I superintend school. But poet's thrill, And singer's joy, and soldier's fire, And statesman's power-all-all are mine, For in this little group where still I just superintend school. Are poets, soldiers, statesmen-all I see them in the speaking eye, In face aglow with purpose strong, In youthful bodies, straight and tall, When I superintend school. And yes, the Bartlett Bulldogs gleam, As through the years always a team, The paper, the annual, the band, the plays Do all inspire me to watch my ways, As I superintend school. Bartlett High's partakers, gaze intent On cherished heights they soon shall reach. And mine the hands that lead them on! And I inspired-therefore content. I shall superintend school. 7 .97 ' ' ago, A Dear Students: The following quotations are presented with the intention that they may provoke some reflective thought. Cultivation to the mind is as necessary as food to the body. -Cicero. Freedom in a democracy is the glory of the state, and, therefore, only in a democracy will the free man of nature deign to dwell. -Plato. He that fancies himself very enlightened, because he sees the deficiencies of others, may be very ignorant, because he has not studied his own. -Bulwer. It has been said of the worlds history hitherto that might makes right. It is for us and for our time to reverse that maxim and to say that right makes might. -A. Lincoln. Let him that would move the world first move himself. -Socrates. If thou thinkest twice before thou speakest once, thou will speak twice the better for it. -Wni. Penn. Sincerely, 8 C. R. E 1 .Sleniwa 4 Tzwphecg This being 1979, the 25th anniversary of the graduation of the Senior Class of '54 from Bartlett, I was assigned to cover the personalities present. Silver Tom I-Iarbers, President of the Bartlett State Bank, was seated next- to his beautiful and charming wife, Sandra Thompson, who has just finished her new novel entitled A Cat Has Nine Lives, But A Frog Croaks Every Night. Seated next to her was my boss Billie jean jones, editor of the Davilla Herald. Andy Stockton director of that great Broadway hit How Green Were My Oats, was seated directly across from that great All-American, Trippin' Troy Halli- burton, who only last week ran the mile on two flat .......... feet. In a wheel chair next to Trippin' Troy sat Kenny Kunz, who, with his 389th broken bone, has just set a world's record. At this point the banquet was considerably brightened by the entrance of Billie Dean Lange-the Bernard Baruch of President Delora Muehlhause's advisory group on Lower Slobbovirfs Dogfood problem. Again the party was interrupted as JoAnn Zieschang's and Margaret Gommert's kids teed off in a battle for the olive dish. A few of the guests hadn't arrived, so I went outside just in time to see Cowboy Kent Sartor and his group of Wfestern entertainers, featuring vocalist Bill Xllfoody, Arrive in their Rolls-Royce bus. Coming in just behind them were Roy Steger, President of Universal Desk Mfg. Co., and his janitor assistant, brother Ray, who made a clean sweep in a poll taken to determine how fat a man can get and still get through the door. Enter Dawn Anderson, now boss of the upper SRA QSparks River Authorityj, and her fiance, Robert Lange. Robert has just come upon hard times, being forced to trade his jaguar for a used Buick. Henry Daugherty, whose Eskimo Ice Corporation has just frozen out all other companies, was circling in his hoppicapter as Sylvia Mastrovich brought her African Safari group entertainers in to play for the party group. just as I walked back in the hall, jaydene Cummings and Billie Irene Hol- comb, owners of Sloppy's Drive-in, were serving the meal which consisted of fried jumping beans. stuffed possum, and curried cactus pears cooked by Chef Charlotte Henry. Oh yes, we forgot to mention Rankin Obermiller who was unable to attend as he is just entering his 142 consecutive day of flagpole sitting in an attempt to set a world's record. Since this finished my assignment, I left to get my report in before the mid-night dead-line. jlrd. . SMU? 21 . .-....... .,., ' Claim, filfiicew, Fall Term President ......... ............. The Bulldogs won the season's opener from Class A Granger--18-7. Con- tinuing their round of non-conference play, the Bulldogs beat Class A Round Rock, Thorndale, Sam Houston High School of San Antonio, and Thrall by the scores of 14-13, 39-6, 15-6, and 63-0 respectively. The Round Rock victory was the first ever gained over the Dragons by Bartlett. Opening district play against Troy, the Bulldogs edged by the battling Tro- jans 6-0. Troy went on to finish district play with one defeat. The following weeks found Bartlett rolling over its district opponents, beating the Salado Eagles 48- 6, taking Rogers 60-0, beating traditional rivals Holland 38-0, and ending dis- trict play by trouncing Academy 52-0. The Bi-district championship game in Taylor saw Bartlett defeat the Bastrop Bears 20-14. In regional play, once again in Taylor, the fleet Tidehaven Tigers from Blessing put an end to Bartlett's winning streak by defeating the Bulldogs 45- 7. The football season will be remembered by those who played it as a hard pull, but can certainly be considered successful from every standpoint. Thanks go to Coach Poteet for another great season, and his second successive Bi-district Championship. -by Harry Perkins l james Hill Lynn Earl McCarver Billy Dean Lange Kenneth Kunz Fullback Quarterback Halfback Halfback 72 Gi if ig? 5' Davirl Holt Roy Stcger Billy XVoody Rankin Obermiller land Guard Center .
