Bartlett Yanoyy High School Yancevville, North (Jarolina HELPING WITH THE Helping student’s find the answers is one of the most important things a teacher does In his or her career. However, students do not only need answers in the classroom. Many students seek help outside of the regular class time. The 1985-86 YAN-TAT Is dedicated to a teacher who will go out of his way to help a student. This teacher, as supervisor of the bus drivers, indirectly helps practically every student at B.Y. Standing outside the school every morning with his clipboard, he is a familiar sight to most bus riders. In appreciation for his loyalty and dedication to the staff and students at Bartlett Yancey Senior High, the yearbook staff is proud to dedicate the 1985-86 YAN-TAT to Mr. Bedford Jackson Page. ANSWERS 2 DIPLOMA PURSUIT B.Y. Edition — Notes On Play High school, or any place of learning, is an educational process. This process takes many forms: classroom Instructions, reading, sharing ideas with friends — even cruising Riverside Drive is an educational experience. The purpose of education is to increase ones knowledge of the world around him. One of the popular games of the decade is “Trivial Pursuit,” in which people show how much they know. While (hopeMly) all of what a student learns throughout his high school career is not “Trivial,” high school and the game are much alike. They are alike in that both pose many questions that must be answered in order to win, and both have players (students) competing to reach the “Inner Circle” (graduation). This year’s YAN-TAT theme is based on “Trivial Pursuit.” In this case, however, a more apt expression might be “Diploma Pursuit.” Throughout the book there will be pictures of “Trivia” cards with questions. The answers to the questions can be found in the book. Our thanks go to Horn Abbot Ltd. of Canada for their permission to uses the “Trivial Pursuit” trademark. OPENING SENIORS FACULTY JUNIORS CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS SOPHOMORES SPORTS FRESHMEN CONCLUSION ADS, INDEX, AND GROUP PICTURES THE END OF ANOTHER YEAR Prom and Graduation — Summer Pun Begins Prom night B.Y. students swirl around the dance floor experiencing “One more night” of revelry. Graduation night ’85 reminds graduates, Pam Crumpton and Kathy Combs, of the value of their friendship. Neal Bean eagerly awaits his diploma on graduation day. 4 Tony and Ray Gibson and Dennis English enjoy rented bikes at Daytona Beach. Up close and personal with Tracy Webster at Myrtle Beach. 5 PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT Band members and Football players try hard. Vincent Wilson, Derrick Harris, and Roy Blackwell don’t seem very pleased with Carl Blackwell’s direc- tion. The Varsity Football coaches look on as their team gets loose. 6 THE YEAR Home boys talk it over at lunch. David Dali asks Santa (Mac McDowell) for less homework for Christmas. Basketball practice Isn’t all work for team members Beth Thompson and Rhonda Briggs. 8 IN REVIEW In order to get the good education that is needed to survive in this highly competitive world today, there must be a great deal of studying and book work involved in a school year. That is why students like lunch, break, and clubs. These activities let the students relieve the tension that all the book work causes. They can horse around, talk with friends, and help with club organiza- tions. As the old saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Beth Crichton thinks a break is needed after prom decora- tion. Tammy Lea and Treva Foster demonstrate that friendship means having a shoulder to lean on during band practice. 9 During lunch (from left to right) Jim Yarbrough, Bruce Paschal, Kenneth Brooks, Mark Baize, David McCann, Curtis Roberts, and Eric Hooks dicuss the American Medical Association’s latest report on smoking. Patricia Southern and Onassls Stewart finally seem to have found the right comblna- tions to the lockers on first hall. 10 Julie Workman seems amused as Jerry Potter helps Erik Page remove a metal pole from his body. William Vernon, Coleman Wilson, and Jamie Hamlett at lunch. Are they throwing it in the trash can ... or taking it out? y Robin Yates instructs Suzanne Soloman and Meredith Page in the fine art of sorting fruit for FPA. Shawn Graves and Barry Williams look on as Anthony Hunt and David Stone wash their troubles away with ... milk? Tony Gibson and Dennis English pose for their prom pictures. 