Dr. Stansberry had the following comments: 1) work towards a one district concept; 2) improve facilities — “We are waiting for an external evaluation and once it is received we will analyze the study: and we plan to hold public meetings to gather opinions.”: 3) curriculum — “We hope to complete a curriculum program for the district next year.”; 4) maintenance of facilities and improving the lighting, drop ceilings, painting and improve the parking area. “We need to improve the quality of the building. The ceiling in the foyer and art room have already been lowered. The hallways need fluorescent lights installed to make them brighter. Then classrooms. Business and Government first, need new fur- niture. The parking areas need to be drastically improved. They are both inadequate and of poor quality. The buildings are very crowded and the population growth does not stop suddenly. Books and equipment need to be on a rotation plan — old out, new in. The counselor also needs more room. The office he has now is very much inadequate.” 6 Lois Lee once again did an excellent job The ladies who work in the Central Office arc Pat Young. District Clerk. Charlene Porter, keeping the students and staff in line. She Superintendent’s Secretary, and Glenna Florence. Secretary, is the secretary for the high school. 7 Board of Education: David Clamm. Charlie Peterson. John Johnson. Art Otterman. Joe Nick. Carol McKinney, and Janet Van Cleave. After Bud's accident Clyde Davis was hired as the school janitor. Bud Sopher was the janitor during the first semester. The ladies who helped prepare and serve the meals this year were: Pam May. Millie McKenzie. Judy Inman. Marie Rhudy. Athie (Sue) Neas. Maxine Eberth. and Pat Young. 8 FACULTY . . . that gray color . . . which nature loves; color of unpainted wood, weather-stain; time-stain; not glaring nor gaudy; the color of all roofs, the color of all things that endure . . . David Thoreau Richard Johnson (above) has taught Physical Educa- tion. World History, and World Geography at Bas- ehor for 11 years. He is Head Coach for Basketball, Track, and Cross-Country. Mr. Johnson is also Key- Club Sponsor. “We need to expand our athletic facili- ties. especially in locker rooms and storage area.” Art Wells (Up Rt) teaches Biology. Chemistry, and Advanced Biology. His hobbies include photography, gardening, fishing, and camping. “Offer semester length courses; offer more variety of courses; More equipment and supplies. David Pierce (Rt) teaches Practical math, business math, advanced math (Trig and Calculus), and Phys- ics. He is head Wrestling coach, assistant coach dur- ing track, and is Student Council Sponsor. “I would like to see more subjects added to the curriculum helping to get rid of some unwanted study halls. I suppose the students should be allowed to have some sort of smoking area until they ruin that privilege. to Jana Kuhn (Lt) is instructor for Typing. Advanced Typing, and Shorthand. She is Annual Spon- sor and enjoys dancing, reading, sewing and water skiing. I would like to see the students become more mature and responsible for the property on school grounds. We desperately need to up-date equipment and facilities: but until the students can demon- strate that they can take care of them, the school administration will not budget for them.” Stephen Ludwig (Up Lt) teaches English I, English II. and is coach for the Freshman boys’ basketball team. He enjoys snow skiing and breeding St. Bernard dogs. Robert Cope teaches Spanish I, and II. along with French I and II. This is the first year for the French II class. Mr. Cope sponsors the Foreign Lan- guage club. He enjoys guns, cars, and motorcycles. 11 Ron Matthews (above) is in his second year of direct- ing band for the high school as well as the middle school. He coaches ensembles and solos for competi- tion. Mr. Matthews enjoys tennis, golf, reading, and listening to records. There seems to be better com- munication between teachers and students. I feel there is a better atmosphere for learning. I'm not sure what changes have contributed to this better atmos- phere. though.” Charles Self (Up Rt) is teacher coordinator of CCVEP. Mr. Self is also the Sponsor of DECA. He enjoys golf, and showing German Shepherd dogs. I would like to see a change in the graduation require- ments. that is Seniors will pass 5 out of 7 subjects or 3 out of 4 for CCVEP students. It is my feeling that this would correct disciplinary problems for the seniors. We need to have students' pride in the school. The school is as good as the students make it.” Jack Schreiner (Lower Rt) is another new face at BUS. He teaches Citizenship. Health, and Psychology. He is Coach for the girls’ basketball teams. Mr. Schreiner taught school for four years before coming to Basehor. “I need to make more money.” 12 Marilyn B. Anderson (Rt) is teacher for English III. Newswrit- ing, and News-Production. She also sponsors the Photography Club and is BREEZE Advisor. “I would like to see more student involvement in exciting school activities.” Ruth Grube is librarian for both the high school and the middle school. Mrs. Grube is also the Junior Class sponsor. Anton Zouplna (above) is a first year teacher at Bas- ehor, where he teaches Vocal Music. He comes from New York and developed a serious interest in music upon attending college. “A continued cooperative administration and staff working towards providing all the students with a better education.” 