THROUGHACAREFUL STUDY WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE IMPROVEMENTS AS WE MOVE ONWARD. IT IS WITH SOME SADNESS THAT WE SEE EACH SENIOR CLASS GRADUATE, YET THERE IS ALSO PLEASURE IN OUR KNOWLEDGE THAT IT IS ANXIOUS TO MOVE FORWARD INTO NEW FIELDS OF ENDEAVOR. SO LONG AS BARSTOW HIGH SCHOOL IS ABLE TO MAINTAIN THE HIGH STAND- ARDS IT HAS SET IN SCHOOL SPIRIT, SPORTSMANSHIP, CHARACTER DEVELOP- MENT, AND SCHOLASTIC ATTAINMENT WE CAN ALL BE PROUD TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF IT. WE HAVE MUCHOF WHICH TO BE PROUD IN BARSTOW HIGH SCHOOL. LET US BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT HAS BEEN DONE IN THE PAST AND MAY WE EVER STRIVE TO MAKE EACH YEAR A BETTER ONE. DEDICATIO Longerin tenure of service to Barstow High School and associated inthe memories of more students of our school than any other teacher is Mrs. Maude Witt. Because she has directed her time and abilities toward diligent, disciplined instruction, interspersed with a twinkle of humor, she has contributed much to the students' development. In grateful recognition of this guidance, we affectionately dedicate the 1952-'53 Bear Tracks to Mrs. Maude Witt. THE ANNUAL STAFF BILL CUMMINGS MRS. HAYES DIXIE TURNER Asst. Dixie leaves her intellectual abilities in Mr. Wright's classes to Margaret. Watch out for Civics, Mar- garet! Eddie leaves her perfect attendance to Billie Sue. Remember to get to school before 4 o'clock. To Patsy and Betty, Sue leaves her quiet, studious, amiable attitude in English grammar. Joy leaves her ability to leave school at4 o 'clock every afte rnoo n to Martha. Joy was the only Senior of 1953 that ever left at 4. Willy leaves his Presidency in the D. E. T. A. to Don. To Darrell, Bill leaves his honesty and integrity in studies. Dudley leaves his romantical ways with girls and his mechanical ability to keep old wrecks going and call them cars, to Howard. Jackie is just leaving. He says. To the Fres hman class of 1953 we leave our re- served seats in the office fthey'll probably use them anyway-Don, Howard, Ann, Carol, Truman, Ramon et al, that means all the re st of youl. And to the following Senior Classes we leave our most endear- ing quality. Our c o-ope ratio n with teachers and classmates. lt keeps things from'getting too dull. .. Crowds of gaily dressed people were gathering in the stadium of the spacious high school grounds. The stadium, the pride not only ofthe school but of the entire community, was rapidly filling with the hundreds who wanted to have a part in the reunion of the class of 1953. A fine class, asserted gray-haired Mr. Wright. As fine a class as the school ever sent out, and we were certainly proud of them when they were graduated. Relieved, too. y Are most of the members here? asked his companion. A few are here, and several others are ex- pected to come in on the Air-Line Limited which is due now. 3 , He spoke truthfully, for in a few minutes eager faces watched the approach of the early afternoon Air- Line Limited, and the band began their exultant melody of welcome. The stage was set and all was ready forthe reunion of the class who had graduated twenty years before. As the band finished playing, the class of 1953 of B arstow High School took its place on the flower-trimmed platform with perhaps more dignity but with all the gracefulease and abandon of twenty years ago. As the large company looked upon these men and women who had returned with laurels for the old school, they broke into deafening cheers of welcome. Seated before the admiring crowd were these distinguished alumni of the Class of 1953: Bill Roach, his old-time assurance multiplied several degrees, who had gained wealth and distinction as a busy New York lawyer. He had also gained a five-foot waist line and an accumulation of avoirdupois in keeping with his dignity. Seated together onthe platform were two old friends who had become happy widows pursuing their careers on the money left by their accommodating departed weaker-halves, Dixie Turner and Eddie Knowles. In Highschool Dixie used to advocate better order in the classrooms and thought the girls should hold half of the s c hool offices, so it was not surprising that she went in for civil reform. She reformed her town and county and then tackled the state. Now she is down at Washington telling things to Congress. A good many folks have heard from Dixie and more are going to. Was Eddie a Woman in Politics? She opened her mouth too wide for that, and kept it open too long. She became a famous singer. Joy Alldredge, who was principal of Barstow High School at this time, was overjoyed to have her old classmates assembled there again. She had refused many offers of marriage because she was in love with teaching and had charge of the English department. She wanted to teach in this school in order to be re- venged on future classes for the roastings the Facult gave the Class of '53 during their High School years. Dudley Rogers had become a noted inventor. I-le got out a good car that was cheaper than a Ford and was very successful. In fact he was as successful in building from scratch as he was formerly in patching the scratches. ' Familiar to all were the broad shoulders and western gait of Bill Cummings who owned one gofthese wondrous western ranches we hear so mu-ch about, where seeds come up almost over night. His acreage is broad, black, and fertile. Bill married our capable Sue Wilson, who always had a fondness for calves and baby ba-baas. Now, besides caring for her spacious ranch home, she also cares for several babies who boo-hoo. I Jackie Hayes hadprosperity written all over him. Yes, he was congressman, He got an office from an opponent, and then got into the legislature--now he's in Congress and no telling what he's getting. He even came in his own airplane. Yes, Mr. Wright was visibly moved as he presented these illustrious members of the graduating class of 1953 who had returned' laden with honors forthe best school a class ever left, BARSTOW HIGH SCHOOL. ...