11 FADS AND Jon Griffin brings the new military styles to B.Y. as a transfer from a military school in 1985. Decorated lockers seem to be a coming fad to many students at B.Y. 12 Pierced ears were the “in” thing, even among marry of the guys in 1985. FASHIONS Nike’s Air Jordan leaiher sneakers were among the most popular high top leather sneak- ers worn at B.Y. in 1985-86. Fashionable Tarrence Graves models for the YAN- Having flowers or balloons delivered to friends or sweethearts at school TAT. became the “in” way to show affection. 13 t OUTSTANDING STUDENTS RECOGNIZED IN SPRING Ouislanding Academic Achlevemeni by BYHS students was recognized during the Academic Awards Ceremony at the high school on May 2Q in the spring of 1985. The members are treated to encounters with Spanish culture and foods, as well as meeting Spanish-speaking people. The club’s 101 members must meet the requirement of having taken at least one year of Spanish. The Spanish club leadership during 1985-86 was provided by Slomara “The Big B” Balmorland E vangellna “The Little B” Balmorl. Officers for theyear were Beth Crichton, president; Eric Hooks, vice president; Kim Stephens, secretary, and Wendy Tate, treasurer. The Spanish Club went on several trips during the school year. The club planned a trip to New York in June of 1986. Members also attended two competitions, one in Lexington and one in Winston-Salem. In these competitions, students are pitted against those from other schools In selected specialty areas of the Spanish language. Amy Vernon won first place in conversation fluency at Lexington, while Robin “Rocky” Williamson took first In poetry recitation at Lexington. In addition, the club sent Christmas cards to military stations overseas and to faraway stations in the United States. The club received replies from such places as Japan, Korea, Germany, the Mediterranean and California. In order to sponsor these activities, the club sold candy at school. 65 66 Lisa Fuquay focuses in on a subject. PUTTING LIFE IN FOCUS Photo club enrollment grows The Bartlett Yancey Photography Club was established in 1981 and has become one of the more popular clubs at B.Y. It consists of 48 students who want to learn more about photography above the snapsnot level. Professional photographers lecture and demonstrate techniques to help with club projects. Officers for85-86were Jerald Wray, president; Julie Wright, program chairman; Revonda Shuford, vice president; and Bruce Jeffries, treasurer. Sponsorship was continued by Susan Lassiter and Bill Bush, with assistance from Debby Clayton. The year’s club activities Included a trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art, which gave students a chance to see some of the very first photographs ever taken, as well as a sampling of the work of such masters as Edward Stelchen and Ansel Adams. The club also took first place in the Homecoming Parade Float Contest. 67 Photography club officers are, from left to right: Bruce Jeffries, Janice Simmons, Julie Wright, and Revonda Shuford. “ENGINEERING A GOOD YEAR” “Jets plan Florida trip” The Paper Airplane Contest is one of Candace Cooper confers with a the more popular of the contests sales representative on the sponsored by the JETS. methods of raising money for the club. paper TET5 airplane contest NOV. 2D DURING CLUB PERIOD rnB DETAILS SEE MR5. As In the past, Jets sponsors were Marcia Dalton, Candace Cooper, and Bill Holloman. JETS planned two trips for the 85-86 calendar, a Florida tour and attendance at the N.C. State University Open House. The Open House Exhibition in Raleigh gave JETS opportunities to tour the N.C. State campus, talk with school officials, and compete In statewide competitions. Competitions included Quiz Bowl teams, paper airplane contests, mousetrap car races, paper tower contests, egg drop contests, and public speaklng debate contests. To finance their excursions, JETS sold candy, T-shirts, Christmas decorations, scented candles, and Easter decorations. 69 HONORING EXCELLENCE Beta club enjoys another successful year. Vice President Mary Beth Sartln, Treasurer Caroline Mills, and Secretary Phillip Thompson discuss plans for the North Carolina Beta Convention. The Bartlett, Yancey Beta Club was one of the most enduring organizations at B.Y. The club recognized those students who have maintained high academic averages. Although the requirements for the Beta club are high, the club had 63 members in the 1985-86 school year making it one of the larger clubs. The Beta Club’s advisor for the year was once again Evangelina Balmori, who succeeded Weldon Slayton, Larxy Patterson, and Billy Loflin. Amy Vernon, a candidate for N.C. State Vice President, was local Beta president, while Mary Beth Sartin was vice president, with Phillip Thompson, secretary, and Caroline Mills, treasurer. The Beta Club had strict and demanding