For all of these reasons, and many More which cannot be written On a page but felt in our hearts, We of the 1974 Weathercock dedicate This book to a great friend of Barstow And her people: our headmaster. Not all has been easy this year as we have sought together to lead the school in the proper way. However, there are those among you who came forward and showed us great qualities of discernment and the ability to choose the right path. You go now on your many ways, and all of us who remain behind wish you success in your college years and in the many tasks ahead of you thereafter. You leave behind an impressive recordp go with our blessing and best wishes for success to each of you. Sincerely yours, Gordon K. It is possible to feel a very strong attachment for a certain range whose outline has grown familiar to our eyes, ora clear peak that has looked, day after day, upon our joys and sorrows, moderating our passions with its calm aspect. We come back from our travels, and the sight of such a well-known mountain is like meeting an old friend unchanged. But it is a one-sided affection. The mountain is voieeless and imperturableg and its very loftiness and serenity sometimes makes us the more lonely. Henry Van Dyke -.vg'T ,w, g ? 6' M6 ! B... f,i??.gg,s..1 v-His. E ILY THA AFS Through the experience of living with a family in Afghanistan I learned respect for differences in cultures and this increased my tolerance and understanding. But the most important influence of this experience was the realization of the many kinds of intelligence that man has. Because I have never needed to call upon the special kinds of strengths one needs to adapt himself to living in another culture, I didn't know I had them. For example, because I was not fluent in the language of Afghanistan I had to find other ways to grasp the meaning of life around me and make sense out of it. I was very surprised to discover that my other types of intelligence were becoming strong enough to compensate for the lack of word meaning. I began to observe intently the facial Bazaar in Kabul, where the various ethnic groups minye and trade. Afghan people come from many tribes. This is a Kuchis ICOO-cheesl tent. They are a nomadic people-fierce and proud. expressions, tone of voice, body languages of the people around me. These kinds of expressions have been somewhat hidden from me because I haven't needed them especially. I became fascinated by this communica- tion and strongly influenced by its power. But the greatest intelligence I discovered was the ability to perceive the need all people have to be loved and cared about, and how important it was to find ways to act on this intelligence.
