He was there... He was there on August 27, the first day of school when we, as freshman, first walked excitedly through the halls of BHS. His heart leapt with joy at the prospect of 45 new students cheering eagerly - their hearts now loyal to the green and white. He sat as silently as a shadow on the night of our Homecoming game, and he shared with all of us the feeling of pride as our varsity team ran onto the field. He watched intently as each maid was escorted to her throne. During the many Pep Assemblies, as the school song echoed throughout the gym, his staunch form could be seen shining, and his mighty voice was heard over the crowds enthusiastic yells. His presence was felt by all on those frosty evenings on the football field during football games and on each crowded, stuffy night in the gym during basketball season. Yes, he was always with us. Every day he was left alone to wander down the deserted halls. He smiled to himself as he thought that what we had accomplished that day was to go with us to face all our tomorrows, and that these accomplishments would contribute to that adventure called life. He shed a tear with each of us on our Class Night as we brought back to mind those unforgettable events of our past four years at BHS. He knew our feeling as we walked down the halls of BHS for the last time and when we received that long awaited diploma on graduation night. He knew that the past four years had taught us to face the future with a whole and happy heart, and he was content. How can we forget his sportsmanship in accept- ing defeat or his humility in meeting victory? His spirit will linger with all of us long after our days at BHS are through. He is the green and white, the spirit, the courage, the fight....................................... .. .our mighty BOBCAT.

Congratulations, Class of 1971 Commencement for you is at hand—not gradua- tion. You will never truly graduate until your earthly journey has ended. This is not an end for you, only a beginning, truly a commencement. For twelve years now you have been fashioning a “bag of tools” for this commencement time. I hope you have fashioned them well and that they will serve you effectively as you work with your fellow- man to solve the problems which you will face as you journey down the road of life. You must be prepared to continually re-fashion this “bag of tools” for your generation, more than any other before in the history of man, must hold itself flexible and ready to accept change as it faces up to the problems of our present time and the challenges of the years ahead. Good luck. Class of 1971, and “get with it.” Ward L. Kiester Superintendent Instruction and Leadership... Dear Students: Congratulations on another successful year. Per- haps your experiences at Basehor High School have been filled with “good times” as well as “bad”. I only hope that the “good times” have out weighed the “bad” and that you can take the “good times” and build on these stepping stones and pleasant experiences for the future. This is a time for reflection; for evaluation; for decision making; to determine where you will go in the future—to decide what you will do with your life. I am sure you realize, as you reflect, that your education is not finished nor perhaps will it ever be completed. Each year, of which this annual is a testimonial, is merely a step into the future. Good luck as you advance through school and life. Good luck as you step through the future. Sincerely, James E. Campbell, Principal 4