requirements which had to be met and maintained for membership. Sophomores had to have at least a 94 average, Juniors a 92, and Seniors a 91. The decreasing order of requirements was in recognition of the difficulty of maintaining a high average over a long period of time. The club stresses its members’ character and leadership ability, which is represented by the Beta motto, “Let us lead by serving others.” The B.Y. Beta Club sponsored many activities throughout the year. Club members attended the State Convention in March 1985. The club also sponsored a formal dm ner for its senior members and its new members, a group better known as “Baby Betas.” The club also sent Christmas cards to military stations overseas and in the U.S. The Beta Club is involved in many fund-raisers. These include selling candy and stationery to finance projects. One of the activities financed by these sales is the Beta Scholarship, which was awarded to an outstanding Beta student. 70 President Amy Vernon discusses ideas for upcoming meetings with sponsor E. With the sponsorshlpofJ.C. Winstead, the Auto Body and Fender group kept up its tradition of excellence in state and national competitions, while the Carpentry club worked to begin a winning club under the direction of Joe Hammock. Both organizations tried to provide opportunities for success to their members who learn the vocational skills which will help them in their careers In the industrial arts. VICA-Auto Body and Fender was again one of the best clubs in the state in 1985-86. In the state competitions in April of 85 they placed first In auto body repair, first In prepared speech, and were named as the outstanding club In the state. During the year the club prepared for the competitions by attending conferences and workshops in Phoenix, Arizona and Laurlnburg, N.C. Local member, Teresa Winstead also served as a state officer during the year. The club enjoyed their success but began looking to the future for new challenges In 86-87. While state and local competitions were the focus of one VICA chapter, the VICA carpentiy club was deeply involved In local construction projects. In addition to conducting several fundraising projects, which Included a raffle and a donut sale, the club devoted countless hours to the construction of the new green house for the horticulture classes, completion of the stadium press box, building a dressing room forMrs. Brandon, and erecting a petition to make classroom space. If they can find the time in their busy schedule, they hope to become Involved in district and state activities in the coming years. The VICA-Carpentry seems ready for real progress. Bartlett Yancey’s F.FA chapter proved again In 1986 that it was one of the most active clubs on campus as well as one of the most successful F.FA. groups In the state. Under the sponsorship of Cy Vernon and Sam Jackson, the local club attended state and national conventions where they participated in several contests and activities. The chapter produced two state champions who participated in national competitions in Oklahoma City as well as five second place state winners. Several of the local members also attended the national convention in Kansas City. Erik Page vice president of the chapter was selected to play with the national FFA band. Mike Burchell was one of the North Carolina delegates to visit the President at the White House in Washington. In addition to its many state and national activities, the FFA chose to renovate the old Caswell County jail for a historical landmark as their major project. The approximately $9000 project took much of the year to complete and involved most of the chapters’ members. Many hours were spent alter school on the extensive restoration. Much of the other time of the members was spent in fruit, candy, and plant sales to raise funds for the various trips and projects. To be a member of the FFA meant working hard in 1986 to produce another “bumper crop” of activities. 