Able instructors have charted a course in ex- cellence at all levels for all stu- dents. Student enthusiasm has been crowned by action, partici- pation, and success. Seldom have our students failed to reach their goals. 11 13 15 16 SPORTS Football Mike Year wood. James Murphy and Rocky Yearwood— Mascots of today are the Yellow Jackets of tomorrow Dennis Bruce strikes again for long yardage. Bartow High began the football season with great expectations for the Yellow Jackets. Expectations seemed valid when the Jackets beat Sebring's Blue Streaks. But, accidents and injuries took their toll— remember all those crutches? Although the Jackets struggled courageously, their victory over Dade City was to be their last. Our team was held scoreless by Plant City s defense, but left the Planter s only thirteen points at game’s end. During all the bad breaks of the season, the’ Yellow Jackets kept their morale and hopes high. The season s last game, the Kathleen game, proved the Jackets still had spirit as they rolled to a 13—0 lead, but due to more bad breaks, lost the game. “It’s not whether you win or lose that counts but how you play the game.” The faithful follow the Yellow Jackets to Kathleen. Although they lost the next two games to Arcadia and Lake Wales, the Jackets were able to defeat opponents in four games. Thus after Bar- tow’s victory over Haines City, January 17, the Yellow Jackets were tied with Plant Cit . Lake Wales, and Haines City for the Southwest Florida Conference champion- ship. Then the Jackets were upset by Haines City and Dade City which dropped them into a tie for second with Lake Wales. After a whopping victory over Wauchula, a spirited Jacket team stormed to their second straight Group title by defeating Auburndale, Rochelle, and Lake Wales, with the help of a spirited defense led by Danny Kragh. Fate dealt the Jackets a low blow as the Bartow cagers drew Gibbs of St. Petersburg as their opponent in the Region- als, where their loss put them out of further competition for State. Various stroking methods, such as freestyle, butter- fly, breaststroke, and backstroke, are used in swimming meets. Swimmers participate in such natant contests as medley relays, in which different contestants use dif- ferent strokes; individual medleys, in which a swimmer uses all strokes; 50 yard sprints; 100, 200, and 400 yard races.
