N A50 V99 SNOIJQ VZINVS2-IO SNOI fL ST DENT COUNCIL Every Thursday morning a group of interested students meet to discuss various changes that would better the school and the community. Certain objectives were made for this year such as increased student involvement in student government and better relations with other schools. Such areas have been noticeably changed, and a more positive attitude toward the council has been observable. President Scott Wolff and Vice-president Bill LeBlanc set up a system of committees to head action in areas such as activities, entertainment, and student exchanges. Using this structure enables more students to be directly involved in government. With the arrival of our new Head- master, Dr. Quinn, it was an importantjob of the student council to inform him of Barstow's past and to discover what he hopes for its future RIGHT: The activities committee of the stu dent council sponsored this car wash on the Saturday ofthe Country Fair ,- R-., Left to right SEATED Mrs Cravens Dr Quinn Mrs Borden STANDING Mr Lawson Wolff president Bill LeBlanc vice president Andrea lVlarkl Sue Holden Alan Marrullier Diane Hall Mr Lacy 16 .l':'x- Ml. l . raw Barbie Christopher, Mary Clarkson secretary JR Williams Carol Davis David Neihart Scott ' 5 iii1:.iHivifv-vw s f 7 MIDDLE SCHOOL ST . With the help of a well-organized staff and an enthusiastic faculty advisor, Mrs. John Borden, there is more copy, creative layouts, and more extensive use of color. For the first time, the yearbook is a spring publica- tion followed by a supplement on the musical and the festivities of graduation week. Organizations happily received more detailed coverage: larger or more numer- ous pictures and explanatory copy. Constituting another first for the Weathercock, each senior received a personalized copy, This refurbished edition of the yearbook was pre- sented by a newly organized staff. There were, of course, the traditional editors-in-chief, the layout editor, and the advertisement manager, and so forth. However, the sections of the book, such as Activities or Sports, were each organized by the head of that section. This streamlined arrangement helped make it possible for the staff to meet the deadlines necessary for the earlier publication date. mmm-ver-mr. ' V-:fi -. '-.i K 4..-iff-,.... ' . Barstow Weathercocks throughout the ages! 29 I A-,..'f.r.4 fp :ff . l CI-IEMA GRO Last year a cooperative research and testing program was set up between Barstow and the Chemagro Corporation, a company which manufactures and tests chemicals used for agricultural purposes. Since the parent company is in Berlin, Germany, further testing must be done in the United States before the chemicals are accepted by the federal government for use in this country. Seven science-oriented students from Barstow are involved in projects and tests in which data is gathered and interpreted and sent officially to Washington. The group which is directed by Miss Karen Dyer includes Peggy Costin, Stan Dean, Jim I-lelman, Bill LeBlanc, Alan Marrullier, Sarah Smull, and Edward Tranin. The first test the students did was a study of growth regulators on geranium plants. This was preliminary to a turf growth study on a plot of fescue on the Barstow campus. Sixty-four meter-square plots were sprayed with different chemicals intended to stop growth at a certain point but still retain color and density. During the summer measurements and evaluations were taken weekly. Another test carried out was a soil micro-organism study. Different pesticides were put on 108 different soil samples, and periodically throughout the summer, micro-organisms ffungi, bacteria, and actenomycitesj were counted in order to show the effects of this pesticide with time. Unlike other laboratory work conducted in class, the students involved in the Chemagro project have the satisfac- tion of knowing that the results of their experiments have important meaning outside of school. This program is unique, and other schools will use the Barstow experience as a model in setting up their own projects. In addition to their regular fall soccer league, they played two games in St. Louis plus a state district game. The Knights were undefeated in league play but fell back to the stiff competition of St. Louis soccer. They came back to tie LaDue 3-3 but lost to Chaminade the following morning. In the first round of state, Barstow met a powerful team from McCluer. They lost 6-l but ended a very successful