HISTORY beventy three years ago two young Wellesley graduates Ada Brann and Mary Louise Barstow, founded a private school for girls III Kansas City 'lhat school flourishing today is considered, both ln this region and in the Last, one of the city s greatest assets During IIS first sixteen years, the school knew three different locations all of whleh were IH the same block the block we t of brace and Holy Tflnlly Cathedral The school curriculum, at this time, was restricted for there was no campus for outdoor sports and there were no regular art and music departments ulte unlike today moreover there were no school organizations The school prospered however, and it was not long before Vliss Brann s certificate admitted its possessor to all the big Eastern colleges Unable to cope with the strain her duties brought upon her Miss Brann, with falllng health, left amid uniyersal regret, and thus closed the first period of the school history the school Un Westport Ayenue at the head of Baltimore a new yellow and white schoolhouse sur rounded by a fair amount of land arose It was in this locality that Miss Barstow s school began the second phase of its outer history The first a aOClalS principal was Nliss Caro Taylor who upon her marrlage was sufceeded by Hose Adelaide Wlitham an outstanding graduate of Smith College Her coming was a fortunate ey ent for Barstow for she not only carried on all its ideals and policies but also added an extra touch by her own ability and scholarship lt was during this second period of the schools existence that most of the extra curricular actxvltles and tradltlons originated A large room on the lower floor was made mto a gymnasium and equipment was provided for outdoor sports It was then that Field Day made its appearance Despite the lack of a music and art department as such a Glee Club was organized and classes 1n arts and crafts were conducted The Halloween Plav Contest, the Pretenders, and the Weather Cock all took shape during this part of Barstows history Other important additions were a kindergarten and later a dormitory N 7 . , , 3 , , - 7 , V , .
