J Class History The Northern section of Vermont, historically and geographically, lays outside the great colonial settlements and was often the raiding route for war parties, To the North lay the French colonies while to the South were the great English colonies, In between was the vast wooded area that nobody really claimed and was open to settle- ment from both directions. The English settlers to the South gradually ekpanded North and Westward untiluabout 150 years after the landing of the Pilgrims there was a sparse settlement in Barton, In 1781, ten years before Vermont became a state, Barton was granted a charter as a township, In 1795, settlers arrived, Asa Kimbill and james May and their families moved in. Later' others came, including Joseph and Daniel Owen. The town was officially organized on March 2.8, 1798, 1 E The first school was established in 1801, Barton Academy was organized in 1854 the academy and grade school in 1866, The first graduating class was in 1897 and now 57 graduating classes later, we see the 1953 Class. Let's trace the history of this class In the fall of the year 1949. thirty of us from St. Pau1's Lakeview, Fisk, and West Glover joined with Barton Acadenfiy students to make up the Freshman class, In our D midst we find Pat May and David Owen, descendants of the first settlercs. At our first class meeting we elected the following officers: President: Pat May, Secretary: Cynthia Emerson, and Treasurer: Bryce Elliott, Mr, Charles johnson, our class sponsor, helped us through our trials and tribulations, ' The next year took us further up the ladder to greater knowledge, Now it was our turn to sponsor the Freshman Reception, Officers this year were: President: David Owen, Secretary: Pat May, and Treasurer: Paul Lemay, New faculty members were: Mr, Keith, who taught math and science and Mr, Parsons, who is still teaching commer- cial subjects here, This year some of the 'members were honored to be able to go to the Newport Music Festival and the State Speech Festival, During our Junior year the class officers were: President: Bryce Elliott, Secretary Helen Chicoine, and Treasurer: Richard Roberts, Mrs, Moriarty was our class sponsor for the year, Class rings were received in May amid much excitement, Also in May we sponsored the junior Prom, It was a great success, the attendance was the largest it has been for several years, The gym was delightfully decorated in a spring scene, Many members of the class took part in plays, and the Vermont and Newport Music Festivals, At last we reached the pinnacle of success for now we are Seniors, Our class officers are the same as last year, except for President which is George Paquette, This year it is our privilege to have study hall as our home room and to sit in the last three rows during study periods, We sponsored the annual Christmas Ball with the usual attendance, The gym was nicely decorated with lighted Christmas trees, Several members of the class have participated in athletics, We have had our share of play parts and concert assignments, Ahead lies graduation into life, May we always be honorable representatives of Barton Academy, Class Prophecy Popular magazines are presenting the typical famlry of the month and the career girl of the day, so we have decided to feature this typical graduating class of the year This class had thirteen members, seven girls and six boys, These pupils came from average farm and town homes, Some of them were active in sports, others in music, All in all, they spent a happy four years at Barton Academy, We know about their activities in school but now that five years have passed, let's see what the members of the typical class are doing in the work-a-day world, Helen Grondin is really headed for the big time, She's now an artist and has her own studios on Fifth Avenue, Keep up the brushwork and you'll soon be a master- painter, Caston Corliss seems to be getting along fine in the Air Force, He still has a year more to serve and we've heard rumors that he plans on signing up for another four years, Is it true, Cass? Helen Chicoine has been attending a music school for the past four years and is now a well-known music director at the University of Vermont, Don't let music take all of your time, Miss Music, Bryce Elliott is now raising jersey cows on his own 500 acre farm in West'Glover, Must be that training at Vermont State Agriculture School in Randolph was a big help to Bryce, Patricia May is now the great Doc May at the Clinic in St, johnsbury, How are things at the hospital, Pat? David Owen is still working on his father's farm, Has Uncle Sam sent you a letter yet, Dave ? joyce Brooks, after completing four years at johnson Teachers College, is now teaching the fifth grade in Barton Academy, Richard Roberts, like Dave, is helping his father on the farm, We heard that he's saving money all the time toward a farm of his own, Good Luck, Dick, Joyce Perron has a good position in a television factory in Connecticut, We hear that she plans' to open a special TV Radio Shop very soon, Guess you'll know all about loose wires now, won't you? George Paquette is now running his own grocery store, We hear that he is still considering rnarriage but hates to take the fatal step, What's'the answer,,Georgie boy? Barbara Sicard got married soon after