TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1981 When you think of high school, you think of a group of students. But each student is an individual, a fragment of BHS. As you progress from a freshman to a senior you also grow individually forming opinions and goals all your own. Seniors, as pacesetters of a high school, help to shae the undergraduates attitudes and objectives. It is to this unique faction of BHS that we dedicate this 1980-81 yearbook. — Mary Pouppirt Editor Seniors Senior Class Officers Mark Coble, President Richard Cronn, Vice President Pam Blankenship, Treasurer Lisa Goens Melinda Cochran, Secretary -n Senior Credits ALAN ADCOCK Band 1,2,3,4 jqe ANGELL Track 2,3,4 Vo-Tech 4 CCVEP 3 ELIZABETH A. Cornelia re- ceives an award for acting, gets sick with the measles, catches bedbugs, and meets a handsome boy, Leo. Emi- ly, catches a stowaway, tries to help Cornelia smuggle her case of the measles past the Health Inspector, tries to survive the trip with the terrible fear they would sink, and also meets her first love, Dick. Courtwarming QUEEN BRENDA AND KING STEVE PRINCESS JULI PRINCE LARRY PRINCESS LEIGH ANN PRINCE RICHARD In 1980 the Girl's Athletic Association brought a new flare to Courtwarming by bringing it to us at Christmas time. The evening was highlighted with an appearance by Santa Claus, (Mr. Charles Peterson in disguise.) Brenda Kitchen was crowned Queen and Steve Tripp King during the Saturday evening formal. Leigh Ann Eberth escorted by Rich Cronn and Juli Williams es- corted by Larry Renn were attending royalty. Included in the Queen's court were attendants from each class. Representing the Juniors were Annette Gehlken and Jay Allbee, Sophomores Jennifer Trout and Leonard Nick, and Freshmen Tracey Tripp and Danny Wiley. Music for the evening was provided by Chaser. Volleyball VARSITY SQUAD: Rlnda Cooper, Gloria Miller, Ellen Kornhaus, Sherry Brooks, Rene Stolfus, Brenda Kitchen, Susan May- berry, Stephanie Abell, Ellen Kelly. BELOW: Coach Mary McGinnis. “A Comeback Year” This year's volleyball teams were led by Head Coach Mary McGinnis and Assistant Coach Renea Hammett. The varsity girls ended their season with a very success- ful team. An early season record of 3-8 looked rather doubtful yet the team made a comeback the second half of the season ending with an 11-11 record, fifth in the league. For the first time, Basehor hosted a volleyball tourna- ment and in the final night beat Tonganoxie for the first place trophy. The team shoed well at the Sub-State tourney. They carried home a runner-up trophy miss- ing the title in the deciding game by only five points. Gloria Miller and Sherry Brooks received state honors for their performance during the season. The girls managed to utilize new skills and finished the season as one of the strongest powerhouse teams in the area , commented Coach McGinnis. Such was the year of the BHS Drill Team. With Juli Williams as captain along with Britta Stolfus, Brenda Kitchen, Gloria Miller, Leigh Ann Eberth, Carla Moses, Kim Hoffman, Pam Blankenship, and Stephanie Abell the Drill Team had a very successful year. The team's year began in june with practices for summer camp held at Baker University. The girl's braved 115° temperatures to learn rou- tines that they would later preform for their school and com- munity. Next year will be a rebuilding year, commented sponsor Renea Hammett. No doubt next year's team will be just as talented as the 1980-81 Drill Team. The team wore their Green and White well. Cheerleaders The BHS Cheerleaders were lead by co-captains Jeannine Porth and Julie Trout. Sponsor Don Haussler had quite a spirit- ed group to handle. The Cheerleaders also attended camp at Baker University and also suffered through the summer heat of 1980. The memories they brought back of achievement and pride made the hard work well worth it. The 1980-81 Varsity Squad consisted of julie Trout, Jeannine Porth, Tami Kelley, Ellen Kelly, Jennifer Trout, Susan Eberth, and Jackie Kelly. The Junior Varsity Squad was lead by captains Rita Novak and Pam Theno along with Toby Allbee, Gina Sanchez, Misti Wilkey, and Lisa Brandt. The memories of money making projects, parties, and exciting Bobcat challenges on the field, court and mat will long remain with the BHS Cheerleaders. GIRLS BASKETBALL BACK ROW: Managers Nancy Haney and Julie Fisher, Gloria Miller, Gwen Coble, Sherry Brooks, Michelle Johnson, Carla Moses, Coach Richard