77 Two FFA members work on Jail renovation. A SONG FOR ALL OCCASSIONS Chorus sings for grades and not supper Mr. Wells uekles the Ivories for the chorus to sing along with. The Bartlett, Yancey chorus spent much of the school year trying to raise the funds to purchase audio-visual equipment for the music department. Under the direction of Mr. William Wells, the choral department included Chorus I, open by audition to first time students, Chorus II, open to qualified students who had been in Chorus I, and the Show Choir, which was composed of 15 students selected for special performances. The performance year included a Christmas concert presented by all of the groups individually and together. The spring concert on May 15 con- sisted of a formal concert by all the choirs and a “star search” second half that included individual acts in a variety show format. The drama depart- ment participated with the chorus in this part of the program. One of the highlights of the year was the participation of 15 students with the National Opera company’s production of The Merry Wives of Windsor on April 3rd. Working with professional singers in a real stage performance was a special experience for the students. This opportunity and a successful spring concert were the culminations of another active year for the choral department. On October 29 a delegation attended the state leadership workshop where local members learned some of the skills required to serve in leadership positions. During the year the local teams and In- dividuals prepared for the district and state proficiency events which were held on April 9 and 10. As well as district and state events, the chapter organized a pizza party on November 7 for the membership and hosted the annual FHA banquet on March 13. FHA week was observed dur- ing the week of February 9 as members worked to inform the school of their goals and activities. The 75 members, under sponsors Irma Miller, Harriet Brandon, and Betty Satterfield, worked hard to make 1986 the best year ever. The present band, founded in 1978, has become immensely popular at B.Y., and had 130 members in the 1985-86 academic year. The band was ably organized by Directors Ron Amos and Dock Sawyer. The band officers for the year were Amy Vernon, president, and Michelle Paschal, vice-president. Robin Pleasant and Evelyn McLaughlin were band secretaries, while Robin “The Hitman” Williamson and Mary Beth Sartln were the drum majors. The school year started a little early for the band, with practice beginning in August. Additionally, members were required to attend practices after school twice a week until November. Bartlett Yancey band members performed at several concerts, parades, and competitions during the school year. These included Christmas and Spring concerts. The band also marched in the homecoming parade, as well as in a parade competition in Mt. Aliy on November 23. In this contest, our band blew away the competition in almost every category. In June 1985 the band attended Myrtle Beach’s Sun Pun Festival and took second place, despite temperatures above 100 degrees. The band planned a repeat visit to the annual Washington, D.C. Cherry Blossom Festival in April 1986, hoping to better their fourth-place finish of 1983. The Pep Band, composed of volunteers, played at B.Y. Buccaneer basketball games. It Is a long and uneasy trip to the Varsity Band. The members started band in the seventh grade. In the eighth grade, under the direction of Dock Sawyer, band members got their first taste of actual concerts and competitions. After these beginning years, most members went to the J.V. Band in the ninth year, moving up to Varsity Band in the tenth grade. But a few exceptional students were allowed to go directly to the Varsity Band. The Varsity Band sponsored several fundraisers throughout the 85-86 season, including a car raffle. The band members sold tickets at $100 each for a new Chevrolet Cavalier, which was won by Faiger Blackwell. The band also sold pizzas and fruit in order to raise money for attending competitions. Fulfilling the Interests of others. Under the supervision of Mr. Weldon Slayton and Mr. Bill Bush, the school newspaper. The Treasure Chest, and the school yearbook, The Yan-Tat, were successfully produced. The Treasure Chest had 12 members and the Yan-Tat had 11 members. Both the yearbook and newspaper worked hard to fulfill the interests of the students at Bartlett Yancey. Goals this year for the newspaper and the yearbook staff consisted of teaching the students the 1 -2-3’s of Journalism. The students were taught how to write copy, draw layouts, how to produce a product, how to meet deadlines and its main goal was to learn how to have and deed with responsibilities. As it showed in their work, The Treasure Chest met their goals and pleased their audience. The Yan-Tat staff, however, missed their final deadline even though the book was finally completed by a minority of dedicated staff members. During the last week before the January deadline about five staff members spent long hours to finish the book. To raise money this year The Treasure Chest and the Yan-Tat Staff, sold candy. Candy—an ever so popular item that has been sold at school more than anything else. At the end of the sale The Treasure Chest and the Yan-Tat learned what It meant to make profits. With the