I could very well say that it served to out the apron strings in giving me a chance to maneuver on my own, that it gave me a whole new insight on living with other peopleg that it showed me that people, Americans, French, whatever, are basically the same, that it offered me the opportunity to play a small part in furthering world understanding, and that it prepared me for welcoming Binky into my life as my AFS sister-all this I could say, and it looks as if I have, so all that remains to be said is thank you, Barstow, for the opportunity, and above all- . it Y 4. N. . o 'X'- Qg S A IQWAQ VlVEAFS!!l I1 Our lives lean on such a delicate balance that we must tread with care so as not to fall behind into nostalgia or ahead into expectation-both are isolation, it is with a cord finely and tightly interwoven with human qualities of understanding and maturity that we hold ourselves upright. These various qualities I learned, strove for, and earned as an Experimenter in International Living in Nantes, France during six weeks this past summer, adaptability, appreciation, self-confidence, patience, reflec- tion and evaluation, and dependency upon love. I lived with the Pierre Py family of Nantes and their two sons, Michel who was I8 and jacques, 16. Their 22 year old sister, Marie-Helene, was away teaching in Switzer- land. My French mother was a strong personality, excellent cook, and my father, an ironmonger, was piercingly jolly. Adapting to a slew of altered customs, new foods, disappointments from precon- ceived notions, flooded sleeping bags during the camping trip, and unrestrained independence was a difficult adjustment. With dread and some anticipated devilish- ness each experimenter learned to heed the motto Expect the unexpected. Kathy Hunzicker Binky AFS 1970-71 Quezon City, Philippines Somehow I cannot hnd the right words to explain how I feel about my year at Barstow. All the words that come to me now seem so inadequate to describe so rich and beautiful an experience, I can only say that after having been a part of all or' you, I o'on't think I can ever be the same. I must admit that I am eager to return to my family and country yet intermfngled with this eagerness is much sadness too. I hnd myself now a part of two worlds that physically cannot be made one, no matter how much I wish this to be so. Both my worlds are hlled with great happiness and love, and both will always be special 50, for all the little joys we've shared your words of encouragement when they were most needed even for the nicknames and the teasing for the songs and fun times, and for just making me one of you-thank you. i , ,--...Q-0 ML Dalupan Bfnkyk sister and brother y MW rm: rw W1 f' 5 , 'GS Qs. -u , Mrs. Dalupan Binkyk sisters ,f v s .iff ' Q Bfnky and her American family lhe Murray? 1 5 I 4 I 7 K IJ T In , Iwi G99 P - I 2 ' 1 Fix 'J O -W fi vfx v-DQU I 1 21' v uw Senior Slave Day 541 ', ' , , M Senior Ditch Day -J 1 lv 'il i ai ' Q' - . 4 I., 1' Q Y' i .K f - 'H , Y., :ij-x..W .1 V ' 7, V - . fmivi , ' 'Q M 5 w 'iq' -'wa?Ffv MW ff? X Consider the challenge to a coach of fielding a varsity basketball team in a school that doesn't even have a male senior class . . . and where the enrollment of freshmen, sophomore and junior boys is only 39. And only 14 of that number turn out for the squad! For Delvin T. Norris, former end on the Kansas university football squad, the challenge is the greatest since he participated in the Jayhawk Orange bowl game of 1948. Norris now is director of athletics at the Bar- stow school. This season Barstow or- ganized its first varsity basketball team. We're one school where we can truly say, with real enthusiasm, 'wait until next year,' Norris comments. Why next year. Well, we'll have for the first time a senior class of boys at Barstow. And we'll have probably around 55 or 60 boys in our upper school. Norris, who also was an outstand- ing13-sport athlete at Northeast high sc ool, acknowledges Barstow's bas- ketball debut hardly has been glori- ous. Last Friday night the squad lost to St. john's, 53-25. Two previous losses were to Sweet Springs. ahh Barstow Lacks Cnly Numbers Long a school with only an enroll- ment of girls, Barstow 10 years ago switched to a co-educational system. The first boys then were admitted to the nursery and lower grades. Now male students comprise all but the senior class. There barely are enough to field a basketball team. But Barstow leaders believed it was time to commence an inter- scholastic program, Norris com- ments. Our boys have got tremendous spirit. In that first game against Sweet Springs we scored 51 points, although we lost. But that was a tremendous effort. Of course, we are competing only in the class S tsmalll division of state athletic com- petitions. But we think we are making a fine beginning. As director of athletics at Barstow, Norris has responsibility for a variety of programs, including swimming, track and field and soccer. His bas- ketball program includes teams in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades and the junior varsity. Coaching for the varsity squad is handled by Norris and by Charles Wretling, a former athlete at Kansas State university who now attends Calvary Bible college. We do have some unusual chal- lenges, Norris explains. lf some of our boys are ill, or have to go out of town, we really get short. One time, one of our key guys went on a ski trip, and we really were without the talent we wanted. Normally, we list seven members of our varsity and seven on our junior varsity. But we have to combine everybody when the ranks get thin. In one of our games, when fouls took a big toll, we had to play the last 58 seconds with only four men. Every coach can talk about pride and determination of his squad. But our boys know they are setting a precedent, Norris says. They real- ize they'll long be remembered as the first varsity squad at the school. They really are trailblazers. Barstow has chosen to emphasize basketball at present in its athletic program. The team approach down through the sixth grade indicates the look to the future. Norris especially is high on his crop of seventh graders. The 20 boys we now have in our seventh grade comprise the most tal- ent of any class of young men I have seen, Norris says. ln a very few years they very well could be win- ning state championships. - . it 1 'I f ha - - I A 'E ' lux- V 1 iv iw 1 I g E 5 ' .. ,A ' f I V . -5 ,. ., - :'- 53, -' ' f s 3 . 1-.. Headmaster Dear Class of 7977: Congratulations on your completion of High School You have reached a point of departure, one requiring fitting into a new world of challenge and excitement. from the game of contract bridge one learns a secret of life. Perhaps it will be heloful to you to carry on with this thought: it is not holding a good hand which matters as much as playing a bad hand well All of us look for a golden lile, one full of happiness, joy laughter, and the like. Unfortunately we face disappointments and heartaches, but these can be overcome by accepting and rising above them. Nothing which happens to us is nearly as important as the wa y in which we meet that event. You ha ve met many of the rigors of leadership as seniors with skill and sincerity this yeaig' we will miss you but now we all join in wishing you the Class of 7977, a fond farewell Cordon K.
