X' Coach Glenn We Proudly Dedicate the 1975 Panther Parade to You Although Glenn Essary has taught shop, mechanical drawing, driver's education, health, and physical Education, most Bartlett students think of him as Coach Essary. In 1959 Mr. Essary came to Bartlett as ssistant football coach. Later, he became basketball coach, and one year he even held the head coaching oosition of both the football and basketball teams! During these years he produced some of Bartlett's finest eams. Then, a few years ago he was forced to terminate his coaching career because of his health, but this fear he returned to sports as head coach of the freshman football team and as assistant line coach of the farsity. Q Because of his outstanding service to Bartlett High School, both in sports and the classroom, the annual staff proudly dedicates the 1975 Panther Parade to you, Coach Glenn Essary. fn -jf,:5i ., iv' 'xv 1 '. Nothing can equal the unity felt during a heated fight-'tO win a basketball game or a freezing Friday night at the foot- ball field. We, as students and fans, are brought together in a feeling of pride for our school. The past few years have brought much enthusiasm about football, but not so long ago, the big sport here at Bartlett was basketball. In 1966 the varsity team, coached by Glenn Essary, won the title of Shelby County Champions. The next two consecutive years the Panthers went on to win the District Tournament. During this period there were high hopes and a good chance that Bartlett could make it to the State Tourna- ment and win. The incredible record for the 1968-69 season was 29-1. Last year the Panthers were named Shelby County Champions once again. , Since 1970, through the efforts of Coach Farley and Bartlett's finest athletes, base- ball has been a successful sport. That year we won the District Championship and went on to the Regional Playoffs. Four years ago we won the Regional and made it to the State. Last spring we made it to the District Playoffs but were defeated by Chris- tian Brothers High School. Among other sports at Bartlett are track and golf, which began in 1971, and tennis, which began in 1973. At one time there was a girls' bowling team, which won the County Championship in 1965. In the future when we recall 1975, we will remember these things about Bartlett's Athletics. . . 1974 Football Record BARTLETT OPPONENT 0 Iackson 20 26 Raleigh Egypt 20 27 Overton 6 14 Dyerburg 24 34 Covington 7 34 Brownsville 28 39 Millington 7 47 Germantown 12 54 Ripley 6 39 M.U.S. 14 24 Hillcrest 7 Super Record 9-2 Super Team Finishing the season with nine wins and two losses, Bartlett's Varsity Football Team was first in the county. Although the game with Iackson was a loss, the second reflected the strength of the Panthers and set the pace for a successful year. Tension was high for players and fans of both teams as Bartlett beat Raleigh-Egypt for the third consecutive year. The spirit produced by this game remained throughout the season, and for first time in eight years the Panthers won the homecoming game. The cli- max of the season was the victory over Hillcrest High School in the Milan Iaycee Bowl. 'Y if , H 1 , ' if - - A -r' i '?2.f ' - . , if- -e 'Q Q ,, V , an , ,,. When he took over as head coach in 1972, the current record was 1-8-1. In one year, he raised it to 5-5-0. He improved the team each year while gaining fame for himself. He was named Coach of the Year in 1973 because of his remarkable talent. This year the team was invited, for the first time, to the Milan IayCee bowl where they defeated Hillcrest High School from Memphis. Coach, we'll miss you. .in . . The students prepared special entertainment for both the football team and alumni. Students dressed accordingly for the festive event by wearing the school's colors, red and blue, and by par- ticipating in jersey day. Many organizations took part in the parade routed through the Bartlett area and followed by a rousing bonfire. The pep club, cheerleaders, and student body promoted spirit throughout the entire week, and final anxieties were brought out in Friday's big pep rally. Sec., P. Beard, Comm. of Student Act.: M. Bearden, Treas.: S. Wood, Comm. of Council Act fStand1ngJ G Bar Pres.: K. Crawford, V. Pres. The 1974-75 Student Council was at its best this year, enthusias- tically working for a better Bartlett. Sponsored by Mr. Bellamy and Mr. Deanes, the student council used club presidents, team captains, publication editors, and members-at-large to get the whole student body involved in activities. Officers are elected in the spring by the representatives. This year, the Student Council continued to be a backing force rather than the creator of activi- ties. President Greg Barnes, along with Vice-president Keith Craw- ford, Secretary Debbie Criste, Treasurer Marta Bearden, Comm. of Council Activities Susan Wood, and Comm. of Student Activi- ties Patricia Beard, led the Student Council through a full and enjoyable year. This year, the Student Council published a student directory and the helpful, ever-popular Panthers Calling, held the annual Student-Faculty Came, sold Valentines, and worked with the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. Bartlett's Student Council once again has lived up to their policy of helping others. Mix l, xt li ill, ell r- 4 iii' it ,Qt xt, ily til v Becton 1 Fero Mobley D. Ames G. Benton P. Crutchfield P. With common goals and common longings, we laughed, we played, we won. Those were our school days, our happy days. They were real because we made them real. They were alive, because we existed. And then, as suddenly as they had dawnedp they faded into the less carefree days of adulthood. And finally they are gone. . . those days in school. Around the corner are the unknown days of tomorrow. These changes were not made so because we liked them, but because we thought you might like them. It is our hope that in the future can look through your annual and have many pleasant memories of your high school days: if you can, t we have attained our goal. The success of this annual must be shared with Co-editor Margaret Williams and the other member the staff. We all join together in thanking Mrs. Gaines for her help, guidance. and patience in making '75 Panther Parade possible. d5owQ.2Q Toni Barentine Co-editor Dear Bartlett High, Being Co-editor of the 1975 Panther Parade has been the highlight of my high school experience. It given me a chance to do something that I enjoy while, at the same time, performing a service for the pe at Bartlett High School. I would like to thank the members of the staff for their hard work and cooperation and the faculty m bers who excused members from class to put the annual together. I would like to express special thank our advisor, Mrs. Gaines and Co-editor Toni Barentine for their constant support and devotion. We always share a common bond because of what we have been through.
