A sincere and true friend, an inspira- tion and guiding example and a com- pletely devoted English instructor. This expresses the feelings of the senior class of 1961 toward Mrs. Reynolds. i 2 THE HUB Vol. 10 No. 9 BARRY, ILLINOIS May 1961 An Editorial: DO IT YOURSELF If America is to fulfill its destiny, the words of the people, for the people, and by the people must apply to many things: TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOURSELF: With the American theory that every man is capable of governing himself, he must be a re- sponsible man able to make his own way in life. Everyone must be able to solve his own problems and help others solve theirs. THINK FOR YOURSELF: Don't catch opinions as you catch cold. Be your own master mind. This is sound educa- tional philosophy. No man's opinion is better than his information. Develop the habit of learn- ing the facts before you make the decision. PRINCIPALS CORNER FAREWELL to the Class of 1961 To the Class of 1961: Soon you will be leaving Barry High School where you have spent half of the 1440 days in the last four years. SAVE FOR YOURSELF: Learn early the art of saving. Pay your- self first. Be prepared for emergencies. Be prepared for whatever turns up, especially for old age. You have had assignments to get, projects to complete, responsibilities to meet, periods to plan for, etc , all because someone or some- thing else made you do it . INVEST FOR YOURSELF: Invest regularly every month. Everyone should take his share of the return. Plan early to own your own home-----insurance and bank savings for emergencies. Live within your means by budgeting your income. PLAN FOR YOURSELF: Have a life plan. It will have many parts: your home and family, religion, and recrea- tional plans, vocational plans (con't on page 4) Soon it won't be mom's responsibility to get you up and to school on time—dad's not going to foot the bills, and your teachers aren't going to make your assignments for you. A good many of these things you are going to have to do for yourself. Each of you is going to have his own small Do It Yourself Program . We at your Alma Mater trust that we have supplied you with the necessary education to prepare you for the (con't on page 6) 3 ROBERT OWNBY President of School Board MRS. MRS. HELEN BOGAN Secretary ctfio. 2an. ecu ell Sckcaxa Time passes quickly. There is nothing we can do about it except to see that it passes fruit- fully as well. If one accomplishes more during one day than another, it is not because he has more time, but because he used his time more advantageously. If, in passing. Time lays up its store of good deeds done, of noble ambitions upheld heroically, of kindness and sympathy scattered with a lavish hand, there will be given to it an enduring quality which nothing can take away. The past is gone. The future has not yet come. The present is all we have. We cannot change the past, nor can we draw upon the future. But each and every member of the Barry High School Faculty greatly encourages the entire stu- dent body to use the PRESENT to the very best of their ability. We looked forward with keen anticipation to the coming of our senior year. Now it has come and gone, and the unknown future stretches out before us. Our Senior year brought both work and play, and our activities were many and varied. The year was opened with the election of class officers, and many class meetings were nec- essary for the planning and production of the yearbook. Would our class pictures arrive by Christ- mas? They did, after we had endured many moments of anxiety. Would we successfully pass all of our academic tests? Well, we did even that. The days of the ball games and parties were exciting and strenuous. As the end of the school year approached, we found ourselves ordering name cards and announcements—caps and gowns—and planning a senior trip—feeling the inspiration of the baccalaureate sermon—choking back tears as we marched in our caps and gowns at graduation. Yes, we have enjoyed our stay at B.H.S. , and we carry away many memories which we shall treasure in the years to come. Oitker We have tried to capture in picture or word the work, play, aspirations, and en- deavors which make up the hour, the day, the week, and the year of school life at B.H.S. The production of this record of your activities has been a gradually unfolding process. It has involved organization and reorganization. We have tried very hard to keep the book well balanced. Realizing that classwork alone does not reflect the complete picture of school life, we have also tried to present the various phases of extracurricular activities. We have had many helpful suggestions from both members of the faculty and students as to ways in which to make our yearbook alive and vital. For this assistance we are grateful. As we present to you your yearbook, we do with the hope that you will like it and that it will bring you many pleasant memories in the years to come. R. Martin, E. McWard, R. Nation, G. Norton, C. The purpose of the Spanish Club is to establish and promote an interest in the Spanish language and to give the student an opportunity to speak the language in every-day sit- uations. A Spanish proverb says, He who would understand his neighbors must put his head into their house. In the Spanish Club we do just that. We hope that by learning about the customs, beliefs, and language of the Spanish-speaking people we may better understand them and their culture. The Science Club is an organization for high school students who are interested in learning more about science than they are able to learn from their science courses. Its yearly program includes demonstrations, project progress reports, movies, a scientific field trip to some industrial organization, and a party at the end of the year. FIRST ROW: L. Williams, D. The substitute student librarians willingly replace those who, for some reason, are not able to be at the librarian's desk. Both groups assist in such chores as mending books, marking books, etc. The speech contestants were entered in the following events: Mike Brinkman, Comedy Reading; John Hubbard, Serious Reading; Pat Syrcle, Prose Reading; Beverley Fee, Verse Reading; and Carolyn Nation, Radio Speaking.
