Summer AFS Program How could I possibly describe my AFS experience in France this summer? I could very well say that it served to out the apron strings in giving me a chance to maneuver on my own, that it gave me a whole new insight on living with other peopleg that it showed me that people, Americans, French, whatever, are basically the same, that it offered me the opportunity to play a small part in furthering world understanding, and that it prepared me for welcoming Binky into my life as my AFS sister-all this I could say, and it looks as if I have, so all that remains to be said is thank you, Barstow, for the opportunity, and above all- . it Y 4. N. . o 'X'- Qg S A IQWAQ VlVEAFS!!l I1 Our lives lean on such a delicate balance that we must tread with care so as not to fall behind into nostalgia or ahead into expectation-both are isolation, it is with a cord finely and tightly interwoven with human qualities of understanding and maturity that we hold ourselves upright. These various qualities I learned, strove for, and earned as an Experimenter in International Living in Nantes, France during six weeks this past summer, adaptability, appreciation, self-confidence, patience, reflec- tion and evaluation, and dependency upon love. I lived with the Pierre Py family of Nantes and their two sons, Michel who was I8 and jacques, 16. Their 22 year old sister, Marie-Helene, was away teaching in Switzer- land. My French mother was a strong personality, excellent cook, and my father, an ironmonger, was piercingly jolly. Adapting to a slew of altered customs, new foods, disappointments from precon- ceived notions, flooded sleeping bags during the camping trip, and unrestrained independence was a difficult adjustment. With dread and some anticipated devilish- ness each experimenter learned to heed the motto Expect the unexpected. Kathy Hunzicker
