1968 YR-RAB Barry Community Unit School District 1 Compiled and Edited by Senior Class of 1968 In memory of Mrs. Haddock we are making a dedication of this annual. Although she was with us only a very short time, our thoughts of her will last forever. To have known her was an inspiration. Always a friend in time of need-a very active Chapter Mother in FHA, and a constant compan- ion at all our school activities. To have known her was an inspiration. We are deeply grateful to her family for sharing her with us this short time. 2 DEDICATION TO OUR PARENTS We, the senior class of 1968, dedicate this yearbook to those who have influenced us and encouraged us during our twelve years of school-our parents. To these wonderful people, we would like to express our greatest thanks and admiration. This dedication is our way of showing our gratitude for your patience, under- standing, and cooperation. The entire student body of BHS was called to the gym where ballots were dis- tributed and the votes were cast. Afterwards the floats lined up and the band assembled for a most decorative and enthusiastic pa- rade. Townspeople lined the streets to see the beautiful products of long tedious hours of work on floats and banners. 9 After the Homecoming game, the coro- nation of the queen took place. Tension of the crowd mounted as the announcer broke the seal on the envelope containing the name of the new queen. Applause echoed through the gym as the name of Virginia Lang was read. The Barry Tigers compiled 6 wins against 8 losses for the 1967 baseball sea- son. Leading the batting battle was Larry Darnell, who had a .372 batting average. Stewart Reeve carried a hot bat at the end of the season, finishing with a .300 batting average. The Tigers also had some fast men on the bases. Roger Fesler, Joe Tunget, and Tom Ownby were a constant threat to the pitchers in this respect. Don Steers and Roger Fesler were the main men on the pitching staff. Don Steers had a 5 win and 3 lost record. With a 1 and 5 record, Roger shows promise for next year with his good fast ball. ILLINOIS The overall '67 - '68 season proved to be fairly good. Coach Smith and his Tigers worked their way to a 10 - 12 record, sec- ond place in the Wenois Conference, and a fourth place rating in the Pike Co. Confer- ence. At the Wenois tourney, held at Barry, they captured a three-way-tie for first. Statistically, Tow Ownby lead in as- sists with an average of 10 per game. Pete Grimsley lead in field goal percentage with 47%. Don Steers lead in percentage of free throws made with 78%, in rebounding aver- aged with 9 rebounds per game, and total points scored for the season. One of the main problems was the lack of height. The young Tigers had three boys that posed a constant threat by their accurate shooting from outside. Mike Young, a sophomore, in his first game of basketball, led the scoring parade with a 13 point average. Mike Bogan, our freshman guard, ranked second with a ten point average. Brad Brinkman, a fiery competitor, was third with a nine point av- erage. A good man on the boards throughout the year and an improving scorer is the de- scription of Lloyd Phillips. Richard Moyer, Steve Rennecker, and Billy Bainter improved steadily and should help a lot next year. Com- bined with a scrapping bunch of freshmen, the Junior Varsity team should be much improved and should pose a problem for any team in the county next year. 51 A small but mighty twenty-two in number, the senior class of 1967-68 has successfully passed through the rigors of a high school education. Its passing has not gone unnoticed. Over the past four years, the members of the class have succeeded in compiling quite a favorable record in the fields of athletics, organizational activities, and academic achieve- ments. The class has had their share of baseball and basket- ball team members and cheerleaders. Eight members of the class have been president of some organization, with many others holding various offices. Fifty per cent of the class is consistently on the Honor Roll. For this class, a high school education has been a chal- lenge, a privilege, and an accomplishment. SENIORS Class Officers President................ Richard Albers Kathy Bainter Steven Bradshaw Jeannie Butler Anna Elsenpeter Rhonda Dolbeare 58 An outstanding class, the juniors of 1967- 68 really made a showing in the field of ath- letics. Their members make up eighty per cent of the varsity basketball team and five out of six varsity cheerleaders were juniors. Twenty-five per cent of the class made the Honor Roll, proving their academic inclinations as well. The class worked hard on various money making projects over the school year in order to increase their funds. These juniors are ready to climb the last rung on the ladder to success in high school. Candy sales, car washes, and dances were their business ventures. Members of the class participated active- ly in the field of sports, making the baseball and basketball teams. Sophomore cheerleaders cheered them on. Academically speaking, twen- ty-five percent of the forty-six class members made the Honor Roll. This class is well on its way toward a suc- 62 cessful high school career. Sophomore shows dexterity with baton. For fund raising proj- ects they sponsored bakesales and dances. Enough money was raised to give them a good start for their following'years in school. After adjusting to the routine of high school life, the freshmen settled down to work and placed 30% of their class on the Honor Roll. The class made several contributions to the school by placing several boys on the bas- ketball team and by getting three girls on the cheerleading squad. They eagerly participa- ted in many school activities and backed the teams, as well as the organizations, all the way. The freshmen can look forward to many good times in the years ahead. After electing their officers (Dave Leamon, Pres.; Linda Hoyt, V.Pres.; Linda Brace, Sec.; and Dwight Ala, Treas.), the aggressive pupils began such fund raising projects as candy, garden seed, and book sales besides running the concessions at the basketball games. The eighth grade took top honors on the athletic field by placing players on both the basketball and baseball teams. Competition was tough in the classrooms too, but 21% of the class made the Honor Roll. Having had an excellent year, the class is ready to enter the next phase of their long road to hierher learning. Fifteen of these people have made the honor roll, and we are proud of them. Our seventh grade has been successful in athletics by placing nine boys on the basketball team, and five boys on the baseball team.
