer. The Junior officers were Susie Brock, President, Mi- chelle Birchfield, Vice President Becca Bell. Secretary, and Sandy Hardwick, Treasurer. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA The Future Homemakers of America, more commonly known as FHA, had a very exciting year. Perhaps their big- gest and most important accomplish- ment was the organizing of a volleyball tournament for Cystic Fibrosis. The whole school and community had lots of fun as they competed against each other. The Booster Club’s team won. and each team member received a Cystic Fibrosis t-shirt. Close to $200 was raised and donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. FHA also went together with the Thes- pians and had their second dessert theater. FHA also provided dessert for the Spring Open House. During February. FHA week was held and students dressed up on the fol- lowing days: Sock Day. Red White Day. Farm Boy Day, Hat Day. and Mix-n-Match Day. On the Wednesday of that week. FHA showed a film on Cystic Fibrosis during Activity period to let other students understand more about Cystic Fibrosis. One night after school, during FHA week, the mem- bers had a pizza party and Ms. Funk came and talked to the members about wife abuse. At the end of the year FHA held their Above is Mrs. Myer. sponsor showing her FHA spirit on Sock Day. They have visited Kansas University when Spanish and French programs were being sponsored. In the remainder of the school year, they went to Johnson County and saw Spanish dancers. They also saw a French play later on in the year. STUDENT COUNCIL Holds Many Memories In keeping Basehor High School’s organizations on top of things, Student Council played a good role in donat- ing them money throughout the year. If any one organi- zation needed help in a money making situation Student Council would be there to help out. This years money making project for Student Council was the profits made from the pop machine. Some of these profits went in helping to promote spirit for the 1983-84 Girls Basketball Team. The Student Council bought the girls T-shirts representing themselves before leaving for state in Salina. This years Student Council was led by President, Mi- chelle Johnson, Vice President, Brian Lindelof, Secre- tary, Stacy Johnson and Mr. George King as their Spon- sor. First they toured the Spen- cer Museum of Art with Velma Peters, profession- al photographer. Professor Gary Mason was the guide on a tour through the darkroom at the Uni- versity of Kansas. Many of the members took their cameras to photograph the campus. Next they toured Centron Film Corporation. Centron is a company that makes promotional films for big companies. John English, guide, pointed out the steps in making a promotional film. There was talk this year of buying a display case to display photo projects done by Photo Club members. They were unable to purchase one be- cause of the lack of funds. Plans are now under- way to build a case thanks to plans done by Bill Foley. 39 The 1983-84 Photo Club was led by Marilyn Anderson, sponsor, Mandy Crum, President, Larry Harms, Vice President, Suzanne Springs, Secretary, and Nancy Miles and Cindy Enneking served as Treasurers first and second semesters respectively. SCIENCE CLUB Increases Membership The Science Club has the most oed down the Illinois River the last members it’s ever had this year. day of the trip. Each member had to have a certain amount of work credits to be eligible to go on any of the trips. Members could earn work credits by working at concession stands, going to work days and meetings. Several of the members went on a trip in the mid- dle of the school year to the Cos- mosphere in Hutchinson. They also went on a four day trip to Oklahoma during Spring Break. The band also participated in the Kaw Valley League Instrumental Music Festival, the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s Regional Music Festival and the Worlds of Fun Music Festival. Many of the band members put in extra time for many different pro- jects including selling wholesale pizza kits to raise money for a variety of things including the Worlds of Fun trip. This years Flag Corps is a new addition to the band. Several students tried out for the position at the end of the 1983 year. Eight positions were filled. Throughout the summer their were dif- ferent practice sessions that took place to prepare for the new 1984 year. B-CLUB HAS EXCITING YEAR Any boy who letters in a sport can join B-Club. The number of members has stayed about the same throughout the years. This past year the club has been busy trying to earn money for two new Olympic weight sets to be placed in the boys locker room. They have sold magazines to the public and they also sponsored a lift-a-thon. The weights will be bought next year and will be in the locker room, ready to be used by both girls and boys. This year the B-Club was led by President Danny Wiley, Vice President Keith Everhart, Trea- surer Eric Otting, and Sponsor Mr. Dick Erickson. 