season. Although a very strong group of seniors will graduate, next year's hopes for beating stronger competition already looks promising. RIGHT: Captain Kent Sunderland gets set for another shot. V. division of the Interstate Soccer League. Nineteen boys worked their way through the league schedule undefeated, led by center forward Doug Price, this year's captain. In addition, the junior Knights gained valuable experience by following the varsity to St. Louis, where they learned much in losing two games. Brian Frazier and Scott Sanderude led the scoring for the offense, while Mark Zauchenberger and goalie Terry Taylor took control of the defense. John Goodman was joined in mid-season by former defensive stalwart, David Neihart, to form a midfield duo that dominated both ends of the field. The young Knights prospered while learning the varsity's system, and at the same time set a mark for next year's J. V. hooters to emulate. Next year already looks bright as the entire team is returning. The regular season saw only three losses, all to much larger schools, but it was in post-season play that the team excelled. Kim Lacy and Laura Babcock teamed to capture third place in district while Liz Block and Connie Tutera went all the way to the finals and qualified for state. Andrea Markl's play was outstanding throughout the entire year, she lost only one match. She led Barstow to first place in district by capturing the singles title without loss of a set. l-let season was not over until the final match of the State Tennis Tournament where Andrea won the first Missouri State Singles title in a difficult three set match. Her eight poihts gained from this win enabled Barstow to finish third in the state. ,gg 1,v u fi ,,. 2' f ' . - f, 5,.- . ft A-' 1' fr 1- - ft, .- 5.- . nllfjfffjl f' Q, ,-g.',,.f1,, lil! This year, for the first time, the ten cheerleaders, elected in the spring of the year before, are divided into a J. V. and a Varsity Squad. Under Captain Steffi Watson, the cheerleaders have brought not only new cheers, impressive forma- tions and pyramids, and undying spirit to Barstow, but have also displayed their enthusiasm through hall decorating with green and white balloons and streamers, humorous and clever skits and the involve- ment of the whole school in the sending of Christmas- grams. Barstow spirit is special, and, with these girls as cheerleaders, it never falters. Steffi Watson-Capt. The Varsity squad had trouble producing the wins that a crowd likes to see, but each member put out extreme effort during each practice and game. The competition this year, even in the 1-A division, was fierce. The Knights were almost always outsized, but toughness on the boards helped make up for the lack of height. Most of the wins the team achieved showed excellent shooting, passing, and running which created exciting basketball. Barstow looked very impressive against many strong teams, in fact, they were just shy of defeating Drexel and Wichita Collegiate, both of which were ranked in their respective states. The Knights also picked up a third place trophy in the Platte City Tournament where they were the only 1-A school competing. The 1976 season came to a close in the Cass-Midway regional. In the first round, Barstow drew a very strong team from Archie. The first half came and went in changing leads of no more than three points each time. However, Archie found the few places to overpower Barstow's defense and closed out the Knights' season. Despite this early defeat, the Varsity can still be proud of the way the season ended. f x , 1 ,F V if all T a TQ fi-w-'J 1 L Nfl' .. BASKETBALL The Junior Knights finished the cage season with a record of 8-7, the best for boys' Junior Varsity basketball in three years. Junior Varsity captain Bill Evans, a junior, led the team 's consistently balanced scoring by averaging 10.5 points per game throughout the campaign. Teamwork became the squad's watchword as they overcame a slow start to compile the winning record, claiming victories in 6 of their last 8 contests. Highlights of the season included victories over Immaculata and Drexel. The Knights consistently played tough teams to the wire, losing their homecoming game to once-beaten St. John 's by one point in the closing seconds. Several starters for the young Knights earned their way to Varsity positions during the course of the season, including Tom Woodbury, junior centerj Peter Sloan, sophomore forward, and David Neihart, freshman front- liner. In