Dana Buckstrom, Andrea Markl, Dawn Daily, Secretary: Malindu Oakes, Bitsy Napshin, Greg Emas. This has been a challenging year for Barstow. The Student Council, and the Student Faculty Congress have strived to improve the Barstow com- munity in many different ways. As president, my main aim has been to try to create more understanding be- tween all facets of Barstow. The newly formed Student Faculty Congress has been designed to do just this. Through an interplay between students and faculty, many problems have been re- solved, and both the student and the faculty have come to have a greater respect for each other. It is more important that the con- gress be supported by all. ln future years I would hope to see the congress an integral part of making Barstow a better school. W .P nun funwr Varsity Volleyball -li In the fall of ,77, sixteen girls showed an interest in becoming members ofa team. Many were unexperienced in the game of volleyball, and others had played previous ly. It would be a demanding season, perfection being the ideal . . . and winning a welcome by-product. After the last whistle had been blown and the nets dis- assembled, the number of wins had been few-but no one had really lost. For sixteen girls had offered time, practice, motivation, patience, and sincerity and had won experience, discipline, leadership, cooperation, re- spect for themselves and for others, and were, indeed, individuals who had meshed themselves into a team. Sven Hindlcjaer AFS 'er-Denmark You are going to spend the next year in the USA at the Barstow School in Kansas City. Where in the world is Kansas City?,' was my first thought. The map, however, revealed its location in the very heart of America. Since then I have learned more about this city and have come to like it very much. But the experi- , W s. ence I have had has stressed what the meaning behind AFS is all about: people. Bringing peo- ple together in order to help understanding and friendship grow is of greatest importance, The specific place to which you travel is of second- ary importance. Everyone I have met has shown such friend- liness and hospitality that I have been quite overwhelmed. It has been my luck to attend a school in which the individual student is respected and revered. This relatively small size renders the school an intimacy that has given me a chance to get to know everybody-teachers as well as students. It is hard here to express my gratitude for what people have done for me, but I will men- tion my host family, the Quinns. They have been making everything easier for me. And thank you to everybody at Barstow and the community. Sven Hindkjaer D1 XS. Andrea Mariel A F -er-A us tralia As I reflect on my AFS summer abroad, Ireeall my excited anxiety, apprehensions and fears dis- solving in the welcoming hands of my Australian family, the Saunders. Although not one of the 250 students with which I traveled lived near one anoth- er, each of us shared in perhaps the most gratifing aspect of the program: this opportunity of living with and becoming part ofa foreign family. Mr. and Mrs. S., Angela U71 and I lived in an eastern suburb of Sydney. The ties which formed between the Saunders and myself are immeasur- able. The warmth and kindness which they extend- ed towards me was unvielding. As they acquainted me with their customs and values, I was included in the family planning and discussionsg their daily routine became mine. Amidst slang terms and Aussie accents, embar- rassing moments were not infrequent, yet any and all communication proved the most valuable step- ping stone to my assimulation into their society and to their quest to learn of my natural family. Hence, family fireside cha' s over evening tea became most helpful and memorable. -+3 Xt ,I Xi, Nr . IC' ' f il IF, 'llll!ll Illllll Ililll mm E My AFS experience was a series of awakenings, from a purview of many Far Eastern and Asian cities to a self-realization of my capabilities. I grew aware of the extreme differences in social cultures and the similarities in all men. Most importantly, my AFS experience energized lny appreciation for life and faith in mankind. Thank you AFS Barstow, AFS International and especially my family for making my exper- iencc possible. Andrea Markl X... Y AW, T 9.1 I. :Q , Q 'Mg I af .
