At the time we didn't really realize how he had affected us the 2 years he had been here. A friend of many, he is one whom we all will remember and ad- mire. He has pulled the 70 Seniors through many hard times, and for this we are grateful. We hope that this dedication can, in some small way, repay him for that which he has given. 4 IN APPRECIATION Throughout our years at Barry High School, little has been said to show our appreciation for the help, guidance and support our parents have given to a cause we have often questioned. If.it hadn't been for our parents and so many other people we could never have made it this far. They've bought our candy, magazines, etc., baked our pies and were always there when needed. The class of 1970 is indeed indebted to the ones closest to US--OUR PARENTS. 5 ffffli !ii ? ■a ir LEADERS IN SCHOOL AFFAIRS Mr. Lee Hoskin--Superintendent Mr. Marvin Haley--Principal The Board Members aid our new administrators in orientating them to the school. Mr. Haley is the sponsor of the Student Council. The 1969-70 officers for the Student Council were: Karma Norton, President; Bradley Brinkman, Vice Presi- dent; Judi Tunget, Secretary; and Gary Rennecker; Treasurer. The Student Council took an active part in helping the faculty select both the grade and high school cheer- leaders. During the year, the officers of the Student Council participated in an active exchange of Student Council members with Liberty High School. This was an opportunity to exchange council ideas and further the relationship between the schools. 17 THE BARRY YR-RAB STAFF After many long hours of hard work, the Annual Staff has completed the 1970 edition of the Yr-rab. Under the guidance of Lloyd Phillips, editor, Ellen Haddock, assistant editor, and Miss Diane Hale, sponsor, the Annual Staff has devoted much time and patience to the completion of the book. May this Yr-rab bring back fond memories which will kindle a spark to the fire and let you remember all the experiences shared at B.H.S. Look, they didn't bleed off and they bled on. And see all this white space in the middle! Roger keeps Lloyd and Ellen on their toes as he applies some of the points the three learned at the Annual Work- shop in Quincy. The Barry Annual Staff spent 2 1 2 days soliciting ads to make money for the 1970 Annual. COMPLETES THE 1970 ANNUAL During special events throughout the year photographer Bill Wade took part of the loard off Yr-rab photographers, Frank Wood and Bill Bainter. TOP: S. Yelton, M. Bogan, B. Moore, J. Raft- ery, K. Lumley, and Miss Hale. 19 Our devoted Math teacher, Mr. Lawr- ence Henderson, arrives on the scene early and stays late to avail his ser- vices to any student. His subject field ranges from fundamental math to in- volved mathematics and Trig. The first semester the Trig class made a large chart of the sine, cosine, and tangent curves, and also made in- dividual ones for their personal use. These tables were used at various times throughout the year to aid the stu- dents in their assignments. 20 Miss Marilyn Campbell, history teacher, is a newcomer to Barry High School. She is a grad- uate of Southern Illinois University, Edwards- ville campus, and is familiar with our area as she is a native of Pearl. Miss Campbell spon- sored several trips the Problems class took dur- ing the year to the Pittsfield courthouse and the State Hospital in Jacksonville. Student Current Events quizzes were a standard in the history classes. The U.S. History and World History classes terminated the year by doing lengthy re- search on their assigned term papers. Team captains Roger Moody and Carol Bridgewater wait to see which side will be able to answer the next question as Miss Campbell reads the Student Current Events questions to the class. 21 SCIENCE DEPARTMENT We need a bigger resistor explains Mr. Jacobs to his Physics class. Jim was aided by Mr. Jacobs and Mrs. Fagan, the science instructors, and received four 1st place trophies an outstanding rating at the State Science Fair. Many other students participated in the Science Fairs and received many high ratings. 23 Steve Little and Greg Redshaw perform the endless task of doing chap- ter questions in Biology. There's only 32 vertebre here , discovers Ronald as he puts together the Science De- partment's first human skeleton. He assem- bled the skeleton in Advanced Biology Class and found the missing vertebrae before it was finished. 24 Mrs. Fagan is in her fourth year as bi- ology and chemistry instructor at B.H.S. She spends many long hours helping her science students ready themselves for the Science Fairs. J. C. waits after class to question Mrs. Fagan about tomorrow's assign- ment. One gram too many , exclaims Rhonda as she and her lab partners, Stanley and Morris, strive for accuracy in their weekly experiment. 25 FFA 1. to r. BACK ROW--J. Lewton, C. Lister, T. Williams, G. The boys sponsored the annual Barn- warming Dance, where they honored Miss Jessie Gil- bert, a Junior, by selecting her as their Chapter Sweetheart. 