profits earned The Treasure Chest decided to buy a computer to be used in future Journalism 1 classes and the Yan-Tat used their profits to pay for the production of the yearbook. MARKETING FUTURE THE Building A Future in Business Future Business Leaders of America, better known as FBLA, has long since been a well established club here at Bartlett Yancey. The FBLA Club has been established since May 15,1973, by Mrs. Blanche Page, instructor of many of Bartlett Yancey’s business courses. The FBLA Club started out small, but each year it continues to grow bigger and better. The purpose of FBLA is to establish and strengthen the confidence of young men and women and make them into competent, aggressive business leaders. This year the club sold Tom Wat, as it does each year, to raise money for the club. Tom Wat Is an ever so popular Item that many of the students enjoyed buying. FBLA involves many subjects of interest such as Typing I II, Shorthand, Accounting and Office Procedures at District and State levels. Each year several members compete In contests. The FBLA has previously had first place winners In competition at national and state levels. Several members have gone as far as to compete in contests in Chicago and Indianapolis. FBLA officers are from left to right Kim Miles, Michelle Paschal, Tracey Taylor, and Kim Stephens. 89 Mrs. Wiley decides what to buy from FBLA members in the lobby. WE THE PEOPLE Student Council practices democracy The Student Government Association was organized in order to boost school spirit and service as a link between students and the administra- tion. One student out of each homeroom one student was chosen to serve on the Council. These students representatives reported to their homerooms after each meeting to inform the other their classmates about what was decided and what projects were being planned. In 1985-86 the Council sponsored two dances which were held in order to raise money for the school. With the money raised this year the Student Council put plans in order to buy class direc- tional signs that are absolutely needed for the new students that come to high school each year. Other plans were made to buy a copy machine for the main office and smother prospect was to buy new blinds for the front of the school. Last year money was also raised to purchase things for the school. A VCR was con- tributed to the media depart- ment which has been in use in the main library since then. Letters for the stadium for the new football field were also purchased last year. SEARCHING FOR Afro-American expresses THEIR ROOTS black culture. AAS meetings are lively events and this one is no different. The Afro-American Club is one of the largest clubs here at B.Y. With over 175 members the club made it through each club meeting and something was accomplished at each. The purpose of the Afro- American club this year was to enlighten the members on black hlstoiy. Through meetings members learned how to benefit themselves from efforts of black support in the past to help them In tomorrow’s world. Goals this year for the club In- cluded the club being Involved in community events. Other goals were obtained by travel within the club to gather knowledge from black people for black people. The club had different speakers during the year that came and spoke to the club on black history and then answered any questions asked. During the year the club went to the State Fair. Plans were made for the purchasing of club jackets. Jesse M jelie looks over the plan for a club meeting. The officers talk with Mr. Malette about the club's planned events. 92 CHECK IT OUT! Media Club assists in library work. Felicia Graves clips articles out for the vertical file. Lisa Neighbors, president of the library club, provides leadership needed for the club. The North Carolina Library Association, of which our Library Club is a part of, was organized for the purposes of increasing pupil interest and participation in school library work, promoting better under- standing between local and state high school library clubs, and arousing Interest in the study of librarianship as a profes- sion. Topical duties of library assistants in- volves a desire of wanting to just how things are done. Circulating and process- ing materials is one of the many things a library assistant must do. Other duties in- clude clipping and filing vertical file materials, shelving books and magazines, helping with the production of audio- visuals, and assisting students with special projects. As you can see, library assistants render a valuable service to the school while learning more about the library. Tammy Collier assists Steve