Silium COUNCIL ACTIVITIES After election of homeroom representatives, the Student Council began its complex job in September of 49. The group of 20 (including class presidents and its officers) planned and completed a number of activities and projects as well as maintained the coke machine, school store, and candy counter. Four full lengthmovies were presented raisers for the Council. A new piano was bought for the school auditorium after several projects and donations had raised the necessary funds. Assistance was given to the Yellow Jacket and many small problems were solved. A school handbook was made up and prepared for publication in time for the school year 1950-’51. The Annual Barn Frolic in the Spring was a tremendous success expanding this year to the tennis courts. Barn dancing was the main attraction although contests were popular in the “breathing spells . New officers were electedearly in May, as a year of bustling activity and great and far reaching accomplishment came to a close. 36 Jack Little Betty Jo White Wayne Whitehurst Joan Merritt Merry Anderson Luther Langdale Alice Sullivan Bill Brown George Lawrence Bob Fox Bobby Douglas Eugene Bass Franklin Peacock Bill Taylor NOT PICTURED Frank Smith Bill Norris Jack Hicks HONOR SOCIETY 1ST ROW: MilaAanoall, Ernestine Wiggins, Frieda Allen, Edward Stuart, Nancy Wilson, WAnita Wim- berly, John Menear, Frieda Wmitenek, Frances Carlton, Elean r Howell, Marjorie Pascmall. 2ND ROW: Pat Morgan, Beverly Collins, Ella May Redeearn, Ann H lt, Jimmie J. The Summerlin Institute Key Club, during the school year 1949-’50, was per- haps, the leading individual organization in promoting and performing service activi- ties at Bartow High School. Regardless of the fact that their activities have taken no trophies at the state convention, it was, nevertheless, a very active organization. Among the undertakings of the Kiwanis Sponsored organization, whose service value was most felt, was the acceptance of the project to sell ads for the football programs as has been done in preceding years. This not only benefitted the Barlow Athletic Association but proved a means of increasing the club’s treasury. As a service to our school, the Key C lub volunteers its co-operation financially in aiding the Biology class and Student Council in beautifying our school with plants, shrubs, etc. This project is typical of many instances when the Key Club has come to aid various organizations when our school is to receive benefit. As a club project, Bartow submitted the lowest bid for publication of the “Florida Key, the Key Club state monthly, which was accepted at the midwinter conference in Decembe r. The Bartow C lub has success- fully printed four issues of this paper and plans to resume publication next semester. This year for the first time in Bartow Key Club history, it has had one of the members elected a state officer. Alan T rack, secretary, was elected Lt. Governor of Division VII at the State Convention, thus putting Bartow on the map. Living up to the motto “We Build Too”, the Summerlin Key Club shall continue to render servicesto our .chool and commun- ity, asking no other reward than the reali- zation of job well done! florida KEY STALL Alan Trask, James Tucker (Editor), Bill Norris, Hillard Allen, Richaro Miller, NH. The Summerlin Glee Club has accomplished many things in the past year. At the first of the school term the club was represented at the State Vocal Clinic by eleven of the students. Following this the Glee Club presented the Christmas Cantata, The Messiah • On March 3, they gave a concert consisting of both chorus numbers and solos. One week following, 100 of the students went to the District Contest in Tampa. There they honored themselves by winning 9 out of 10 first divisions entitling them to enter in the State C ontest, April 28-29. April 21, a selected part of the club presented an operetta entitled, MThe Red Mill , The students entered into the State Contest on April 28, and they completed the year with an Alumni Concert. ’.mw — r benCE GC'GtR- LL°Y° JAMES STONE. 0 ( JT , nE BROWN. When the 1947-48 school year opened, we had 60 members enrolled; and we se- cured 30 registered calves and 5 registered hogs. We helped to organize and participate in the Polk County Youth Fair and showed the grand champion bull and cow in the dairy division of the Florida State Fair, in late 1948 we moved into the modern, well- constructed agriculture building, construc- ted on a 5 acre plot across from the high school. On the 5 acres of land we grew vegetables, citrus seedlings, and raised 1 500 frye rs. In the school year of 1948-49 we contin- ued all these activities, placing high in livestock and judging contests. Crowning it off, our judging team won second place in Florida State Fair, entitling them a free trip to Waterloo, Iowa, where the National Dairy Congress was held. Here the boys did well as you will see later on in the program. In 1949-50 there were over 100 students enrolled in Agriculture. Mr. R.B. O’Berry was employed by the County School Board to help Mr. Howell in the Agriculture De- partment. This year we planted 50,000 pine seedlings with a tree planter borrowed from the American Agricultural Chemical Corporation. We placed high again this year in livestock shows and judging contests; but we are most happy by our judging team taking first place at the Florida State Fair, which entitles them to a free trip to Kansas City, Missouri, to the National FFA Divi- sion and the American Royal Livestock Show. We also have a quartet which won third place in the State Contest, and we are hoping for the first place this year. 48 DIRECTOR band officers 50 Mr. T.
