■ FOREWORD It has been the sincere purpose of the Bobcat of 1956 to record effectively the events of an outstanding school year. As time goes on, may this volume bring to you memories of achievement, of happy and worthwhile ex- periences, of unselfish and lasting friendships and of the spirit of Basehor School. We dedicate this annual to Florence.Newberry who is retiring from the teaching profession at the end of this school year after nearly thirty years of service as a teacher to boys and girls—seven of those years to the youths of Basehor High School. The high standards of ex- cellence to which she held us and her personal interest in our success- es and accomplishments will long be remembered by those of us whom she taught. Thank you, Mrs. Newberry, for having been a teacher. Iloiinl of Mui'iif ion J. W. Kenton Director Edward Williams Clerk Richard C. Warden Treasurer Genevra M. Schilling English Home Economics B. S. Sanior Ha TOO MANY RELATIVES Harry and Mabel Savage are a pair of newlyweds deliriously In love with each other. Harry writes very poetic stories, which no editor seems to appreciate, and lives on an allowance from his Uncle Otto. The money really belongs to Harry; his father had left it to him when he died, appointing Uncle Otto in his will to take care of the family funds. Now, Uncle Otto is a sour old woman-hater, very much against the idea of marriage; there- fore the young love-birds have had to keep it a secret from him. Mabel's Aunt Ermlntrude, on the other hand, is all In favor of marriage and approves of the young couple. The fun begins when both Uncle Otto and Aunt Ermlntrude arrive un- expectedly at the Savages' apartment. Mabel and Harry have told them two different stories and have to keep them from comparing notes. This Is made a little easier by the fact that both Aunt Ermlntrude and Uncle Otto are very hard of hearing. All this time they are trying to impress Aunt Ermlntrude with a maid, who isn't really a maid but Lucifer Allen, an assistant editor. Mabel's sister Grade is trying to wangle a proposal from her boy friend Jasper Wilkins, who is one of the shyest youths alive and is more interested In prunes, Sraokey McGee a desperate criminal who wanders into their tiny apartment while fleeing from the law. Officer Butterfield, a poetic police- man and Mrs Donnelly their landlady, who is determined to get her rent. Of course, this doesn't make the boys very happy. Later when the girls leave the lobby to mail a letter the boys cook up a scheme. When the girls come back Dick and Johnny get some water from the bell boy and begin to shave with some shaving kits that Dtck has bought for his father. This settles the whole thing. L. Kiester HOLD EVERYTHING The story took place in a tourist home on Honeymoon Trail. The owner, Caroline Caruthers, and her colored maid, Niobe, were very happy when Niobe's voodoo beans and her lucky rabbit's foot helped to get some customers. Connie Morgan and Bee Will- iams were running away because Connie's dad wanted her to meet a friends son. Courtney and Connie fell in love not knowing that their dads wanted them to meet in the first place. Mrs. Gibbs, and her three daughters were on their way to Hollywood to be in the movies. Christopher Morgan, Connie's dad, learns of his bank being robbed and also of his daugh- ters new friend. The danger- ous and clever crooks, Steve and Andy, trade cars with Mrs. Gibbs to mix the detective up. Connie and Courtney find that they were running away from each other but landed in each others arms. The detect- ive out-smarted the crooks and took them to jail. Orin Carney senior and regular; James Hoch, senior; Doyle Duncanson, junior made up the first three places on the team. The other two positions on the team were filled from the following first team lettermen: James Klink- enberg and Jerry Klinkenberg, seniors; Fred Eyerly, Junior;Alvin Hannah and Jerry Box, sophomores; John Hoch, freshman. With only three lettermen back to start the Bobcat's Basket- ball season, Coach Cink was doubtful of a successful season. How- ever as the year went by our appreciated followers were suprised to see the so called Cinderella Team progress and grow into a group of hard fighting Bobcats determined not to be beaten easily by any team. The team won II4. and lost 8 games including a two-way tie for 2nd place with Easton in league play, 2nd place in the Tri-County League Tourney, and 2nd place in the District Tourney. The second team won 8 and lost 7 games with the following boys receiving second team letters: Don Taylor, Gale Knoche, Marion Miller, James Swope.