addition, Evans and his backcourt partner, sophomore Darren Chaney, and junior center Tyrone Saunders, from the nucleus of a group noted for tight, pressing defense and an offense capable of running the fast break or producing balanced scoring off a ball-con trol setup. The team thanks Coach Utz and Coach Thompson for their help, patience, and dedication. . , , X , W i Q , Q 1 X 4 1 ,, 1 -. . l A 1 1' . IX, . .j .... , , A , , 1 . , ass- ff 1 . Fourteen members helped to compile a seven win, four loss record, the best percentage of any Barstow team this year. Two of the four losses the freshmen suffered were on one shot taken with only seconds left. The highlight of the season came at the Milbrook Tournament. The freshmen took control of the other schools which were much larger and captured the first place trophy by defeating Rosedale 65-61 in the finals. Mr. Utz, the freshman coach, stated, The Milbrook Tourna- ment characterized the attitude and performances of our team which was just tremendous. The spirit among the 14 freshmen was very great and each of the wins was won by truly a team effort. till K K A ll!-1 RSTU ,gee .. 5 ll 'wwe 2 E YM WR S T04 3 ,fl 4 QR 5 T04, 4 0 lmglllw 1 , gfqpfrf, f ffcsg .t . lf. This year the ceremony took place February 20 at a home game against St. John's. A new feature added to this special evening was the Chili Supper sponsored by the Barstow A.F,S. chapter. Of course the primary interest was in choosing a Homecoming queen and her attendants. This process took almost a week from the initial nominations to the final crowning. Nominations for the underclassmen attendants are given by the team members, and the upper school student body and the faculty vote on these nominations. Dawn Daily was chosen from the freshman class along with Kim Lacy. Andrea Markl and Malinda Oakes represented the sophomore class, and Cindy Markl and Leigh Hilburn were the two candidates from the junior class. The three winners participated in the Friday night ceremonies by being escorted in front of the audience in long dresses. The escorts were as follows: Jim Collet for Dawn Daily, Rick Gyllenborg for Malinda Oakes, and Tom McGee for Cindy Markl. In the race for queen, three seniors were nominated by the team. Then, each was nominated to the entire student body by a speech from a senior boy in morning assembly. After the speeches everyone voted for his favorite. The final decision was announced at the game. Debbie Allen, escorted by David Curry, and Ruth Calkins, escorted by Bil.l LeBlanc, were the runners-up and acted as attendants to the queen, Stef Watson. Stef Watson was escorted to the center of the court by Brian Frazier. There, Kent Sunderland, President of the Barstow Athletic Association, presented her with a bouquet of flowers and her crown. The crown was carried by Bucky Peavey, and the flowers were carried by Lee Ellen Curry. After the ceremonies, each girl was escorted to her place next to the basketball court. Stef reigned from a white wooden throne draped in forest green velvet, and her attendants surrounded her. After the game the traditional Homecoming dance was held in the dining room. X f A JSBS SEIIJIIAIJQOV SQIIJLIAILLQV S 1 i V H C O U N T R Y F A I R Country F air, a well established tradition at Barstow, was purely bicentennial this year with its red, white, and blue theme. Mrs. Joseph E. Stevens, Jr., chairman, Mrs. Myron E. Sildon, co-chairman, and Mrs. C. W. Haren, Jr., chairman-in- training, worked to coordinate this tremendous fund raising project. Some Fair events actually occurred before that sensational weekend arrived. There were, for instance, the Tennis Tourna- ment, the Auction, and the Preview Luncheon. Friday night was a popular time to attend the carnival rides and the midway. Saturday the booths were open in the Brookfield Gymnasium. There, one could find special items in the Farmer's Market, and Flower Booth, the Book Corner, and the Barstow Booth. Of course, the Flea Market, an old stand-by for bargain hunters, made its annual appearance. Good square meals and delectable desserts were available at Trail 'S End. The place-to-be Saturday night was the Country Fair Dance sponsored by the Student Council. Those present included Barstonians of all ages from recent alumns to Middle School students. With the end of the dance came the end of another successful Fair and the beginning of plans for the next one. FRESHMA - SOPH OM ORE PLA Y CON TEST The Freshman-Sophomore Play