SANDEP, USN was born in 8a1Timore, Md., on 16 OcTober 1916. 1-le graduaTed from The U,S, Naval Academy in 1940 and was assigned To USS ASTOPIA CCA-34l. 1-le served in ASTORIA unTil she was sunk in The Battle of Sava lsland in AugusT 1942. He was Then assigned To The precommissioning deTail of USS DYSON CDD-5723 in December 1942. Upon commissioning, DYSON ioined DESRON 28, and Arleigh A. BUPKE's famed H LiTTle Beavers. CapTain SANDER served as Gunnery Officer and ExecuTive Officer of DYSON unTil Transferred To The precommis- sianing deTail of USS PUTNAM CDD-7575 in July 1944. l-le placed PUTNAM in commission GS ExecuTive Officer, serving for 13 monThs in The WesTern Pacific area. ln November 1945, he assumed command of USS CALDWELL CDD-6055 and broughT ThaT ship from The WesTern Pacific To CharlesTon, S.C., where she was decommissioned in April 1946. Upon decommissioning CALD- WELL, he assumed command of USS LIVEPMOPE CDD-4291 in April 1946 and served in This capaciTy unTil Se-IpTember 1946. Erom OcTober 1946 unTil SepTember 1948 he was an insTrucTor aT The Amphibious raining Command ATlanTic's Ounfire SupporT School in Norfolk, Va. ln OcTober 1948 CapTain SANDEP was Transferred To STaff, Commander Amphibious Eorce ATlanTic where he was AssisTanT Peadiness and Training Officer. ln July 1951 he assumed command of USS MC- CAEEEPY CDD-8603 aT NewporT, PJ.
