Asa has been loyal and made many friends during his custodian work here at Basehor Hiah. His increasing patience and sincere helpful- ness have contributed greatly toward the happiness and success of our school life. We hereby want to say Thanks Asa. 7 Left to rightt W. L. Kiester, Principal; Ed Williams, Clerk; J. W. Kenton, Director; and Myron Keeslar, Treasurer. 0ngratulations to the graduating class The Board of Education wishes to congratulate the Class of '58, the fiftieth class to graduate from on the milestone you have reached in your live8. We wish to express our appreciation and gratitude to the many fine teachers and parents who have worked together through the years to produce keen, intelligent, alert boys and girls equipped with the fundamentals which will enable them to take their proper places in society as useful, worthwhile, productive citizens; a credit to themselves, their home, and their school. It is indeed a joy and a pleasure to be of service to an institution which strives to render an efficient and worthwhile program to the community which it serves. The Class of '58 can take its place proudly and with honor in the long list of distinguished and illustrious groups which have received their diplomas and are now witnesses of B.H.S. We would like to commit to you for very serious consideration the words of Van Dyke, who once said: Four things a man mu3t learn to do if he would make his record true: To think without confusion clearly; To love his felloumen sincerely; To act from honest motives purely; To trust in God and Heaven securely. Board of Education 3 It is a genuine pleasure to greet you students of Basehor High through the medium of the pages of your annual and to wish you success and happiness in the years ahead. It is my earnest hope that the problems you have had to cope with in school, both in the classroom and in the activity fields in which you have participated, have developed in you an ability to deal effectively with the problems of life and with the demands which will be made upon you. I also hope that as the years go by your recollections of the days spent here at Basehor High will be as pleasant as I am sure that the perusal of the pages of this book will be. Sincerely, W. L. Carol Johnson Rose Me ike1 June Keeslar Beverly Clark Cecil Mashbum HOW WE LOOKED THEN Jerry Box Joe Turner Ronnie Florence Dannie Taylor Norma Dannefer The class of 1958 came into being back in September of 1954 vixen we entered B.H.S. with nineteen members. Two weeks later we were initiated by the Sophomores. We soon lost Bon France and Bob Steele, and in the last se- mester Mary Cox and John Knight. We chose as our class officers: President, Jerry Box; Vice-President, Dannie Taylor; and Secretary-Treasurer, Joe Turner. DeAnn Lang was our Student Council Representative. We were well represented by the boys in football and basketball, and by the girls in Pep Club. Our class sponsor was Mr. Hubbard. We began our Sophomore year with fourteen members. We had lost Herman Knipp. We had gained Alvin Hannah from Washington High. Now it was our turn to initiate the freshmen and we surely did. Our class officers that year were: President, DeAnn Lang; Vice-President, Bob Butler; Secretary-Treasurer, Jerry Box; Student Council Representative, Carol Johnson. Mr. Cink was our class sponsor. Our Junior year we worked hard to make money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. We had a concession stand at football games, sold candy and pop at noon, sold Christmas cards, and gave our Junior Play, The Case of the Squealing Cat, directed by Mr. Kieater. We now had fifteen members as we gained Beverly Clark from Rosedale High and Bob Bunker from DeLaSalle. We elected our class of- ficers as follows: President, Dannie Taylor; Vice-President, Joe Turner; Sec- retary-Treasurer, June Keeslar; Student Council Representative,Alvin Hannah. We gave the seniors a banquet in May and owe much of its success to our spon- sor. Mrs. Schilling. Our final year arrived and now our class numbered seventeen as we lost Bob Bunker and gained Norma Dannefer from Burr Oak High and Cecil Mashbum from Wyandotte High. We elected the following officers: President, Joe Turner; Vice-President, Judy Steele; Secretary-Treasurer, Carol Johnson; Student Coun- cil Representative, Dannie Taylor. In the fall we presented our Senior Play, Bolts and Nuts, directed by Mr. Ktester, In the spring the juniors gave U3 a beautiful banquet and prom for which we are very grateful. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Kiester for the ex- cellent job he did as our sponsor. And now as we say Good-Bye to B.H.S. and the many friends we leave, we remember the good times we had and the joys we shared. 13 PROCESSIONAL.....................Baaehor School Band CALL TO WORSHIP..............Come Thou Almighty King (Congregation Remain Standing for Invocation) INVOCATION.......................Rev. The following is a short excerpt from the stories behind the headlines. The first thing that catches my eyes are the many cows owned by Joe Turner. Joe just sits in his rockino chair and bosses the hired help. The former DeAnn Lang is married to Bob DeMaranville is head of all the Conoco Stations in the United States. Jim Wilkes, once a milk hauler, now owns all the milk trucks in Kansas. Jim finally got that mansion that he wanted. Beverly Clark, an artist, is in Paris for a World Wide Convention of Artists. The Dean of the Women's College in Denver, Colorado is Norma Dannefer. I guess that is what happens when you go to college. The top bookkeeper for the Federal Deserve Banks is' June Keeslar. She always wanted a bookkeeping job and it looks as though she got it. Who is that comedian on T.V.? That's right, it is none other than Larry Steele. It seems as though Cecil Uashbum didn't waste his summers working for Phillips, he is now the head of the ■ company. I see that Carol Johnson got her job at Hallmark Card Company. She is secretary to the P-esident of the company. Dan Taylor is the new manager of the Ford Manu- facturing Plant. Well how do you like being manager rather than working on old beat-up cars? Rose Meikel is a world famous technician. She really had to work for her position. Good going Rose. Jerry Box, a famous scientific explorer is lost somewhere g™ in outer space. Judy Steele, head of the Scientific Lost and Found Department was placed in charge of the searching party. The World'3 Rodeo was held last week. A1 Hannah took first place in bronc riding. Goodness, would you look at that large farm. The name on the mailbox says Ronald Lindel. Looks as though Ronnie ha3 been a success. Ronnie Florence's public speaking helped him, he is now Congressmen from Texas. It looks as though we have a bachelor in our class. Bob Butler who is now at the World's Fair. Hit it again harder harder The three???? Best citizen???? Slawhead Annual's number one helper Aren't we priviledged? The first big day for the music department was September 28, K.U. Bnad Day. The big parade of bands was held in the morning. In the afternoon when K.U. played Oregon State on the gridiron, the bands played at half-time. The Carnival, which is sponsored by the music department, was held November 15. Sleeted to reign as king and queen were Eddie Pettit, Freshman, and Becky Prater, Junior. Just a month later, on December 15, the Christmas Cantata, The Infant Holy, wa3 presented by the mixed chorus. Things seemed to explode into activity starting with the music fes- tival at Lansing on March 21. Basehor entered thirteen numbers for this and all the music department participated in the massed chorus and band numbers under the direction of Leland Boberts. Then in quick succession came the district and state music festivals. The district music festival started on March 28. That day our band and chorus went to Lawrence to compete. Our chor us came back with a II rating and our band with a I rating. On March 29, a Saturday, our mixed ensemble•, girls trio, and various solos—Gary Criswell, Stella Trail, and Joyce McNamee went to Lawrence. These entries received, in order, the following ratings: II, II, II, II, and I. The only one eligible to compete on April 18 in the state music festival was Joyce McNamee, who received another I rating. Our Spring Concert, consisting of the band, various choral ensembles, and a solo, was held on April 25. The band and choru3 participated in Baccalaureate on May 18. On May 22, the band and mixed ensemble took part in Commencement. The pep band played for all home football and basketball games. The accompanists for the year were Stella Trail and Janet McNamee.
