Inside class, He reaches us with patience And fairness. Outside class, He remind., us of what is best about Barstow In his firm and quiet love of her ideals. Sometimes he will surprise us With a hat-and-cane dance, With a poem he has written, With a moment from his New Hampshire childhood. We of the 1973 Weathercock Would like to dedicate this book To a physicist, A mathematician, A craftsman, A lover of rockets and children and stars. This gave me ten days to prepare before I had to leave for my two days of orientation in New York. In New York, all the AFS'ers going to Europe met and, in many group meetings, discussed what we would be going through in the two months to come. When the two days of meetings were finished, we all left on a chartered plane for Brussels, Belgium. From Brussels all the other AFS'ers left for their assigned countries. The 47 students who lived in Belgium had two more days of orientation in Brussels before we were to meet our new parents. I had left Kansas City on a Monday, and after all the time changes, I finally met my Belgian parents on Friday. My new family, the Redings, consisted of my mother and fatherg my sister, Irene: and my two brothers, Pierre and Jacques. My father was a dentist and also owned a small cleaning company. My mother was the manager of the company and she also handled all of the housewife jobs. Both Irene and Pierre were medical students, and Jacques had just finished high school and was leaving in mid-August for Oklahoma City, also on the AFS program. My two months in Belgium were spent in Knocke, a resort town on the northern coast. My family was vacationing in Knocke and in the winter lived in Arlon, a very small town in the southeast of Belgium. I played tennis almost every day I was there and averaged a tennis tournament once a week. Jacques and I were of equal ability so I never had trouble finding someone to play. Other than tennis, the activities which kept me busy were swimming, bicycling into Holland, walking with my parents, and sitting around watching TV. After Jacques left for Oklahoma, I was more on my own than I had been. I traveled a few times to Brussels with Irene and Pierre and found more time to travel into Holland on my bicycle. The summer went too quickly and on August 29 my parents drove me to one of the train stations in Brussels. I said goodbye to my family and then went with the other AFS'ers to the youth hostel for two days of a re-orientation. It was then back on a plane and back to New York. After spending one night there, I flew back to Kansas City and the end of my experience. MARVIN GATES AFS: EQUADOR May 19, 1972 They came today! My AFS papers came today! I am going to Quito, Ecuador lwherever that isl. My family sounds fantastic. I have a mom and dad, two married sisters, one brother, and a sister who is now living in the States with the AFS program. I leave a month from tomorrow. I am so excited! June 20, 1972 I'm petrified. What have I gotten myself into? I am going to spend ten weeks with a family I have never seen. There are 52 of us from all over the U.S. going to Ecuador, 15 going to Quito. The kids I have met so far are great. I doubt if any are as scared as I am. July 15, 1972 I will never get over how beautiful Quito is and how friendly the people are. I love being surrounded by mountains. A few days ago two friends and I drove to the top of one of the smaller mountains and looked down on Quito. It was fascinating to see how the city was built on a narrow plateau. It is exciting the way my family accepts me as a member and not as a guest. I go to futboI lsoccerl games with my father. I shop with my mother. My sister and brother-in-law tease me unmercifully about my Spanish. My relatives are great, too. They are patient with me when I mix them up. There are hundreds of them, so I mix them up regularly. August 27, 1972 I leave tomorrow and it's going to be hard. When I left the U.S. in June, I thought ten weeks was an extremely long time to be away. Now I see it was all too short. I am just getting to where I can carry on an intelligible conversation in Spanish. I have finally connected most of my relatives' faces with their right names. And I have to go. It's going to be difficult to explain my Ecuadorian summer. There aren't words to describe the beauty of the Andes mountains, the experience of sharing with an incredibly friendly people, their colorful and unhurried way of life, and the unspoken love between my family and me. Only those who have been privileged to have had a similar experience can understand my appreciation of having been given this opportunity. SHARON MURRAY LAUREN SCHWARTZ PORT ELIZABETH, SOUTH AFRICA AMERKIAN FIELD SERVICF FRANCE Friends, As time for my departure draws near, I have begun to reflect on my AFS year and experiences. These include the good times lwhich are always neat to havel as well as the bad times, which seem so few in recollection. Every day, however, helps one appreciate, learn about oneself and others. Barstow and my friends here have given me many good times. For this I want to thank you. Thank you all for the opportunity afforded me to come to the USA and attend a unique high school such as Barstow. I will always remember the fun, the smiles, the Glee Club events and the excitement that went with them, the jokes about my accent and great lha! hall hockey abilities. IVIost of all I will remember the very personal atmosphere in the Barstow halls. Good luck Barstow, good luck friends. Seniors-here's to many years of happy college days and infinite good memories. l'd love to reciprocate your hospitality and hope to see you one day in my home town at the southern tip of Africa. I'll remember you all. Goeie Wense lAfrikaans for good wishesl Much love, 51 it rec' f X v -TD K. 17' .Z-'f --I--c 1, Vni, lk - e MINI-COURSES Astronomy Made Simple Biology Lab Block E.S.P.
