Dedication In dedicating our 1961 Bobcat to you, J. Andrew Nelson, we are expressing in a small way our appreciation to you for your work at BHS these past nine years. Our splendid vocal and instrumental music groups bear testimony to your efforts in this area. Your dynamic leadership in the classroom and in your profession of teaching have challenged and stimulated us. Your interest in us as individuals and in our development as such has been helpful and appreciated. Administration Board of Education Milton Meyer, Clerk; J. W. Kenton, Director; W. L. Kiester, Principal; Myron Keeslar, Treasurer. To these dedicated citizens we students of BHS owe a great debt of gratitude for the many hours of time that they devote each year to the interest of our school and its program. Especially to Mr. Kenton we wish to pay a special tribute, as he retires from the board this year after twenty-seven years of unselfish devotion to the welfare of BHS and its students. Ward L. Class History An exciting event took place in 1957; the class of 61 entered high school! There were 30 eager freshmen who outnumbered every other class in the school. Among the 30 were two sets of twins, which was spectacular in itself. The class officers for the first year were Janet McNamee, President; Linda Wacker, Vice-President; Marsha Butler, Secretary-Treasurer; and Linda Porter, Student Council Representative. Mr. Jennings was the class sponsor. As sophomores the class of 61 chose Virgil Florence, Don Knipp, Linda Porter, and Darlene Van Tuyl as class officers and Mr. Cink was the sponsor for the class. They had fun initiating the green freshmen. When school started in the fall of '59 the class of 61 were upperclassmen! The play Teen Time was presented by the juniors later than originally planned; snow covered the ground and the play had to be postponed. The annual Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom for the seniors was presented as a result of the planning and hard work of the class sponsor, Mrs. Schilling, and the members of the junior class. The theme of the prom was Blue Hawaii and was beautiful indeed. The class officers were Barbara Meyer, Don Knipp, Darlene Van Tuyl, and Virgil Florence. The final year arrived for the class of 61, and the seniors were still the largest class in school. Barbara Hills, Virgil Florence, Linda Wacker, and Darlene Van Tuyl were the class officers. Tiger on his Toes was the hit play given by the seniors. In the spring the seniors went on a trip to the Ozarks, had barrels of fun, and managed to keep the class sponsor, Mr. Kiester, awake most of the time! The year was almost over and the seniors had many fond memories of their high school years. The class of 61 seemed to specialize in royalty. Their Carnival King candidate won for three years and their Carnival Queen candidate won their sophomore year. They had had three Homecoming Princesses and Homecoming Queen their senior year. Sports was a specialty, too. The boys excelled in football, basketball, and track. In track they are responsible for setting new school records in the low hurdles and medley relay, helping to set new ones in the mile relay and 880 relay, and tying the 100 and 220 yard dash records. While the boys were playing, the girls cheered them to victory. All four years the cla . of 61 was represented as cheerleaders. During their sophomore year they stood the other three classes in the magazine sales and won. The entire four years the high salesman from magazine sales was a member of the class of 61. Baccalaureate and Class Night were May 21 and 23 respectively. On May 25 a climax was reached as 30 seniors in royal blue caps and gowns received their diplomas. The class of 61 will remember high school as four wonderful years. For the editors it is assigning articles, writing articles, pasting up dummy copies, and trying to supervise the work in general. The reporters write, and the typists type, and the sponsors do a little of everything. Finally the paper rolls off the press. Ask any student who's ever worked on the Breeze and he or she can tell you of that final moment when all the work is done; that moment that makes it all worthwhile. SPONSORS--Mrs. Kelly, Mr. Haney. It is sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club. In the year '60-'61, the club has been responsible for a jukebox in the gym. They have also been the impetus behind a Fall and Spring dance. Also in the spring, several delegates attended the annual Key Club convention in Hutchinson, Kansas, where they found more ideas for a better club. In the spring of '61 they sponsored Orientation day and gave fresh- men-to-be a glimpse into the school life of BHS students. The club earns money for the awards and sweaters given to their members through such money making projects as bake sales and a concession stand at the home basketball games. Casual observation of any bright eyed sparkly member will show that the Pep Club is a school spirit builder of the first class. With the National Honor Society existing in our school, it is the wish of every student to earn good grades so that he or she may be invited to join this organization. The Scholaris chapter of the National Honor Society was installed at Basehor in 1959. It has been in the past and will con- tinue to be in the future an inspiration to the development of scholastic ability, char- acter, and leadership service. CAPTAINS Magazine Sales A spirit of friendly competition exists between the various classes during two weeks of each year when BHS students engage in the money making project of selling mag- azine subscriptions. The money that is earned goes into the Student Council Treas- ury. The Freshman-Senior team devastated Sophomore-Junior opposition with earnings of over $700 compared to Sophomore-Junior earnings of $500. Out of this total amount earned, the school retained $450 profit. The climax of the Sales brought a real sense of accomplishment to all those who took part. One-Act Play Cast The curtain rises and a momentary hush falls over the audience. Then the well rehearsed actors and act- resses move into the world of drama, performing under close surveillance before a qualified judge. It is drama festival time! This year we are proud to proclaim the fact that our one-act play cast received a I rating and a trophy in the Tri-County League competition. In District competition we earned a II. This year’s one-act play was Squaring It With the Boss. Appearing in the cast were Skip Walden, Kathy Waters, Gary Kenton, Ed Petitt, Marsha Butler, and LaDean Prelesnik. Goes To District Tiger On His Toes Under the direction of Mr. Kiester on November 18, 1960, the Senior class presented their play. Cuthbert Blevins, played by Ted Box, is a lovable ballet dancer acting as a football player to please his wealthy uncle. Com- plications just naturally set in. Appearing in the cast with Ted were Virgil Florence, Darlene Van Tuyl, Barbara Meyer, Anita Wacker, David Earls, Tom Flan- agan, Glenn Mussett, Linda Wacker, Martha Jennings, Cheryl Martin, Cindy Smith, Marsha But- ler, Bill Ducey, Ed Petitt, and Steve Marshall. Extras were Barb- ara Hills, Janet McNamee, Linda Porter, Earlene Jones, and Faye Carney. Junior Play The junior class presented the three act comedy, Let William Tell, and starred Roger Brandt as William. William was a big hearted boy whose mouth was, un- fortunately, too big for anyone's good. Others in the cast were Peggy Garrison, Bill Bailey, Kathy Waters, Russ Hansen, Kathy Eyerly, Jay Dee Downing, Rosalie Thomas, Joyce Doron, Susan Creason, Sharon Johnson, Ann Elmer, and Charlotte Wilkes. The play was directed by Mr. Kiester. An Evening In A Garden Of Friendship The atmosphere of Friendship began with a welcoming speech by Joyce Garrison, and continued with Barbara Hills voicing the thanks of the senior class.
