All parents and sons were introduced. The evening was climaxed with some interesting movies. Section 13 Officers Banquet-- We were host to ninety officers from sixteen schools. A very interesting program was enjoyed. Chain Litters - - We now own three chapter sows, one hampshire and two durocs. The freshmen boys like to borrow these hogs as it gives them a wonderful opportunity to get started in the swine business. Parent Meeting-- Soon after school started we held a parent meeting in order to acquaint our parents with our program of agriculture. We are striving toward more crop projects. After the meeting open house was held. Our group and the townspeople enjoyed a talk and colored slides by Joseph Berger, an exchange student from Switzerland. Refreshments were furnished by the F. F. A. Co-operative Corn Project-- Our one and one half acres of corn neetedone hundred bushels or about seventy bushels per acre. Mrs. Lila Boyd donated the land to have the weeds kept down. The boys shared the work of cultivation throughout the summer. Picnic Grounds-- We have almost completed this school and community service project. We now have two picnic furnaces. The five picnic tables have just been repaired and re-painted. A new light pole has been set but not wired as yet. We hope to do this soon. The community is invited to use this spot. Gymnasium Planting-- We took the responsibility of planning the landscaping and setting of the twenty trees in front of the gymnasium. Milton Grain Show-- As this is being written our sophomore members are readying themselves for the grain judging contest to be held in Milton on December eighth. They have been trying to play better music and give better performances to be more thoroughly enjoyed. The 1951 Band Contest was divided between Pittsfield and Barry. This year all of the Illinois High School District Music Contest will be held at Barry in the high school gymnasium. We were very happy last year to have our Trumpet Trio win first place rating in the State Contest. At one of the P. T. A. meetings the band furnished the program. The music at our home basketball games is also furnished by the band. Two trips have been made--one to Macomb and one to Canton, Missouri, to play at football games. The next trip is to be in the spring which the American Legion is sponsoring for the band students, a free trip to Quincy to see and hear in person Guy Lombardo. Our band is an all year organization. It meets during the summer months and holds concerts in the park every Ssturday night. Besides our high school band we have a Dance Band who presented several numbers at the Christmas Formal Dance. They had a county championship to defend, and were able to do it by taking the conference. Four conference games were played by the Tigers and they were victorious in all of them. The score of the games was as follows: Barry 11 Perry 3 Barry 4 Griggsville 0 Barry 15 Chambersburg 2 Barry 6 West-Pike 5 By winning these four games Barry was eligible to play for the county championship. Their opponent in the championship play-offs was Hardin. Three games were to be played if needed. The first game was played at Barry. In what proved to be a pitching duel. The Tigers edged Hardin by the score of 2 to 1. The highlight of this game was when Rodney Smith stole home with the winning run. Barry collected only one hit, that a single by John Potter. The next game was held at Hardin. This game proved to be a shut- out for Barry. Furniss pitched the Tigers to the county championship by a 4 to 0 victory over Hardin. So the boys are county champions once again. Dick Furniss finished the season with a pitching record of 6 wins and no defeats, and had 58 strikeouts. 48 •V BASEBAU TEAM BACK ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Coach Harold Flynn, Richard Mathews, Bob Smith, Ronnie Reel, Leon West, Ted How- ard, Don Reed, John Billings, James Robertson, Richard Stroheker. BASKETBALL The Tigers had a season record of 5 wins and 18 defeats. The victories were over Bluffs, Nebo, Mt. Sterling, Liberty, and Milton and were played in our gym. Several of the games we lost were by very close scores, but we just didn't seem to be able to gain the victory. Four of the losses were in tournament play. In the Milton Tournament we lost our opening game to the host team. In the Winchester Tournament we met defeat at the hands of Carrollton and Bluffs. In the Regional Tournament at Quincy we met Payson for the third time this season and were defeated by a 38-49 score. One of the outstanding games of the year was the night we initiated our new suits by winning over Liberty by a 45-25 score. Coach Flynn will lose several boys by graduation. Dick Furniss, Marvin Likes, Rodney Smith, Joe Harris, Bruce Smith, Don Wagy and Charles Ervin graduate in June. Our hopes for a team next year are built around John Potter, Jerry Easley, Kyle Main, and Ronnie Oitker. 50 THE BASKETBALL TEAM BACK ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Kyle Main, Forward; Marvin Likes, Center; Harold E.