27 One of the largest organizations of Barry High School is the FHA, sponsored by Miss Myers. These girls have worked all year selling calendar towels and Tup- perware, or participating in Bake Sales or some other money-making project. The big FHA events this year were the Valentine Ball, Daddy-Date Night, Mother Daughter Tea, and Senior Fare- well. FHA Alphabetically: J. Bergman, S. Bergman, S. Bixby, L. Brace, C. Bridgewater, A. This year our foreign language department was broadened with the new addition of French, which has added a new twist to the lingo of Barry High. We are hoping that French will pave the way for future innovations. Mr. Henderson, who holds a Masters De- gree in French, has guided his students through their first experiences in the language. 32 With a total of fifteen members and the guidance of Mrs. Bethard, the Li- brarians Club aids the students in lo- cating and checking in and out books, magazines, and newspapers. As money- making projects this year, the club has sponsored a number of dances. Besides sponsoring the Librarians Club, Mrs. Bethard takes on the re- sponsibility of the Spanish Club's ac- tivities. At Christmas time, the Span- ish Club sponsored an authentic Spanish Fiesta and as a climax to the evening, they broke a colorful pinata. Librarian's Club: L. to R.: C. Fesler, Mrs. Bethard, N. SCHOOL INTEREST IS MOTIVATED BY THE HUB THE HUB is a popular asset to Barry High and is read by most of the students and teachers. It contains everything from gossip to the latest events of the various organizations. Joyce Raftery and Nancy Moore edit most of the ma- terial under the direction of Miss Hale. 34 What's this marked out here? Dave often has trouble with his homework, and has to look for extra help in Bookkeeping. Occassionally free time is given at the end of the class period to complete tomorrow's assignment. If this is the case, Larry Sheppard and Richard Moyer, without a doubt, will be found applying themselves to the task at hand. It's spelled H-U-B! Co-editors Nancy and Joyce find that tact is not always the best instrument in pushing Hub-staff members to meet a deadline. Hi! lb Left to right: R. Hodson, A. Gully, M. Hodson, S. The 1970 Track team was composed of Seniors Mike Young, Larry Sheppard, and Lloyd Phillips--Juniors Mike Bogan, Steve Rennecker, and Bill Moyer—Sophomores Bob Davidson, Gail Hirst, David Leamon, Gary Rennecker, and Dwight Ala--Freshmen Jim Keller, Jeff Lewton, Randy Gamer, Rick Williams, and Steve Schmidt. Brad Brinkman was on the receiving end of our pitchers this year, and here he calls another one right as one more Tornado goes down swinging. Mike Bogan, one of the main-stays of our pitching staff, cuts loose with another one. Mike had a record of 5--4 and won both games of a doubleheader at East Pike. - BARRY FINISHES STRONG The baseball version of the Barry Tigers had a successful year being over .500 by 1 game at 7--6, which included sweeping a doubleheader at East Pike. There were four Seniors on the team so there will be a strong nucleus of underclassmen for next year. John Keller holds the runner close at first and gives you some idea of all the close plays that take place at first during a ball game. WITH 7—6 RECORD Brads throw to Second Baseman Steve Rennecker is just a shade late, but this usually wasn't the case as Barry out stole their opponents 50--26. Phil Hirst takes a vicious slash at the ball in Barry's 2--1 victory over Griggsville. 59 Gary Rennecker gets up high to get the jump on the Mustangs as everybody tenses for the Tigers' Homecoming Game 52 BARRY Palmyra 48 70 I.S.D. The Tigers received a 2nd place trophy in the Wenois Tourney after losing to West Pike in the champion- ship game by 2 points. The Tigers showed a little inex- perience this year losing two games by one point, four by two points, and one by three points, but should come on strong next year with ten out of twelve lettermen return- ing, and a pre-season familiarity with our coaches. V Getting another easy one Mike Bogan scores off of one of his many steals of the year. Going up over his opponent Mike Young steals this rebound right out of his opponent's hands. Putting his rebound back in for two points Gary Rennecker shows some of the poise he demonstrated as the leading re- bounder this year. Left to Right: Coach Fray, M. Bogan, S. Rennecker, M. Young, L. Phillips, B. Brinkman, R. Bowen, G. Rennecker, S. Little, D. Ala, D. Leamon, G. Hirst, J. Keller, Coach Kovachevich. VARSITY HAS GOOD POTENTIAL FOR 1971 Breaking away from the pre-game huddle, the Tigers get psyched up for thirty-two more minutes of physical and mental competition. 62 Finding time to tie a shoe can sometimes only come dur- ing a free-throw or such, but is usually a welcome break from the constant running from one end of the floor to the other. Warming up before a game, Brad Brinkman makes it look easy, as he was the team's high scorer shooting at a cool fifty percent clip. Steve and Gary Rennecker are ready for action as Lloyd Phillips fights for a rebound in the Tigers' 42--36 Homecoming victory over Unity. The Tigers demonstrate some of the defense that enabled them to win as many games as they did while Ronnie Bowen shows the valuable art of covering two men. 63 FRONT ROW: B. Moyer, J. Stephens, J.
