Mr. G. Walls PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE It is the year two thousand and anything. You, a Barton per son in this book, have just finished your two-hour work day in your home information network centre. You are relaxing by your gasohol fireplace just before going out for six or seven hours of your favourite fitness, recreation and volunteer community service activity. As your eyes casually scan the bookshelves, they are arrested by ORACLE ' 83. You take it down and affectionately thumb the pages slowly, not reading, just reminiscing. Your mind easily wanders back. I remember ' 82- ' 83 so very well. That was the year dances almost ceased and the staff and students produced Grease . The Fashion Show was extraordinaire, and our athletic teams made our op- ponents beware. For scholarship it was a vintage year, and our community service was without peer. Then Miss Gilchrist had to call it quits, a happening she thought was the absolute pits. Yes, Barton really was a special school, because everyone owned the problems and participated in the solutions and everyone shared in the pride and joys of successes. That kind of caring and sharing most of us have carried beyond the school over the years into actions that planted new seeds of hope in people ' s hearts even in the face of discouraging unemployment, the very real threat of a nuclear holocaust, the depressing fact of hunger and disease, disasters and other unflattering human issues that were begging for solutions. It really did help to create in us the desire and determination to make our community and world a better people place. We ' ve made so much progress! I ' m really thankful for those Barton years. I appreciate the ORACLE staff for their great work every time I look at this book. I wonder when the Barton Blue Association will organize the next super reunion? Let me see - it was formed in ' 81 by Mr. Wismer and gradua tes. Their 30th will be the school ' s 50th. F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-CI The kids these days don ' t know what they ' re missing by not going to school with hundreds of other great kids. I still have my doubts about the home, computer-assisted, learner centre. Sincerely, .-t. ' ii iie G.E.Walls, Principal. Mr. P. Packer - Conductor The Teacher-Student Clash H i ' . ' Autumn Canoe Trip On a foggy, Thursday morning in early October, ten girls and fourteen boys left tfie school to begin Barton ' s fall canoe trip. Once on the water, the group split into two brigades. The girls, with Mrs. Jazvac and Mr. McCallum, went in one direction while the boys, with Mr. Johnson and Mr. Monteith, went in another. A good canoe trip in one of th e most beautiful parts of the world, Algonquin Park, will leave you with memories which will last a lifetime: two racoons inside your tent; brilliant fall colours reflected in a still lake; the smell of bacon and woodsmoke as you crawl out of your tent on a crisp October morning; nearly losing Mrs. Jazvac in the mud swamp at Vanishing Pond; Debbie Morrison ' s wonderful laugh, funny stories around the campfire under a sky full of stars and Tracey Trout diving into the icy waters to retrieve a paddle blade. Everyone brings back his own special memories from a canoe trip. Come with us on our next voyage and see what we mean! My lines are in here somewhere. IN RETROSPECT Barton ' s first musical was an overwhelming success as it played to packed houses through four shows. It is no exaggeration to say that Grease was a total school effort which involved the talents of the administration, staff, students, office and custodial people. Our only regret is that one yearbook is too limited to picture everyone who con- tributed to our success. Special mention must be made, however, of the hard-working, most times patient, dedicated people who led the way, but did not appear on stage to receive a much deserved round of applause; THE DIRECTORS - Sandra Katz, John Packer Steven Gal THE PRODUCERS - Wendy Cole, Barbara Jenkins THE LIGHTS - Ronald Schweitzer Pro PRO TRANSMISSION George Naylor, President 593 Concession St. Hamilton, L8V 1B4 389-2238 FAST- RELIABLE- PROFESSIONAL Best Wishes to Graduates JJ-UJ-J, J a Saketi asticce ' iia Utali lana SPECIALIZING IN: CAKES PASTRIES FOR WEDDINGS, BAPTISMS, BIRTHDAYS — BOMBONIERE FOR ALL OCCASIONS— 1120 FENNELL AVENUE at OTTAWA, HAMILTON, ONT. prop: CARMELO GRECO Phone: 383-3667 H FILLED OPTICAL SUPPLIES GLASSES FITTED REPAIRS riNsiNO opncN 5DB MAIN STREET EAST AT WENTWORTH HAMILTON, ONTARIO 528-2771 Everything you ' re looking for...food, fashion and fun, plus informative news coverage everyday. That person was, and stilTis, Lois Giles, a Barton graduate of 1982. What ' s this Lois Giles doing with the yearbook editor? Well, it ' s actually unfair to call me editor because that prestigious position was really shared between the two of us. She rah through an overwhelming amount of work. Had she not been there, we would have had a slim yearbook indeed! Therefore, I would like to extend a very special thank you to a very special person. Of course, every body needs a backbone and the backbone of the yearbook was our staff advisor, Wendy Cole, who dedicated her time and work above and beyond the call of duty . Along with feeding, and putting up with us, she created and suffered through many of the masterpiece pages you have seen. Thank you. We couldn ' t have done it without you. Final thanks are due to people who should not, and will not, be forgotten. To say the year has been dull would be to forget the contributions of Barb Little and Dineen Baran who, along with their excellent work in their first yearbook year, kept the vitally needed laughter and cfaziness going. Included in this list of those who lent immeasurable help and dedication are Duncan Ritchie, Myrna Bradshaw, Tammy Mouriopoulos; and Jany Piasky who at different times of the year contributed their genuine working skills. . It has been a great year! One last word of appreciation goes out to all of Barton Secondary. Thanks for the memories of 1982 83. 1 hbpe they last; Published by Josten ' s National School Services Ltd. Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
