DEDICATION We, the annual staff of I960, wish to dedicate this annual to Mr. Gordon L. Wakefield to show our appreciation for all of the things he has done during the past two years for the students. He has shown us consideration and understanding for which we are very grateful. The high standards of excellence to which he held us and his personal interest in our successes and accomplishments will long be remembered by those of us whom he taught. We consider him a good representative of the teaching profession. We hope that he will be successful and that he will always remember Basehor Rural High School. Thank you, Mr. Wakefield, for having been our teacher. I .Z.72 —TT —1 - ——— . — r Standing 1. to r.: Barbara Wiley, Virgil Florence, Kathy Eyerly, Donald Hein. Seated 1. to r.: Steven Marshall, Vice President; Dan Reardon, President; Janet McNamee, Secretary-Treasurer; Mr. W. L. Kiester, Principal. STUDENT COUNCIL Our Student Council is an introduction to the principles and practices of applied democracy. It gives the students an opportunity for service to the student body and cooperation with the school administration. Not only do council members learn to cooperate with one another, but they are taught to do something for one another. Our Student Council is a concrete base which serves as a foundation upon which adult citzenship is built. The Student Council's thinking and decisions reached in the school are translated into action in the community and the state when good citzenship, good manners, courtesy, and consideration for others are practiced. The Student Council gives its members wisdom in the methods of democracy at work, qualifies them for leadership, and trains them In the paths of cooperative assistance. We, the student body, place our trust In our Student Council and we feel that we are effectively served by its members. fc EDITOR’S MESSAGE Remember the first day of school when you greeted old friends and new ones? How about freshman initiation and the party that night? Then came the football games and homecoming, the magazine sales. Dad's Supper, Music Carni- val, and the Senior Play. Then, with the approach of winter came the basketball season. Tense with excitement, the teams were cheered on. In the midst of all this came the much anticipated Christmas party and vacation. Along with the snow came the Tri- County League and District Tournaments and the Junior Play. The snow stayed longer than usual, delaying spring, but not the activities of the music festivals, One-Act Play, Easter, spring concert, track and the Student Council election. Not long ago we had the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, the track meet at Abeles Field, freshman orientation, and the Senior's trip to the Ozarks. The many activities of the last week of school: Baccalaureate, class and award night, and commencement, shall be long remembered. These activities and others are recorded in the I960 BOBCAT. The staff hopes that this year's annual will be a cherished memento of this school year--a reminder of your favorite classmates as well as those wonderful hours spent in the many extra- curricular activities. Pera Recessional................Basehor School Band SENIOR TRIP Seniors When Don Mike Dan Judy Harold Judith Were Dale Once upon a time In September of 1956, BHS was invaded by ll). youthful Fresh- men straight from the State Farm. An election was held, which was fixed, and Judy Calovich was elected President; Don Hein, Vice President; and Tom Hannah Secretary-Treasurer. They were initiated by the Sophomores who dressed them up in crazy grabs, painted them red with lipstick, and gave them an idea of how horrible school life can be. Garden seeds were sold to raise money, which was embezzled. This was a wonderful year for the FHA, Future Hoodlums of America. Time rolled on and with it school came again. As Sophomores they got to initiate all those poor ignorant kids into the happy high school life. Don Hein was elected President of the mob, L. A. Jennings, Vice President and Judith Dye, Secretary-Treasurer. The kids all studied hard and soon the year was over. On one can stop onward pressing time so school began again (much to the displeasure of the class of '60). Now upperclassmen they really put their hearts into their studying of hoodlum ways. Candy and pop were sold during noon hours and at home football games. Dale Kuehnhoff was elected President (by unpopular vote), Tom Hannah, Vice President, and L. A. Jennings, Secretary-Treasurer. We put on the Junior-Senior Prom which was a tremendous flop. Time I oh time I and another miserable year. Officers were: Don Hein, Presi- dent, Judith Dye, Vice President, and L. A. Jennings Secretary-Treasurer, (people vote the way they are told when they have a knife in their back). The Seniors put on a play in which we almost lost Harold Kemler in the morgue. This year was the best year yet! You'll know how good the Seniors feel if you know how a convict feels when he's only got a few weeks until he'll break out into the rat race of life. The Seniors wanted to take a trip to Alcatraz but had to settle on visiting Bagnell Dam at the Lake of the Ozarks instead. So the Seniors have left an unmistakable mark on BHS, mainly a nearly ruined school and an exhausted faculty I, L. A. Jennings, will my ability to make people look up to me to Loretta Downing, and my scholastic ability to Roger Marshall. I, Mike Downing, will ray ability to get detentions to Joyce Doron, and my 26 inch waist to David Earls. I, Judith Dye, will my ability to hook a boy to Rosalie Thomas, and my Greek Encyclopedia to Glenn Mussett to help him interpret Mr. Kiester's writing. I, Bill Lewis, will my ability to tear out trans- missions to Martha Jennings. I, Dale Kuehnhoff, will my address book to Bill Ducey, and a club to Dean Oroke 3ince he is next years Annual Sports Editor to held him get along with Mrs. Kelly. I, Dan Reardon, will Mr3.