13 Del Garrison (above) has taught Drafting. Woodwork, and Driver Education during his 13 years at Basehor. He is also the Junior Class Sponsor. There needs to be more accountability for absences from class (skips), tar- dies. and students roaming the building during class.” Chris Anderson (Up Rt) teaches American History and American Government. Mr. Anderson is the Senior Class sponsor, and director of the Senior Play. Marieta McMillen (above) directs Art I, Advanced Art. and Crafts. She is also Jr. Class Co-Sponsor. Mrs. McMillen was an artist at Hallmark Cards for four years, and taught at Wyandotte and St. Joseph High Schools. “Some definite action taken about students who skip classes or are repeatedly tardy. Clamp down on students in hall without passes — teachers should be held accountable when students are allowed to leave their room without passes. Arts and Crafts classes should be graded by semester, not by the year.” M Gail Brimhall (Lt) teaches girls’ Physical Education and science. She coaches Volleyball, Girls’ Track, and Drill Team. She has taught gymnastics, cheer- leading, and dance nationwide for the past 9 years. “New girls’ locker rooms, new athletic uniforms for the girls.” J. Andrew Nelson (Md Rt) is Counselor. He has a music degree from college and taught music for 25 years, including 9 at Basehor. Anything out-of-doors comes under the heading of his hobby. He hopes to be the first to greet Bigfoot and the U.F.O.’s. “We added a teacher and a class- room this year. We badly need two more classrooms and three more teachers for our school to obtain more efficiency.” Jerry Layton (Lower Lt) teaches Accounting. Eco- nomics, and 8th grade typing. He is Head Football coach, J.V. Basketball coach, and sponsor of “B” Club. Mr. Layton has coached at B.H.S. for 5 years, and enjoys hunting and playing golf. “More student inter- est in activities. Better facilities — Academic and Athletic.” 15 Bob Mendelsohn is another new teacher. He teaches Algebra 1. II. and Geometry. Mr. Mendelsohn is also Pep Club Sponsor. He attended Washington Univer- sity (St. Louis) and Kansas University. His hobbies include reading, playing guitar, and fixing up his old house. “More semester courses. Also, consistency in curriculum and discipline by the faculty.” Peggy Westerhouse Collier teaches Home Economics I and II. Family and Home Living, and Foods and Textile. Mrs. Collier enjoys swimming, skiing, sewing, and tennis. She is also sponsor of FHA and was elected the District Sponsor. She received her B.S. in Education from Kansas State College of Pittsburg. Bill Chester teaches the Basic English course for BHS. and is the Industrial Arts teacher for the Jr. High. He has an M.S. in psychology, and a B.S. in Education from Emporia State University. His hobbies include pitching horseshoes in tourna- ments. working with wood, and helping people. “I like the way they walled off the sections in the shop room very much. We need to have the bells in both schools ringing together. Students should not be allowed to run around in the halls during class periods. Students should also show more respect for their teachers and keep open affections for pri- vate.” 16 CLASSES ou must not know too much, or be too precise or scientific about birds and trees and flowers and watercraft; . . . You shall walk where only the wind has walked before. Nancy Newhall Pep Club This year Pep Club was under the direction of two sponsors. The first semester was sponsored by Miss Sandra Gil. In January Mr. Bob Mendelsohn came in charge and did a really fine job. The Pep Club finally started to get things rolling again. On January 20 the Pep Club sponsored a mixer after the Bobcats beat Piper in bas- ketball. March was a planning month for Pep Club. For instance, planning fund-raising projects, the Athletic Banquet, uniform selection, and next year's cheerleaders were just a few of the topics discussed. A Sadie Hawkins dance was held April 1 and cheerleading tryouts were April 24 and 26. The Athletic Banquet, which is the last big project for Pep Club, was Thursday, May 11. The executive board of Pep Club this year includes Sherry Brooks. Tammy Wilson. Kim Christoff. Libby Lorance. Mary Jancich, Linda Schaefer and Lynne Conn. Running through for a victory is senior. A contribution of $500 had been awarded to the club in 1976-1977 by Mrs. Wadlinger, a former graduate of Basehor High School and editor of the Basehor Breeze. David Juranich. an influential member, has also helped a great deal in the ordering and receiving the equipment necessary for the darkroom. The first prints produced by the darkroom were released in December of 1977. 62 FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA FHA In September FHA put on a watermelon feed to get girls together. At the end of the year the team voted many awards to be given to the best wrestlers. They are as follows: Most Valuable. Ken Johnson: Most Muscles. Brian Sass: Most Dedicated. Jack Williams: Most Injuries. Tony Distefano; and The Most Exciting Win, Steve Trieb. The winner of the coveted Hot Dog went to Tony Lowe. Once again the Cats were represented at state with two of our best wrestlers. Steve Trieb made the trip to Beloit by placing 4th at regionals. This happened to be Steve’s first year so we're really looking forward to next year. Ken Johnson, on the other hand, made it to state for his second year in a row by placing 4th. Sherry Brooks clinched the new school record in the high jump with a leap of 5'4 , which broke the old record of 4'8 set in 1975. Brooks now holds the Jay hawk League record in the high jump. Another bright spot on the team was Kim Hoffman who captured the school's 880 yard relay record with a timing of 2:35. which broke the 1973 record of 2:42.7. Something that happens to all of us — the first time we fall in love. All the little things that happened which are so impor- tant — like wondering if he’ll call again — wondering what will hap- pen on the first date — our ring — the smell of popcorn — all those wonderful moments that change your whole life. The Junior Play this year portrayed the feelings and events of first love in their presentation of “We Were Young That Year. Undaunted by the fact that he has lost the last seven elections to Fletcher Crawford, Uncle Elwyn enlists the help of Bobbie, the younger Wilkens daughter, to launch his campaign. Somewhat less enthusiastic is Father, who is weary of having his house turned into a campaign headquarters every two years, so he lays down the law to Uncle Elwyn and the whole family — no more campaigning from the Wilkens house. This crushes Uncle Elwyn’s plans; but it also crushes the plans of Mayor Craw- ford who likes to have Uncle Elwyn run against him because “it unites the voters behind me.” The play is a very funny comedy and in the end turns everyone crazy.