Haynes. FRONT: Lorna Eberth, Rinda Cooper, Debbie Shaumeyer, Paula Baker, Tracey Tripp, Susan Mayberry, Stephanie Abell. Lady Bobcats Have Exciting Season ... The Lady Bobcats had the most exciting season ever posting a 17-5 record. The girls advanced to the second round of Sub-State, an achievement no other girls basketball team had done. They took second in the Jayhawk League behind the Santa Fe Lady Chargers. The team also took first place in the Eudora Tournament going into overtime ball with the Eudora Cardinals. Coached for the second year by Richard Haynes, the girls worked hard all season to achieve their goals. They practiced while they were sick and played when they didn't feel like it. Seniors Sherry Brooks and Gloria Miller lead the team. Sherry Brooks received many honors through out the year. She was chosen for the All-State team, All-Kansan team, All-Jayhawk team, and played on a Junior Olympics team after completing the season. Junior Susan Mayberry was also chosen for the All- Jayhawk team and promises to have another outstanding season next year along with Juniors Lorna Eberth and Carla Moses, and Sophomore Gwen Coble. The Lady Cats hope to have a promising team next year with only two seniors leaving the team. 34 Award winning player Sherry Brooks Lorna Eberth breaks through a spirit banner in the game against aims for a free throw. Cross Country r Coach Richard Johnson, Leonard Nick, Brian Enneking, Kelly Myers, Jeff Elkins, |ohn Novak, Robert Brock, and Marty Morford The 1980 Cross Country team showed well in the second year of revitalization for the sport. Eight people were out, six being sophomores, one junior, and one freshman. We had a real good season for such a young and such a small team, commented Coach Richard Johnson. Brian Enneking, John Novak, and Robert Brock were the top three runners for the season. Brian finished the season with one 1st place finish (Leavenworth Invitational), two 2nd place finishes (Garner Invitational, Savior of the World Invitational), one 3rd place finish at the Jayhawk League meet, two 4th place finishes, (Savior Invita- tional, Regionals), and one 5th mark at the Lansing Invitational meet. Brian also went to state where he placed 30th. John Novak, really improved alot, in the eyes of his coach. John finished the season chalking up one 2nd place finish at the Leavenworth Invitational two 3rd place finishes (Gardner Invitational, Savior Invitational), two 4th place finishes (Lansing Invitational, Jayhawk League), two 5th place marks (Savior of the World, Jayhawk League), and a 16th place finish at state. Robert Brock, for his first year out, had a really great year, commented Coach Johnson. Robert made his mark by finishing 5th at Savior, 8th at the Lansing Invitational and Jayhawk League, 10th at the second Savior meet, and 13th at the Leavenworth Invitational. Basehor had, for their first year, a full team standing at several meets. This standing let them place second at one of the two Savior of the World Invitationals, 3rd at the Leavenworth Invitational, 4th at the Jayhawk League Meet, and 6th at the second Savior Invitational. The guys all worked hard, and did real good. The fact that they worked so hard was the cause of their success, remarked Coach Johnson. The future looks bright. WRESTLING BACK ROW: Scott Inlow, Tony Cumm, Steve Wilderson, Doug Wiley, Butch Reavis, and Gary Jons. FRONT ROW: J. N. Cooper, Don McNeil, Butch Adams, Bobby Wiley, and Tim Williams. ABOVE: Coach Steve Ludwig. BELOW: Steve Wilderson is declared champion at the regional meet. Wilderson Leads Team ... The Bobcat wrestling season began with a young, inexpe- rienced team. The team was lead by captains Doug Wiley and Steve Wilderson. Sporting an overall team record of 5 wins and 15 loses, the team none-the-less showed well individually. At the re- gional meet the following team members placed in their respective weight class: 1st place, Steve Wilderson and Tim Williams; 2nd place, Gary Jons, Butch Reavis, and Butch Adams; 3rd place, Jay Allbee and Tony Gumm; 4th place, Doug Wiley, Don McNeil, J. N. Cooper, Bobby Wiley; and Scott Inlow. Three members of the team placed at Sub-State. They were: Steve Wilderson, 1st, Tim Williams, 2nd, and Butch Adams, 3rd. Steve Wilderson went on and placed 4th in the state at that tournament. He was voted a member of the All-Kansan wrestling team. MEN’S TRACK BACK (l-r): Coach Richard Johnson, Lee Cunningham, Robbie