CLuSS HISTORY iiftcr eleven happy years at Bartlett Yancey School we assemble:! on the twenty-ninth of august to resume our studies as seniors. Thirty-one of cur original class members and one new member, Joe Il Morton, began the year,. Later, Anno Ashmore joined our class giving us a total of thirty-three ' members. In addition to the scholastic and social activities of the busy seniors they sponsored an operetta The Gypsy Trou¬ badour , written by Effa Preston and Don Wilson, was presented to a large and attentive audience on the nights of the eight- enth and ninetenth of April Under the excellent direction of Miss Grctchen Webster end with the splendid cooperation of the class, we presented a program of which we were very proud In gratitude to Miss Webster for her assistance in making our oper¬ etta a success the class presented her with four pieces of her chosen pattern in silver The proceeds of the Operetta made it possible for us to leave fifty dollars each to the Girls ' and Boys ' Basketball Teams for the.purchase of new basketball suits.- We also left fifty dollars for the erection of a memorial. In appreciation for Mr. D H. Abell ' s guidance and under¬ standing throughout our school days the Glass presented him with a table lamp. Gn May eightenth, thirty-seven seniors enjoyed a bac¬ calaureate address presented by Rev. J. G Phillips of Dur¬ ham, North Carolina. Four members had been added to our graduating class as they had successfully completed their high school work. May the ninetenth marked the end of our days at Bartlett Yancey High when we received our diplomas. ' We left Bartlett Yancey with mingled feelings of joy and regret and with a wish in our hearts that our future days would bring as much joy to us as the days that we had known here. We began the school year of 1946 determined to make it an outstanding year from the standpoint of achievement in our clcsswork and for friend ships 0 We have deeply regretted the departure of some of our classmates who have left us from time to time. Our class now has an enrollment of thirty-four. At the first of the year we elected our class officers. They arc : President...Filly Hunt Vice-President.IJocuanc ' Whitlow Secretary and Treasurer ....Lila Bradner These officers have served us faithfully and. have more than justified our faith in their ability. At this time we also elected our gradeparents. They are Mr. H, L. Lunsford, gradefrtor and Mrs. H. M. Potent, grade- mother. These gradeparents were popular and were elected by [a large majority. Most of our class participated in the recent basketball ;tournments. Hoys and girls who had never played before learn¬ ed how to handle the ball. A few members of our class are on tho basketball teams. The Junior Class ' s largest contribution to the field of sports is in bcseball. The Junior boys furnish a. large por¬ tion of the team. Our class conducted a Popularity Contest under the di¬ rection of our class sponsor, Mrs, Witty. Tho merchants prov¬ ed to be very cooperative; they readily sponsored their choice for the most popular girl when they were solicited by members of the class. We are using a part of this monoy for a Junior-Senior Banquet. The surplus will remain in the treasury for our Senior activities next year.
