As a child in school she remembers that there were no clubs or sports and most of their days were spent working on school assignments, except In the middle of the day which in Cuba is siesta time, or a time to rest. Outside of school they would have dances and parties on special occasions. Dlstribuuve Education Being raised In a national forest may seem a little odd to some people but not to Mr. Bush who was raised in a small town in the center of the Great Smoky Moun- tains National Forest, Fontana, N.C. The school he attended was in one build- ing and contained grades one through twelve. The principal actually taught five classes daily. After high school, Mr. Bush continued his education at Appalachian State Uni- versity where he received a B.S. in English. The “Pathfinders” Begin Their Quest Recognizing that North Carolina has a rich and colorful history, the stu- dents at Bartlett Yancey, along with advisors Martha Pryant, Judy Loftis, James Totten, and Joe Stilwell, have organized a new club called the Tar Heel Junior Histori- an Association. Please observe him if you will, he’s Conductor Ronald Amos and he’s here to organize a Bartlett Yancey Band. Oh, what a band it will be my friends. Oh, yes a Division I band, do you hear. Bartlett Yancey is going to have a band today. With Conductor Ronald Amos on hand, Bartlett Yancey is going to have a Marching Band, as sure as the Lord made little green apples, and that band’s going to be in uniform.” Since Conductor Amos has been at Bartlett Yancey the Bartlett Yancey Marching Band has developed into a Divi- sion I band whose name is known throughout the state. He has organized a Junior Varsity Band which has received excellent ratings in concert competitions. He is not only a conductor to his students but also a friend in time of need.