Price, Jeff Williams, Keith Miller, Tim Kibler, Roger Ferrell, Coach Mark Mishler. MIDDLE: Robert Brock, Mark Coble, Doug Wiley, Darren Neas, Brian Enneking, Dan Wiley, Brian Lindelof. FRONT: Lee Milbourn, John Novak, Kevin Billings, Kevin Inman, Marty Morford, Drake Jennings, NOT PICTURED: Jeff Kuehnhoff. It was one of the best seasons that Basehor High School has ever had, commented Coach Richard Johnson on the 1981 track season. The best season was led by Kevin Inman. We had Inman, who is one of the better track athletes in the state, remarked Johnson. Inman took sec- ond in the 100 meter dash (10.95) and third in the 110 meter high hurdles (:15.12) at the 1981 state track meet. Inman is also currently the co-holder of the state 110 meter high hurdle record. He was more or less the guy who could get us some solid points, added Coach Johnson. Kevin Billings also was a leader on the Bobcat squad, improving his shot put throw by five feet, during the season. He placed second at state, 49' 4 Vi . The sophomore distance runners (Robert Brock, Brian Enneking, Marty Morford, John Novak) were also assets to the team. We had some outstanding sophomores that came up this year and really start- ed maturing, said Johnson. In fact, those four sophomores we had running distance races set about six or seven records during the year. Through these major contributors and the other very important team members, the Cat team placed second at the Wichita State Shocker Relays, and first at the Perry-Lecompton Invitational. They also placed in the top five or six teams in almost every other meet. Inman streaks to the finish. WOMEN’S TRACK Mrs. Renea Hammett guided the Women's track team to their first productive season in years. Though few points were scored at meets, the team was built from scratch, and will provide a solid base for future years. Kim Hoffman placed in the top six at the regional track meet at Sabetha in her event, being the first girl to do this in years. 39 BACK (l-r): Becky Distefano, Rinda Cooper, Dana Schriver, Ellen Kornhaus. MIDDLE: Lorna Eberth, Susan Mayberry, Gloria Miller, Kim Hoffman, Della Bray, Jamie Callahan. FRONT: Kim Bartko, Pam Theno, Rita Novak, Denise Moore, Coach Renea Hammett. Men’s Basketball Season Was Success With a season record of 8-12, Coach Richard Johnson felt the boy's basket- ball season was a success. We had a fairly inexperienced team coming back, and we had a center only 6' 1 that had never played center before, com- mented Johnson. Despite its consistent lack of height over the past few years, the Basehor High basketball program is slowly gain- ing back respect around the league. One member of the 1980-81 squad said he couldn't help taking interest in a conversation overheard from a few of Basehor's most loyal fans, who called the team the never quit Bobcats. Mike Fields led the season scoring, with 311 points. Steve Tripp was next with 162, and Kendal Peterson and Jim Kin- caid came in third and fourth, with 133 and 122, respectively. Ten players lettered in the 1980-81 sea- son. Four will be returning to again compete in the 1982 season. I thought we had a really good season, and the kids put out a good effort. I thought we played an exciting game of basketball, remarked Coach Johnson. ■ OPPONENT BASEHOR 59 .... Tonganoxie 52 56 .... Lansing 55 59 Eudora 50 56 . . Piper 86 61 . . I'll enter this world of great pain and great strife. I'll learn to be mean and to take what I can, I'll have to grow up, turn into a man. I'll be out on my own, trying to make it, No more fun and games, no more trying to fake it. I used to dream of this time when I was younger, But now it's here, I can dream no longer. I used to wish I was out of school, Now I realize I was a big, big Fool. This month I'll graduate, This month I'll hate, Because it's the biggest step I'll ever take. I know if I stay straight and don't give any slack, My steps will be forward, instead of back. My younger friends, listen to what I have to say, Don't dare dream about this day. Pray that it will be far away. Don't make the same mistake that I made, Work very hard for that higher grade. Don't get me wrong, it's all right to have fun and play, But if you don't work, some day you'll pay. I may not be the best one for giving advice. But I do know one thing. I'm already beginning . . . TO PAY THE PRICE. Scott Neas 62 GRADUATE Basehor High School held its Com- mencement Exercises on Thursday, May 21, 1981.