Contest is an annual event on or near Valentines Day. It is governed by such rules as the following: each group has only two weeks to prepare, they are limited on their practice time on stage, and there are no costumes or props used. As usual, the freshmen performed first, Their abundance of acting ability, organization, and cooperation helped them to stage an outstanding presentation. The sophomores, despite some difficulty, gave an entertaining show. Both groups used similar staging with the wall, chairs, trees, and doorways all made of people. The seniors and juniors led the traditional singing, clapping and cheering while the judges deliberated over their decision. In order to secure impartiality, the judges were chosen from outside the school and placed in the audience unannounced. This year the decision was clear, and the master-of-ceremonies, Mr. James Combs, soon came in to award the silver winners' cup to the freshmen. Since this was the second loss for the sophomores, they received the relatively new rip-off award. Following the contest everyone retired to their respective parties. The sophomores were entertained by the juniors in the physics lab. The freshmen, however, celebrated with the seniors in the double rooms. The winners' party was excep- tionally festive because it was the first time the senior class had ever been to one! fThey were the last class to earn the rip4off award. J NFX-Y we F. -ir qi-MV IT . This musical evening is a tri-school tradition in which Pem-Day, Sunset, and Barstow participate to entertain their friends, fami- lies, faculty and alums. This year Barstow's two groups were coordinated to create a unified program, The Singers, under the direction of Mrs. John Wendorff, sang a group of favorite songs from the late 1800's. With their long dresses, bow ties, and cigars, they were able to bring back the full flavor of the time, The Choir, on the other hand, sang a medley of songs from 1900 to the present. Thanks to their director, Mrs. Michael Mallory, they amused the audience with their humor- ous actions and choreography. DO UG PEA VEY AFS-HOLLAND The American Field Service is not a vacation in a foreign land. but a true learning experience, I leamed things, both about the people in Holland, and about myself of which I was previously unaware. Ilearned that the family I stayed wth, the Van Doorens, lPa, Ma, Iflaarten, Michiel, Christine, Hanne, Margriet, and Gijsj was typically Dutch. They were fun-loving, kind, very close, and generous enough to keep a boy like me for three months. This AFS experience has taught me to appreciate my family here in the U.S., my individuality, and most of all, my great country-The United States. Having the opportunity to live in a different country with a different family enables a person to see himself and his country at a distance, which is a rare opportunity. I would like to thank my family in Holland for a wonderful summer. Finally, I would like to thank the Barstow AFS chapter for their months of hard work in helping enable me to achieve this fantastic ex- perience, the AFS experience. It can be a boy. . .It can be a girl. . .or a cat. . .or a dog. . .or even a white mouse. A tree can be a different kind of friend. It doesn 't talk to you, but you know it likes you, because it gives you apples. . .or pears. . .or cherries. . .or, some- times, a place to swing. A brook can be a friend in a special way. It talks to you with splashy gurgles. It cools your toes and lets you sit quietly beside it when you don 't feel like speaking. The wind can be a friend too. Sometimes it calls you to play. It pushes you from behind as you walk and makes the leaves dance for you. It is always with you wherever you go, and that's how you know it likes you. Sometimes you don't know who are your friends. Sometimes they are there all the time, but you walk right past them and don 't notice that they like you in a special way. And then you think you don't have any friends. Then you must stop hurrying and rushing so fast. , .and move very slowly, and look around care- fully, to see someone who smiles at you in a special way. . .or a dog that wags its tail extra hard whenever you are near. . .or a tree that lets you climb it easily. . .or a brook that lets you be quiet when you want to be quiet. Sometimes you have to find your friend. Some people have lots of friends. . .and some people have quite a few friends. . .but everyone. . . everyone in the whole world has at least ONE friend.
