Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1971 volume:

We Present the BASEHOR BOBCAT of 1971 Editor: Janet Thomas Assistant Editor: Libby Creason Sponsor: Miss Zang He was there... He was there on August 27, the first day of school when we, as freshman, first walked excitedly through the halls of BHS. His heart leapt with joy at the prospect of 45 new students cheering eagerly - their hearts now loyal to the green and white. He sat as silently as a shadow on the night of our Homecoming game, and he shared with all of us the feeling of pride as our varsity team ran onto the field. He watched intently as each maid was escorted to her throne. During the many Pep Assemblies, as the school song echoed throughout the gym, his staunch form could be seen shining, and his mighty voice was heard over the crowds enthusiastic yells. His presence was felt by all on those frosty evenings on the football field during football games and on each crowded, stuffy night in the gym during basketball season. Yes, he was always with us. Every day he was left alone to wander down the deserted halls. He smiled to himself as he thought that what we had accomplished that day was to go with us to face all our tomorrows, and that these accomplishments would contribute to that adventure called life. He shed a tear with each of us on our Class Night as we brought back to mind those unforgettable events of our past four years at BHS. He knew our feeling as we walked down the halls of BHS for the last time and when we received that long awaited diploma on graduation night. He knew that the past four years had taught us to face the future with a whole and happy heart, and he was content. How can we forget his sportsmanship in accept- ing defeat or his humility in meeting victory? His spirit will linger with all of us long after our days at BHS are through. He is the green and white, the spirit, the courage, the fight....................................... .. .our mighty BOBCAT. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Congratulations, Class of 1971 Commencement for you is at hand—not gradua- tion. You will never truly graduate until your earthly journey has ended. This is not an end for you, only a beginning, truly a commencement. For twelve years now you have been fashioning a “bag of tools” for this commencement time. I hope you have fashioned them well and that they will serve you effectively as you work with your fellow- man to solve the problems which you will face as you journey down the road of life. You must be prepared to continually re-fashion this “bag of tools” for your generation, more than any other before in the history of man, must hold itself flexible and ready to accept change as it faces up to the problems of our present time and the challenges of the years ahead. Good luck. Class of 1971, and “get with it.” Ward L. Kiester Superintendent Instruction and Leadership... Dear Students: Congratulations on another successful year. Per- haps your experiences at Basehor High School have been filled with “good times” as well as “bad”. I only hope that the “good times” have out weighed the “bad” and that you can take the “good times” and build on these stepping stones and pleasant experiences for the future. This is a time for reflection; for evaluation; for decision making; to determine where you will go in the future—to decide what you will do with your life. I am sure you realize, as you reflect, that your education is not finished nor perhaps will it ever be completed. Each year, of which this annual is a testimonial, is merely a step into the future. Good luck as you advance through school and life. Good luck as you step through the future. Sincerely, James E. Campbell, Principal 4 The BOBCAT Staff wishes to express the appreciation of the Student body of B.H.S. to the members of the Board of Education for their devoted work in bringing to this school district a higher standard of learning. It is through their careful deliberation that the Basehor-Linwood School District is becoming one of the best educated areas in the State. Standing: Mr. Robert L. Williamson, Mr. Wayne D. To Class of 1971: Four years ago we entered into these hallowed halls of learning as frightened Freshman. It doesn't seem possible that it was so long ago. But time goes fast, we're no longer those frightened Freshmen. We've finally reached the Utopian height as Seniors. We have shared many laughs and good times together, as well as few bad, while we have been in good old BUS. Although we are the smallest class in Basehor, we do have accomplishments of which we can be proud and which we can look back upon with fond memories. Most of us will hate to leave BHS but, as they say, all good things must come to an end sometime. Much Luck, Donna Hoppe, President Class of 1971 JOHN EDGAR DAVOREN Key Club 2,3,4, V. Enjoy To the Class of ’73: I would like to congratulate our class for showing initiative and growing spirit. We had our ups and downs, but our spirit never died. When things weren’t going our way we worked that much harder to straighten them out. Our initiative and growing spirit was proudly displayed through- out the year, especially the Music Carnival. Most of our success goes to our great sponsor, Mr. Johnson. I hope this year will be just one stepping stone toward the bright future ahead for the great class of ’73. Sincerely yours. Prosperous This year the Sophomore class decided to have some- thing different for their bake sale. Dressed up as a clown, Janet Timmons, tries to wave in customers from the street. 2G Year The Sophomore class meets three or four times a semester. During these meetings plans are made for money-making projects, parties, the music carnival, etc. This year, the carnival king and queen, Dennis Kelly and Linda Russell, were members of our class. Boy and Girl Staters Enjoy Learning BOYS STATE John Davoren represented his city as mayor. “Boys' State was an experience that proved to be very enjoyable and worthwhile to me. While I was there I learned a lot about our government and its various branches. I also took part in court sessions, public hearings, etc. At Boys’ State I met many people and left with many friends.” “I enjoyed having the chance to go to Boys’ State. It gave me a chance to not only learn about state and local govern- ment, but it also gave me an opportunity to meet other Boy Staters. I learned the powers of local government for better understanding when I was elected mayor of my city. During my free hours, I noticed the spirit of my city and county as we participated in different contests. For the most part, I enjoyed Boys’ State and recommend that our junior boys apply to go.” David Banzhaf enjoyed himself and learned much. “My week at Sunflower Girls’ State was filled with the learning of government and making new and wonderful friends. My most memorable evening was the night of the candlelight service where each city was acknowledged. 1 wish every girl had the opportunity to attend Girls’ State and to take advantage of the government insight they offer.” 30 Marian was council woman of her city. These boys represent leadership, cooperation, and service to their school, community, and nation. The Key Club started off their year with a pancake feed followed by a new money-making project: to sell cotton candy at basketball games. In late winter they had a very informal Key Club Dance, and in early spring they had their annual Key Club Convention. Painting the football bleachers served as one of their projects. Each club member has contri- buted to make this a success- ful year and a special note of thanks is extended to Mrs. Dillard, sponsor. The fashion show is traditional. These members devoted many hours arranging pages and meeting deadlines. The success of the 1971 BOBCAT depends upon this staff. A special thanks is extended to Miss Zang for her patient advice throughout the year. Sophomore Editor Barbara Klamm, Freshman Editor Patty Porter, and Activity Editors Anita and Marian Gravatt Junior Editor Elaine Aldridge. 69 Sports Editor David Chiles John Morgan suggest a color scheme. Jeff Wright, BREEZE Editor. Breeze Prospers The many hours in which I, and the rest of the staff have devoted to the BREEZE this year, have been hours full of frustration, fun, and a lot of hard work. I would like to thank everyone on the staff—the reporters and especially the hard-working production staff. Not many people realize all the work that has to be done on the pro- duction staff. The students and faculty see only the finished product. I would like to thank Loretta Porter, Teresa Millsap, Nancy Kaderly, and Barbara Klamm in particular. They were four of the people mainly responsible for the production of the paper. The most exciting part of being editor of the BREEZE will be the beginning of next year when we will receive our grade from Quill and Scroll Society. Belonging to this honorary society gives the staff and myself something to look forward to, and a goal in which we can try to achieve. —The Editor Cindy Shaughncssy, BREEZE Co-Editor Production Staff: N.