graduation and is now living with Raymond on his farm in Westmore, How's the family, Barb? Ronald Ashe joined the US Navy just after graduation and is now taking officer's training, Is this to be your career, Ronnie? Lorraine Wilson is driving for a big bus company in western New York state, Now we know why you practiced by driving that Ford full of school kids so much, We have told you of the whereabouts of the members of the Class of 1953 of Barton Academy, Each one has gone out into the world to practice a useful occupation, This is in keeping with the American tradition, Truly, the Class of '53 was a typical American graduating class. Class Gifts Graduation is the time when graduates get gifts from their parents and friends, We have decided to give ourselves gifts that will be useful in our future life, To Ronald Ashe, we give this admirals rating in the U,S, Navy, Ronny, you're at the top before you start, ' To Joyce Brooks, we give some typing paper, Good luck in your future work, Joyce, To Helen Chicoine, we give this piano, You can continue your good work forever, Helen, To Caston Corliss, we give this mechanics kit, Now, Cass, you can fix things even better than you could before, To Bryce Elliott, we give this jersey heifer, so he can keep up his good work in the 4-H Club, To Helen Grondin, we give this az-tist's paint brush, There is no reason why you can't continue with your good art work, Helen, ' To Patricia May, we give these pills, so she can give them to some of her patients- but-make sure you give them to the right people, Doc, To David, Owen, we give this horn, Now David you won't have to use the school's horn any more, To George Paquette, we give this store, You can go into business as soon as you graduate George, To Joyce Perron, we give this noise maker, Now Joyce, we will know that you are around, To Richard Roberts, we give this beautiful blonde, model, You won't have to look around any more, Romeo, To Barbara Sicard, we give this wedding ring, We hear you will be needing it soon, Barb, To Lorraine Wilson, we give this deluxe Chevrolet fgreenj, Now, Lorraine, you won't have to drive someone e1se's, Presented by David Owen Bryce Elliott Joyce Perron Class Will Since we have become mindful of the shortness of this life and are aware of the toll the past four years have taken, we are resolved to publish this last will and testament. BARBARA SICARD wills an imitation of her diamond to all unfortunate girls who haven't caught their man yet, JOYCE BROOKS wills her Horsey to Jane Lewis, Now Janey, you will have a place to anchor that horse tail, HELEN CHICOINE wills her love for music to some of the Freshman boys who seem to lack appreciation for song, PATRICIA MAY wills her ability to get straight A's to anybody who thinks he needs it, HELEN GRONDIN wills her artistic talent to Dorothy Clark, From now on all the art work is your responsibility, Lou, . LORRAINE WILSON wills her job as school bus driver to her sister, Barbara, The pleasure is all yours, RONALD ASHE wills his ability to do well in shop to the Freshman boys, who will be able to put it in good use, BRYCE ELLIOTT wills his dimples to anyone who wants them, Here's everyones chance for a pleasanter smile, DAVID OWEN wills his tuba to Lance Smith, It'll take plenty of wind, but a rugged fellow like you should have no trouble, RICHARD ROBERTS wills his talent for enjoying himself to any of the sad sacks who think school is a serious business, JOYCE PERRON wills her ability to get along with people to any under classmen who enjoy peace, CASTON CORLISS wills his build to Freddy May, Now, Fred, you'll have some weight to throw around on the basketball court, GEORGE PAQUETTE wills his height to the JV boys, Now, you're sure to go places in basketball, . Now that we have given away our best qualities, we must inform you that we are not in very strong physical and mental condition, In case this will is contested, you will probably not lose much if your inheritance is denied, We are sure that it will not be however, With this reassurance, we sign and seal this, our last will and testament, The Class of 1953 l i rst Row: 1 4 w . bcmors Mrs, lwloriariv, llelen Cliicmine, David Oven, George llmgneliv, Richard Roln-rts, and lxlrk Mar lienzie, Hvvurid Ron: Kloyce l'c-rrun, lhirbara Sivard, Ronald Aslxe, llafricia Ivlay, Cfxslun Curlis, Lorraine Wilson, Psryrv lfllioil, and Helen Gronrlin, Alasenffluycs- Hrmulxs, v - i.: - If - -U-'A 4: -Q lfirsf Rowg Se Cond Huw: Inst Rnw: Junior Class Mrs, blindrin, llevffrly l arocque, Allisonhjenne, Carolyn Wo mdardy Fred llarlcm Doris Rollins, jean llendy, Beverly Pudvah, Patricia Paquelte, joan Pickel, Hubert Simons, Pauline Pmickfurd, Richard Lalxiadeleine, Grave Thornton, Robert Kimball, Hazen Ward, Andre Cloutier, Leo Imudvali, h 1 liilllllllllll I llllllllllllll I llllllllllllll 5 ,L i,.N..W,...,,.,m,.,.-,.r,,,l J, .. .,., , w L W -ni First Row: Second Row: First Row: Second Row: Last Row: Sophomore Picture Mr. Lawrence, Marlee Rives, Doreen Simons, Leo Chapdeluine, Ronald Cloutier, Louise Ticehurst, Dorothy Clark, Barbara Wilson, Preston Kxttreoge, David bicard, Neil Young, Reginald Stevens, Clayton Collins, Robert Owen, Dale Hanson, t . ,,.,, f-..f'.-W , ,S ,Y lillllllllllllll llllllllllllll I llllllllllllllif D ,M ,D , .,,, , l.., .. ..