Stewart In checking out a book. The club dined at a marvelous French restaurant. They also made those delicious French sandwiches. Among many other things, the French Department had an interest in the foreign exchange student program in which many of the students planned to participate. In addition to all the other projects the club elected officers which would direct the club in any plans that were to be made. The club decided to buy exclusive sweatshirts with the official French emblem on the front. The French club also participated in French Day which was a day when all students were required to bring an item that was originally made in France. Over the course of the day each class viewed each item brought in by the other students and learned how each of the items was made. 95 Mrs. Graves directs the French Club’s activities during the year. Even though the Bugs had a disappointing .year, much ex- perience was gained. Days and days of hard work seemed to provide the Bucs with a little support, but once the Bucs were on the field the odds Just seemed to be against them. The team put forth as much effort as could be expected. Many of the Bucs gained recognition for their efforts but above all, Vincent Wilson, the star receiver and defensive end, gained All-Conference Honors. Next year should be a more promising year for the Bucs. Coach Horne resigned from Head-coach this year and maybe next year the Bucs will have a more confident perspective on the games they play. Shawn Graves leaps for the Jump ball against a taller Williams’ player. In the first half of the 1985-86 season, the Varsity basketball team had an un- defeated record In conference play. Their only loss at that point was in the Danville Bee Christmas Tournament in a controversial game against George Washington High School. Outstanding play was the norm for the Bugs during the entire tournament. Players Ray Henderson, Shawn Graves, Dana Elliot, and Spencer Gunn made significant contributions. The Bucs’ won against neighboring rival Reidsvllle both at home and away in out-of-conference play. These wins alone made the season successful. A close loss by two points to conference leader Cummings seemed to bode well for the remainder of the season. The team seemed to have the right mixture of experience and fresh, new players as they moved toward con- ference tournament play. The team wasn’t hurt too much by the loss of the 1985 players to graduation. The ex- perienced ball handling of senior Ray Henderson, kept the team on top and In control along with the excellent play of Shawn Graves and Dana Elliot. The 86 basketball team had the poten- tial to go far. The superb coaching of Lindsey Page gives the players the leadership and guidance that every team needs to be a number one team. Basketball team began the ’85-’86 basketball season with high hopes and a new coaching staff. After many years of successful coaching, Robert McCain left Bartlett Yancey to teach In the Greensboro City School System. John Mitchell transferred from High Rock Elem. to B.Y. to replace McCain as head coach of the team. Coach Mitchell was assisted by Coach Mike Langone, another fresh face at B.Y. this year. This staff managed to keep the high standards of the McCain era with a little spice that gave this new staff the title of “The Mitchell Era.” “We need to become able to press with better than average success,” was the comment made by Mitchell after an early January win over Western Alamance. The team won with a score of 61-45. The J.V. Basketball team had a few “kinks” in its chemistiy that caused the team to lose some games in the early part of the season. As the season progressed, the team became better acquainted with themselves. This was proven by how the team’s quality of play improved in the middle and the latter part of the season as the team rode at the top of the conference in late January. The Mitchell Era may have proven itself to be an Instrumental part of the Bartlett Yancey Atheletic Depart- ment. Louis Williamson plays the big “D” against Eastern. They had the ex- perience to pull through those close games with the efforts of the ten returning lettermen. Another great edition to the team was the returning All-Conference senior Barbara “Duck” Johnson. The Lady Bucs had a well balanced team this year with good speed and good height. Rebounding was one of the Lady Bucs most outstanding assets in most of their games. With one of the tallest teams in the Mid- State Conference the Lady Bucs hoped to have a year full of wins. As of Januaiy 28,1986 the Lady Bucs had a record of 5-2. After losing an All-State candidate, Nelson Watkins, to graduation, the 1986 Buccaneer wres- tling team had to rely on many underclassmen to continue the winning tradition that had been established over the past years. Under new coach, Joe Horne, the young team endured a hard season which stood at 1 win and 8 losses at the beginning of February. Within the dismal season outstanding wrestlers were Mitchell England, Anthony Sellars, Vincent Carter, Willie Turner, and Purcell Watkins. Coach Horne expressed the hope that the team would learn from the experience of 86 and regain Us winning form in 87. 