They are Melinda Turbe, Connie Bracewell, George Gagle, June Hafer- kamp, Eddie Owen, and John Lee Register. Under the able leadership of President Nick and the other officers, the Student Council did a won- derful job of maintaining unity and friendship throughout our student body and with the students of other schools. Also, due to great effort on the part of the Council, the morale of the students and their cooperation with the faculty and administration was at its peak. Lyle, we wonder what you and Pam could be writing on Andy's campaign poster to cause so many smiles. The most important project of the year was the purchasing of a school emblem to be placed on the administration building. The large emblem is molded in the form of a yellow jacket encircled with the name Summerlin Institute. A bird's eye view of June Haferkamp as she casts what she hopes will be a winning vote. The election of next year's Student Council officers is always an important time of the year. Students put into practice democracy in its highest form as shown in the above pictures. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Members of the National Honor Society are as follows—First Row: Lex Taylor, Lana Murray, Tom Holland, Fran Hunt, Bobby Har- rell, Brucie Reese, Gary Martin, Sue Collins. Second Row; Diane Tune, Patton Hyman, Pam Speight, Billie Jane Birge, Vicki Taylor, Orene Vaughan. Third Row: Bill Cammann. Ann Lake, Pat Cruce, Pearl Alexander, Ann Brown, Sandra Lanehart, Eric Kennedy. Members of the National Honor So- ciety must maintain a B” or better aver- age and must also excel in character, leadership, and service. It is the most honorable school organization to which a student may belong. The initiation is an impressive candlelight ceremony. Jan- ice Pamplin read to the students her theme, the writing of which is one of the requirements of all initiates. The major project of the Honor Soci- ety this year was the publication and dis- tribution of cards containing the Sum- merlin Code of Ethics. This year, as has been done in past years, members of the Society were elect- ed as delegates to the State Convention at Daytona Beach. 62 Members initiated this year are—First Row: Nancy Whitten. When Ko-Ko, the execu- tioner appears, he tells how he was taken from a county jail by a set of curious chances and raised to the exalted rank of Lord High Executioner. b6 To ask him what he means to do. Pooh-Bah and Pish-Tush punctually appear to Ko-Ko, and Ko-Ko replies that they should congratulate him because he has found a volunteer to be executed. At this, the crowd of gentlemen and ladies, overjoyed, shout the Japanese equivalent for Hear. Hear, Hear!' And when Ko-Ko an- nounces that the volunteer is Nanki-Poo, the throng shout, 'Long life to Nanki-Poo!” Katisha. an elderly Japanese lady, examines the coroner's cer- tificate. while the Mikado of Japan questions Pooh-Bah, Pitti- Sing, and Ko-Ko about the execu- tion of Nanki-Poo, the heir ap- parent to the throne of Japan. The achievement of many worthwhile projects such as the sale of pronto pups at Basketball games, the fixing of toys for needy children, and the participation in the Youth Fair kept the Bartow Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America very busy this year. The local chapter is governed by the same eight- fold purpose as the national organization. This, however, can be put very compactly into one main purpose—learning to live better today in order that our lives and those of our families may be better tomorrow. We were fortunate to have three of our Bartow FHA members as officers of the County Council. The officers are Susie Mettaver from Ft. Meade. Vice-President of Recreation; Mary Creel from Mulberry, Treasurer; and from Bartow: Gayle West, President; Pat Taylor, Vice- President; and Sue Collins, Secretary. 69 SPANISH CLUB First Row: Webster. Linda Clark performs diligently one of the many tasks which face the editor of a newspaper. Officers of the S Club are Jay Currier, President; Lex Taylor. Vice-President; Sharon Lang, Secretary; and Liz Phillips, Treasurer. S” CLUB The S Club is an organization which is composed of outstanding sports' par- ticipants who have earned letters. An annual S” club banquet is the main goal for which the members strive to earn money. Every girl who has earned a cheerleading, swimming, or tennis let- ter and every boy who has a major or two minor letters is eligible for membership into the S Club. But she needn't fear because administering the very latest first-aid techniques are Jean Mathews, Secretary; Judy Daniel, Vice-President; and Sharon Sullivan, Treasurer. The Future Nurses of Ameri- ca is an organization made up of those students who are in- terested either in nursing as a career or in the field of medi- cine in general. The club’s purpose is to fur- ther this profession through the use of outside speakers, films, and field-trips. Members of the FNA are as follows—Clockwise: Janice Davis, Vivian Parker, Judy Daniel, Sharon Sullivan, Fran Hunt, Lorchid Stanford. Kay Kitchens, Brucie Reese, Jean Mathews, Orene Vaughan, Marilyn Ellington, Donna Marley, Sylvia Cooper. 73 Our photographer, George Mann, has caught the spirit and the hard work that prevailed in the journalism room during the process of putting out the school yearbook. The ECHO. In the process of editing the book, probably three times as much goes into the trash can as Orene Vaughan, editor, will readily testify. The shot of Patton Hyman shows he has a foundation for the position as assistant editor. Business manager, Gary Martin, was caught in one of his more active moments, but if it wasn't for his wide-awake little assistant, Fran Hunt, then nothing would ever get done. You would never know it from look- ing at her, but Diane Tune was about to crack up from the amount of work she had to do. Our senior editor, Pan) Speight, really had to get down to the bottom of things to complete the all-important senior section. Big Don Alexander put his glib tongue to good use by extending his well-known line to include a pitch for the sale of the ECHO. Liz Phillips who had a wealth of inside informa- tion as feature editor is caught in a restful pose but ac- tually it is the pause before completing her feature duties and writing copy. Two heads are better than one; one belongs to Jay Currier and two belong to Blaine Fitch. The picture of this young miss, Jan Cox, demonstrates her versatility and good humor, whether her job is writing copy for the annual, or washing the dishes after the party. The staff owes her a vote of thanks for work done over and above the call of duty. Ann Brown was an ideal advertising manager and none could resist the charms of such an attractive line of sales . . . and all under the supervision of Miss Janet Todd, our sponsor. Each boy must maintain a C average in order to retain membership in the club. This club is directed by its officers and a board member select- ed from each class group. Some of the outstanding projects for this year were the mental health drive and the improvement of the basketball roster board. Money-making proj- ects included car washes, a theater, ticket sale, cotton candy sales at football games, and sponsoring the football program. Through service the Key Club works for the im- provement in the school and the community. 76 CLUB v . 77 Students in the B.H.S. band have really 'Got the beat when it comes to music. To be eligible for membership, a student must have earned a prescribed num- ber of dramatic points. This year the society earned money by selling snow cones to members of the stu- dent body after school and by sell- ing concessions at the track meets. Pictured at the left are the officers of the Thespians. Demonstrating their dramatic abilities, the officers stage an assassination of their president, Jan Cox. Performing the evil deed is the vice- president, Patton Hyman, and coming to the rescue is Robert Wind, secretary. Not pictured is the treasurer, Blaine Fitch.
