THE SPOKE BARTON COUNTY COMMUNITY JUNIOR COLLEGE VOLUME I 1970 This is the dawning of the age . . . for the people involved with the Barton County Community Col lege. Students discovered new and broader horizons on the ultra¬ modern, expanding campus, where they found social activities and educational opportunities waiting for them. Nearly all aspects of college life were available to the students; organizations and activities at the college were many and varied. X A dream becomes reality The expanding campus of Barton County Community Junior College is located at Bissell Point, overlooking the Arkansas River Valley. It is the realization of the dream of the residents of Barton County who voted to establish the com¬ munity Junior College early in 1965. The library, the science-math hall, and the applied science hall were the first three buildings constructed on campus. The groundbreaking ceremony, which began the official construction of for Barton County the Junior Col lege, was held November 21, 1967, with Frank Carlson, former Kansas Senator, officiating. The landscaping, architecture, and curriculum of the Barton Col lege were formed with the help of top junior col¬ lege consultants throughout the nation. Therefore, the very latest in eguipment is featured at the Junior College. Closed-circuit television, a study- ski I Is center, tapes, films, and video¬ tapes, are all available for student 4 (l) College President C. 0. On March 19, 1969, the Board of Trus¬ tees of Barton County Community Junior College held its first meeting on cam¬ pus in the lobby of the Applied Science building. The first phase of construc¬ tion of the col lege was then complete. The second phase of construction on the fine arts, physical education, class¬ room, and administration buildings other structures appear would be the next step toward the com¬ pletion of the Barton College. It was -begun in the Fall of 1969, in order to be completed by the Fall term of 1970. By July 31, 1969, the enrollment at Barton County Community Junior Col lege had already reached the five hundred mark, twice as many as had been antici¬ pated. Though the constitution was foremost in their plans, the Senate also accom¬ plished many useful projects. The ac¬ quisition of a flagpole, the sponsoring of dances and other recreational activ¬ ities, an Inaugural Ball, and the host¬ ing of the State Junior College Meeting, are just a few of the first-year accom¬ plishments of the Student Senate. President: Vice-President: Secretary: Treasurer: David Sauer Bill Coe Marlene Wendel Duane Lanterman Sigma Phi Omega: First campus fraternity A very active campus organization is the thirteen-member Sigma Phi Omega, the local chapter of Lambda Alpha Epsilon na¬ tional law enforcement fraternity. This group was organized in November of 1969 with the purpose of advancing the pro¬ fessional administration of criminal justice. It tries to promote better public understanding of the administration of criminal justice, to foster through fraternal contact greater understanding between agencies and departments in criminal justice fields, and to elevate the standards of personnel, training, procedure, and ideals in areas of ad¬ ministration of criminal justice. The fraternity sponsors a black belt karate course for criminal justice ma¬ jors or minors, a firing range and an FBI firing course, and a dog testing program for the U.S. Air Force ' s sentry dog training course. Karate skills practiced by justice students 4 6 A black belt karate course, sponsor¬ ed by the college chapter of Lambda Ep¬ silon, is offered to any student who is a member of the fraternity and is ma¬ joring or minoring in criminal justice. The purpose of learning karate is to build confidence in future police offi¬ cers and to develop the self-discipline that is so important to a police offi¬ cer, according to Professor of Criminal Justice, Dennis C. Elam, himself a mem¬ ber of the class. The class is taught by a criminal justice student in the evening divi¬ sion, Dwight Boese of Claflin. ESoese, who holds a first degree black belt, taught junior high school in Claflin during the 1969-70 school year. Membership in the class, which meets from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Satur¬ days, dropped from 18, initially, to only eight as the SPOKE went to press. (4) Professor Dennis Elam, Ed Catlin, Ron Blasi, Bill Sowles, Lane Moore, and Mel Boyd concentrate in their karate skills. (5) Instruc¬ tor of karate, Dwight Boese demonstrates some of the actions. (6) Boese (1) and Carl Meadows, both first degree black belt holders, show a few of the finer points to the class. Students police campus The campus patrol is a group of four criminal justice students whose respons¬ ibility it is to maintain the security of the campus grounds, equipment, and personnel. Organized in September 1969, and approved by the Board of Trustees, the student patrolmen take the place of the more usual night watchmen. Besides providing for campus security, the program provides practical, on-the- job experience for criminal justice students. They are on duty from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from midnight to 7:00 a.m. week nights and twenty-four hours Saturday and Sunday. The campus patrol has trained Eirik, the German shepherd sentry dog, and use him part-time on night patrol, after the campus has been cleared of evening divi¬ sion students and staff. (l) Security Patrol off icer Ed Catlin checks the rooms as part of his duties. (2) Trainer Bill Sowles speaks to