116 GRAPPLERS WORK FOR WIN Wrestlers begin season under new coach Shouting out instructions, coaches Joe Horne and Ray Reagan prove that they have strong lungs and voices. Their record was 9-8 which tied them for 5th place In the conference. The two wins against Western Alamance were significant In that they knocked Western out of the playoffs. Outstanding play by Neal Bean helped the team tremendously. In one game, he hit 3 home runs. Mike Coleman won the batting average title for the school at .392 overall. The M.V.P. award went to Neal Bean. Coach Thompson commented, “The team played very well. They put forth a great effort for the season. They worked hard for the level of talent on the team.” The players lacked great team speed on the whole, but they had a great season in the end. Now the coach and the fans looked forward to the 1986 season with anticipation. While the team worked hard to win every game, the experience gained by their rela- tively short schedule was Invaluable. Their record of 3 wins and 7 losses spoke more of the caliber of their competition than It did of their play. Allen Gammon and Kevin Johnson provided the offensive punch. Coach Owen, m his first year as JV coach, was pleased with the progress of the team and looked forward to them giving the 86 varsity team a lift. 121 Kevin Johnson rounds the base after a homerun. FLEXING FEMININE MUSCLE Lady Bugs play hard softball In the spring of 1985, the Lady Bugs were taking no prisoners in the game of softball. They finished the season with an outstanding 10-6 record. This put the ladles in 4th place in the conference. Girls’ softball coach, Donna Edwards, felt that the team possessed the correct chemistry to give them the winning season they wanted. The team showed its greater talents in an impressive come back game against Williams High School. The Lady Bucs were down 0-10 in the 5th inning. In the 6th, the girls got it together and started a shocking come back. They went on to win the game 16-10. The MVP for the year was Melissa Murphy. Other outstand- ing players were Phyllis Price — batting average and Lori Slaughter — best defense. The all-conference players in- cluded Barbara “Duck” Johnson, Phyllis Price, and Melissa Murphy. Though they didn’t have a winning season, they felt like winners. Coach Hawks left his teaching position at the end of the 1985 school year; leaving not only a teaching position, but also the position as head coach of Men’s track. The track team had a record of 1 -6 in conference play. MVP was given to both Johnny Miles and Bobby Faucett. These two were outstanding players on the team. What the team lacked in speed, they made up for in character. Maybe the 1986 spring season will hold a winning season for the “winged-foot” Buccaneers. Coach Robinson also had his first relay team ever to go the reglonals. They were veiy successful there also. Key members of the team were Tracey Taylor, Norma Tanner, Deecy Harris, and Fonda McCadden. In the high jump, Tracey Taylor won the Mid-State Eastern conference, the sectionals, the regionals and placed 2nd in the state with a jump of 5 ft. 4 Inches. Norma Tanner, one of the members of the 440 relayteam, ranthe 100 meter dash in 12 seconds. Star athlete, Deecy Harris, set a new school record in the long jump. She placed 1st Ln the mid-State eastern con- ference and 2nd in the sectionals with a jump of 17 ft. 5.25 inches. “We had the best season ever,” commented coach Robinson. He also added, “We are looking forward to another great season. We lost one member of the 440 relay team to gradu- ation, but we gained a transfer student to make up the loss.” With many of the Lady Bugs returning, the girls track team should be the best team ever in 1986. Through many hours of hard work the Lady Bucs gained many useful skills that will be helpful in years to come. Overall the team improved in aspects of the game and hopes for next to better their 1-5 record of 1985. The girls coach this year was Ms. T.J. Coates who taught the girls many hard drills and made them work hard at their job. Team Captain this year was Phyllis Price who held her position veiy well.
