DEDICATION Dear Mom and Dad, We, the members of the Annual Staff, on behalf of the student body, dedicate this Annual to you, our parents, for your part in our education. Your understanding attitude toward our school activities, your presence at our school functions, and your support of our clubs and organizations has given us strength and courage to continue our climb up the ladder of education. We cannot forget your love, your guidance and your patience. Without your help we could never have advanced this far in becoming good, useful citizens. To show you in a small way our gratitude and appre- ciation, we dedicate this, the 1959 Bobcat, to you, our parents. ANNUAL STAFF OF '59 DMINISTRATION BOARD OF EDUCATION J. W. Kenton J. We started our Freshmen year with 16 members. We chose as our class officers; John Hoch, President; Joyce McNa- mee, Vice-President; Eleanor Gruendel, Secretary and Treasurer and Becky Prater as Student Council Representative. Just after we arrived as Freshmen we wereinitiatedby the Sophomores. During the year we lost Louise McDowell and Junior Ritchie and gained Edith Wylie. Mr. Hubbard was our Class sponsor. When we arrived back at B. H. S. to start our Sophomore year, we had fifteen members in our class, as we had gained Carolyn Burgett. We worked hard to make money for our class by having doughnut sales, which were very successful. We chose as our class officers; Becky Prater, President; Joyce Box, Vice-President; Eleanor Gruendel, Secretary and Treasurer; and Stella Trail Student Council Representative. Eleanor Gruendel was elected as Carnival Queen. We had as our class sponsor, Mr. Cink. Edith Wylie left us that year, so we ended up with four- teen members. We started our Junior year with 15 members, as we had lost Jim Elmer and gained Roger White, Dorothy Knipp and Helen Pate. During the year we lost Helen Pate and Joyce Cunningham but during the last semester gained Glenna Jones. Class officers were chosen as follows: President, Roger White; Vice-President, Hugh Hayward; Secretary and Treasurer, Becky Prater, and Student Council Representative, Joyce McNa- mee. The class made money for the Jr. and Sr. Banquet by sell- ing pop and candy at noon, having concession stands at foot- ball games, and having bake sales and selling Christmas cards. In May we presented the Seniors with a beautiful banquet. We owe much of our success to our sponsor, Mrs. Schilling. Becky Prater reigned as Carnival Queen. This is our final year at dear old B. H. S. and we have made these years ones that we will all long remember. Class officers were: Glenna Jones, President; Jerry Bot- kin, Vice-President; Stella Trail, Secretary and Treasurer; and Eleanor Gruendel, Student Council Representative. We lost Glenna Jones during the last semester, and Hugh Hayward was elected as our President. During the last semes- ter we gained Donna Weinert from Lansing High School. Joyce Box reigned as Homecoming Queen, with Joyce McNamee and Eleanor Gruendel as princesses. The class left April 30th for New Orleans, Louisiana, on our Senior trip, which we had been looking forward to for four long years. We had a wonderful weekend and a trip that we will never forget. We would all like to thank our sponsor, Mr. Kie3ter for his help on the trip and throughout our high school years. Our days at B. H. S. were finished by having Baccalaureate on May 17; Class night on May 18, and Commencement on May 21. We, the Seniors, say farewell to a wonderful school and many wonderful friends we will never forget. The Latin word Scholaris, meaning scholar, was the name selected for our chapter. Every student who has a grade average of a B and no grade below a C is automatically considered for membership. It is then up to the Chapter Council composed of the faculty of Basehor High to decide whether they qualify in the other fields. The teacher chosen to sponsor the Scholaris Chapter is Mr. Wakefield. The Marching Band got right into the swing of things, marching for all home football games, highlighted by the Homecoming Game. As has been our custom, Basehor was one of the many bands that took part in KU's Band Day Parade and game program. After marching through the city of Lawrence we all went out to the stadium where we saw KU play Tulane. Our Band was also in the massed letters forming Band Day KU 1958 at half time. The Band also played a short concert for the Music Carnival on November 14, after which the music students ran the many concessions. The Mixed Chorus sang, The Chorus in the Skies by Holton on December 14 for our Christmas Vespers. Soloists were Joyce McNamee, Stella Trail, Tom Flanagan, Gary Criswell, and Eleanor Gruendel. During the winter months the band kept busy playing for all home basketball games. In addition we formed with Tonganoxie Band in February to present separate concerts at Tonganoxie and Basehor. Also during February Mr. Nelson attended the National Education Association Southwest Music Conference at Wichita along with the directors from Kansas and six other states. Our Tri-County Music Festival was held at Basehor on March 20. The guest director was Mr. Raymond Culp of Baker University. Basehor Music Department entered several numbers: Band, Chorus, Girls Trio, Mixed Ensemble, Sax Quartet, Clarinet Trio, and vocal solos by Joyce McNamee, Stella Trail, and Gary Criswell. On April 26 the Clarinet Trio, composed of Darlene Van Tuyl , Linda Porter, and Anita Wacker, went to Emporia for the State Festival ana returned with a III.