Eirik during a training session. Dowell publishes CAMPUS DAILY The supplement to the INTERROBANG, the CAMPUS DAILY, began its publication on Monday, April 13, 1970. Peggy Dowell, BCCJC student from Haviland, compiles and edits the news bulletin. It is a one-page paper, which comes out every morning ' . Contained in it is current school and local news, as well as the day ' s highlights from local, state, national, and international news. Barton Players prove their talents The first club to be organized on cam¬ pus was the Barton College Players, in October of 1969, with about 50 members. To carry out their purpose of providing opportunities for students to participate in theatrical productions and to provide opportunities for the public to enjoy and appreciate theatre, they produced three plays in their first year. The first production was the child¬ ren ' s theatre project of The Wizard of Oz in December, followed in February by an old fashioned melodrama, Dirty Work at the Crossroads, or Tempted, Tried, and True. The final production of the year was the all-school drama project David and Lisa in ApriI. (6) One of the children ' s favorite characters was the Scarecrow. 5 INTERROBANG: The student’s own The INTERROBANG, student newspaper of BCCJC, began publication October 16, 1969. Following basically an eight-page format, the paper is published every two weeks, excepting vacations, on Thursdays. The newspaper, printed entirely on campus in the school print shop, attempts to provide the news of the col lege to the students and supporters of the school, as well as an assortment of editorials, col¬ umns, and features, including plentiful pictorial coverage of campus activities. Under the direction of the first managing editor, Sandra Lynn Corbitt, the INTERRO¬ BANG developed during the course of the year into an intregal part of college I i fe. The name, INTERROBANG, comes from a punctuation mark which is a combination of a question mark (interro) and an ex¬ clamation point ( bang in printer ' s jar¬ gon). It is meant to symbolize the news function of a newspaper through the ex¬ clamation point, and the questioning, in¬ vestigative function through the question mark. (l) Sports Editor Steve Belt confers with his adviser, David Karr, about an article in the local paper. (2) Mark Loughrige, a reporter, writes his next story. (3) Cecil Ellis, col¬ umnist, prepares As Cecil Sees It for the next issue. (it) Busi ness Manager Sharon Nicolet tries to balance the books. (5) Nancy Lindholm, News Editor, spends some time in the print shop. First yearbook: A study in frustration Even though an original decision had been made not to pub Iish a yearbook the .first year of the college ' s existence, a staff was selected to begin planning for the first book. When, in late October, the original decision was reversed, the staff changed its plans and began work on a publication to record the story of the beginning of a college. Under the direction of managing editor Lee Barlow and copy editor Celeste Pros¬ ser, the book began to take shape, with the thought that it, like the student newspaper, would be printed in the school print shop. However, pressure on the shop for production of a catalogue as well as the normal printing load of necessary school materials forced a- nother change With an early April deadline facing them, the staff put together pictures and stories to commemorate the histor¬ ical first year of the Bissell Point campus. Other students aiding in the publication were Debby Schonhoff and Joan Ochs. (6) Art Editor Joan Ochs designs the first SPOKE cover. (7) Yearbook Copy Editor Celeste Prosser checks facts before she writes her copy. (8) SPOKE Editor Lee Barlow works on a final layout to be sent to the printer. Cheerleaders stir student emotions Helping to boost our Cougar Pride was the lively squad of eight cheer¬ leaders. The cheerleaders were sel¬ ected by members of the faculty and the Student Senate in October. Those qual¬ ifying were Joan and Jan Weiser, Brenda Williams, Barbara Knobloch, Al Petz, Mark Hauser, Roger Switzer, and Kent Sallee. Alternates were Becky Miller, Nancy Lindholm, and Mary Lou Linenber- ger. (l) The crowd charges from the bleachers after a victory. (2) The cheerleaders perform during a break in the game. Cougar Cagers show their colors The twelve members of the first Bar¬ ton County Community Junior College Bas¬ ketball team concluded the 1969-70 sea¬ son with an overall record of nine wins and nineteen losses, and a three win- eleven loss record in the Kansas Jay- hawk Junior College Conference. The Cougar roundballers, coached by energe¬ tic Dick Nagy and Assistant Coach Jack Bowman, made a fine showing in their first year of play. The sixteen member group possessed a few outstanding trackmen. Jack Bowman coached and encouraged the track team, as well as the cross-coun¬ try team. Though our track and cross¬ country teams failed to break any rec¬ ords, they made a fine showing for the first year of competition at Barton County Community Junior College. i (l) Coach Jack Bowman gives instructions at the Cross-country meet. Math and Computers: Problem solvers With a wide background in Math becom- ing more and more necessary in modern education, Barton County Community Jun¬ ior Col lege found it necessary to set up a large variety of Math courses to be available to the students. This selec¬ tion of Math courses was also necessary for the computer programming curriculum. The study of computers was also a major program at the new Barton Col lege.