42 Pictured above are the B-Club members. Back Row: J.V. The members of the staff were the same throughout the year, but they switched newspaper posi- tions at the end of the first semester. This gave every- one the chance to work on different areas of the news- paper. In the Kansas Scholastic Press Association Contest Mike Brock received first place in Advertising, Denis DeTar placed second in Front page layout, Nancy Dumler took second place in Feature Writing, Scot Stol- fus received second place in Theme Development and Mark Williams (introduction to journalism student) took second in Sports Writing. These members then moved on to the State Contest. Denise DeTar took a second place in Front Page layout while Scot Stolfus took first in Theme development. Both of them received medals. The News Production class did all the typing for the Breeze this year and made all the programs for the games, concerts, and any other activity that required a program. Peggy Porter and Julie Fisher served as Editors for the yeabook, with Mrs. Sue Ryan as the sponsor. Donna Kuehnhoff and Jackie Conn also helped in the actual production of the annual. In helping to pay for the yearbook, the staff sold M M's and Light Bulbs. Advertisements helped out tre- mendously, as local and various other patrons sup- ported the yearbook. These money making projects helped to lower the cost of yearbook production, keeping the price per copy to the student body as low as possible. In addition to the above mentioned people the following people also contributed to mon- ey making and copywriting: Misti Wilkey, Tammy Gumm, Gina Sanchez, Cindy Baker, Michelle John- son, Tracey Tripp, Nancy Dumler, Susie Nick, Brian Lindelof, Doug Payne, Mark Williams. Two staff members placed at the Kansas Scholastic Press Association Regional Contest. Staff artist Scot Stolfus, took second in regional competition in Theme Development and Graphics and then went on to place first in the state in the same contest. Donna Kuehnhoff placed first in regional competition in Yearbook Cutline Writing. ART CLUB A NEW ORGANIZATION The 1983-84 Art Club is a very creative organization. Throughout the year they prepared different activi- ties that would be shown to the public. For example, they painted mural on the front of a building in down town Basehor. Since Art Club is a new club, this year was more or less a planning year for next year. Back row: Ann Palmgren. Lesley Goens. Jett Williams. David Russell. Bob Ritter. Brenda Jacobs. The team was a “rookie squad , with only 5 returning lettermen, but the rookies” came through and filled the spots that needed to be filled. There were not many games won, but a lot of experience was gained. The final record was 1-8. With the win coming against Immaculata at Homecoming, the score was 14-6. There were many bright spots during the season. Terrance Bey led all rushing for the Bobcats with 131-409 with a 3.1 average, Dan Wiley with 89- 248 and that is a 2.7 average. As for receiving, Mark Williams was at the head of the passing attack. Mark threw 80 passes with 36 of them being caucht with a total of 478 yards. Brian Lindelof led all receiving with 16 catches for 267 yards and Robert Nichols with 9 for 136 yards. As for defense, Eric Otting and Tim Roberts led in tackles with 97 and 78 respectfully. The team had tri-captains, Brian Lindelof, Dan Wiley, and Mark Williams, but the senior players showed good leadership and the team’s attitude was one of ‘let’s go out and work hard, but let’s have fun too.' The traditional Homecoming activi- ties were held on September 16 while the Bobcats outscored the Im- maculata Raiders 14 to 7. The traditional festivities started early Friday evening with the annual parade. This year the parade was sponsored by the Basehor-Linwood Community Education and was one of the largest parades in BHS histo- ry- During the half-time ceremonies Jackie Conn was crowned queen while Tracey Tripp and Kim Zaloz were crowned princesses. The Homecoming dance was held the following Saturday evening with special dances set aside for the queen and her court. Shown right are Jackie and her father. Rodney Conn. Traditionally, the queen and her court are all escorted by their fathers. THE FINAL SCORE OF THE WINNING Jacqueline Eileen Conn 50 TWENTY-SEVEN MATCHES Girls Gain Experience Tremendous efforts were made by the 1983 volleyball team. Under the leadership of coach Mrs. Mary McGinnis, assistant coach Miss Brenda DeGroot and Senior Captain Julie Fisher, the team pulled through with a 10-17 record. One of the team's biggest ac- complishment for the season was receiving 3rd place in the Bobcat Tourney. This season, being the 1st losing season in a number of years, was caused by many fac- tors. The 1983 team was a very young team. The majority of the Varsity team was juniors and sophomores. The players were also in- troduced to the 6-2 offense this season, one of the hardest offenses in volleyball. Coach Mrs. McGinnis comments on the team's hard work, “They handled it very well and learned a lot to build on the next couple of years and develop a championship team.” JUNIOR VARSITY: Dawn Odle, Susie Nick. Lloyd Young, and Robbie Kitchen. The year 1983 had to be a year of rebuilding for first year head coach Mark Mishler. With only two return- ing lettermen, Brad Hoffman, and Cindy Enneking, the team did not look too competitive. This seemed to be quite true after looking at the first few