SANDEP, USN was born in 8a1Timore, Md., on 16 OcTober 1916. 1-le graduaTed from The U,S, Naval Academy in 1940 and was assigned To USS ASTOPIA CCA-34l. 1-le served in ASTORIA unTil she was sunk in The Battle of Sava lsland in AugusT 1942. He was Then assigned To The precommissioning deTail of USS DYSON CDD-5723 in December 1942. Upon commissioning, DYSON ioined DESRON 28, and Arleigh A. BUPKE's famed H LiTTle Beavers. CapTain SANDER served as Gunnery Officer and ExecuTive Officer of DYSON unTil Transferred To The precommis- sianing deTail of USS PUTNAM CDD-7575 in July 1944. l-le placed PUTNAM in commission GS ExecuTive Officer, serving for 13 monThs in The WesTern Pacific area. ln November 1945, he assumed command of USS CALDWELL CDD-6055 and broughT ThaT ship from The WesTern Pacific To CharlesTon, S.C., where she was decommissioned in April 1946.