meets' results. Coach Mishler thought at the beginning of the season that it would have to be an individual effort if any medals were to be won, because of all the inexperience the team had. The cross country squad consisted of two seniors, Captains Brad Hoff- man and Doug Payne; one junior, Chamlie Schubert; two sopho- mores, Cindy Enneking and Lloyd Young, and four freshman. The team did have one highlight from the season, this being when they captured second place as a team at Savior of the World Invi- tional on October 13, 1983. Other highlights were when Doug Payne, Chamlie Schubert, and Cindy En- neking all placed at the league meet to receive medals. Still another highlight was when Payne and Enneking made honor- able mention. Area coaches voted on athletes to Wyandotte County All-Star Teams. Payne made the All-Wyandotte County Boys’ team (honorable mention), and Enneking made the All-Wyandotte County Girl’s team (honorable mention). Coach Mishler considered the sea- son to be successful and knows that he will still have more rebuilding next year. 1983 Cross-Country Team Results Wamego Invitational ............................................... 20th Leavenworth Invitiational .......................................... 5th Savior Invitational ................................................ 7th Lansing Invitational ........................„...................... 6th Savior Invitational ................................................ 2nd League ........................................................... 5th Regionals ......................................................... 11th WRESTLING The 1983-84 wrestlers had a tough year but put forth much effort. The highlights of the season were beating league powers Tonganoxie at home, and Immaculata twice. Leading scorers were Mark Williams with 223 pts. and Terrance Bey with 218 pts. Brian Lindelof and Ter- rance Bey led in rebounds with 143 and 101 respectively. WHAT CAN YOU SAY BUT 'WHOOSH!’ Third Place State Champions, that is the title of the 1983-84 Girls Basketball Team this year. With the leadership of Coach Richard Haynes, the girls finished the season with a record of 19-5. No one will ever forget this 83-84 season because this is the first year a girls basketball team has ever gone to state. With the Third Place Trophy, Basehor also won the Sportsmanship Trophy, due to signs saying “WHOOSH’' held by many Base- hor fans. To receive the First Place Award at the Sub-State Tourna- ment Basehor successfully beat Effingham 60-38. Then they traveled to Salina, where the State Tournament was held. With practically the whole town of Basehor going “WHOOSH” behind the girls, they overpowered Baxter Springs 53-41. In the semi-finals of State, the Cats met Concordia, who was ranked number one, the cats fell back and lost 39-54. But Spirits were still high, and the girls went on to win the Third Place Trophy by beating a tough team from Council Grove, 39-36. Congratulations go to the whole team and their coaches for receiving third place, but the whole town of Basehor consid- ers them 1! 1983-84 SCOREBOARD WE Pleasant Ridge ............................... 39 45 McClouth ..................................... 33 58 Tonganoxie ................................... 32 39 Piper ........................................ 27 38 Perry-Lecompton .............................. 44 48 Lansing ..................................... 31 47 Immaculata ................................... 47 41 Eudora ....................................... 33 59 DeSolo ....................................... 38 34 Tonganoxie ................................... 43 47 Eudora ........................................22 53 Jefferson Co. The 1984 track season for the men can be best described as a building year. With only two seniors and one junior, the team was comprised mostly of sophomores and fresh- men. Four lettermen returned: Doug Payne. Terrance Bey. Josh Crum, and Donnie Clark. Doug Payne placed high in every meet in the 800 Meter Dash. He was league champion and just missed going to state. Junior Ter- rance Bey was undefeated by 4A or lower competitors throughout the season in the 400 Meter Dash. He was State Champion in the 400 Meter Dash with a school record of 50.3. He also placed 6th in the state in the 200 Meter Dash. Sophomores Josh Crum and Allen Wiley lettered also this year. The girls track team was described as “small and very coachable“, by Coach Brenda De- Groot. The team sported many personal suc- cesses. Shelly Burns now holds the school record in the Disk throw with a toss of IIS’S . Freshman Amy Rich broke two school records in the 400 Meter Dash and the 800 Meter Run. Cindy Enneking finished the year with the school record in the Mile Run. Next year’s team should be a strong one as the girl's team will lose only one member to the :‘84 graduation. 64 ABOVE: Men's Track Team. Back Row: Coach Mark Mishler. Doug Payne. Josh Crum. Mrs. Marlene Dillard, presented their version of the hit television series M A S H. It all started when Hawkeye and Duke came to the 4077th as new surgeons. They were the best around, but not everyone liked their joking around. Despite the war going on around them, there was little wars going on in the camp.
