A... 1 ge an rea c oo s May, 1959 Dear Students: All high school students look forward with great anticipation to the issuance of the annual year book. There is always a certain amount of excitement connected with each student's desire to see how his picture looks and to read about his achievements in the various phases of the curriculum. However, there should be an even greater significance connected to the ex- citement, and that is the fact that the annual portrays another year of educational development and growth to all the students of the high school. As we look at the pictures and read the articles printed herein, we should not only thrill at the gaiety and fun the various activities have brought to our student body, but we should also respect the purpose and educational value these activities have given our students. Let us not forget the actual production of the year book. The staff members and the ad- visor have devoted many long hours of work in the many areas that are necessary to bring the entire material into this book we call the Bahian. As in the past, this book reflects much serious thinking, many hours of work, and a lot of leadership on the part of our annual staff and the advisor. It is my hope that this year's Bahian will L5 make you proud of our achievements and that it L5 f will serve as a lasting memento of the achieve- ments of Barron Senior High School for the year 1958-59. ZIEROTH, FRANK F. F. A. 1,2, 33 Baseball 2. Pro hee We were traveling to the World Fair which was being held in BARD. It was my former residence formerly known as the Barron-Almena-Ridgeland-Dallas Area, but has progressed so that it is now one of the larger cities of the world. We decided to answer an invitation extended to us by Judy Espeseth Frederickson, so we stopped to see her and there we ran into the former Barb Peterson and all her children. While resting and freshening up before going on, we picked up the newspaper to find out just what was taking place at the World Fair. There on the front page was a picture of Bonnie Bonkrude at the piano, playing a solo at the Crown- ing of Prince Charles, and who do you suppose was the leading soloist there--Ray Young, of course. We also read that a new roller rink had been established by Sharon Knutson, Gloria Quaderer, and Pat Lloyd. Then, reaching the enter- tainment section, we saw Nancy Jane Rohde playing Cleopatra in the new playhouse The Glove. A new movie had just opened up at the Sputnik where Warren Becker, Stuart Olson, and Frank Zieroth were playing in The Tall Men. We also niticed that Jerry Larson, the Mayor of BARD, had presented Ida Olson with a medal for her outstanding work in 4-H. We ran across Helen Olson's marriage counsel column which had some very interesting facts. Having had a delightful gab fest with the girls and having read the paper, we decided to call a taxi and go to the World Fair for the rest of the day. The taxi soon arrived and who do you suppose was driving--Georgia Rogers. Signs along the road showed that Earl Clausen and Bruce Larson had laid it. ' Upon reaching the Fair, Dennis Amundson was there ready to take our tickets. As we moved on into the more interesting part of the fair, we came upon a booth sponsored by the OFI Club. Here we found the officers of this club, Beverly Bishop, Linda Jean Johnson, Alice Fraley, and Marjorie Selvig, advertising their new Sinex home. We came by three military stands only to find Joyce Bruns recruiting for the Air Force, Jerry Carr for the Waves, and Shirlee Pond for the Navy. We heard a barker yell and looked to find Charlotte Glovka trying to draw attention to a stand. On the way to Charlotte's booth, we ran across a novelty building. We went in and the model, Carol Olson, escorted us about. We found many interesting things such as: a flying carpet discovered by Jim Vought, a six-finger bowling ball invented by Larry Wold, Jim Guibord had found a way to fit square pegs into round holes, comfortable schoolroom chairs were presented by Charles Conrad. Lee Solie had some electronic device, but we gave up trying to tell what it was. Russell Maas showed us designs for a crash-proof rubber bridge. Squeek Mulli- kin had distinguished himself by inventing Squeek's Mouse-traps, and Dick Filter was showing the purpose of fil- tered straws. As we came to a room filled with books, we heard Judy Rust's recording of Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend. This room was filled with books and magazines and among some of the outstanding ones were MAD edited by Jack Wisti, HOW TO LIVE A SHORT LIFE SUCCESSFULLY written by Marjory Shearer and published by Doug Worman. E. Joan Johnson had written an autobiography THE LIFE AND LOVES OF JOSIE which was published by Judy Runkle. As we came out of the building, we came upon an auxilliary booth represented by Linda Berg. We were drawn from conversation by a huge commotion at a nearby information booth. lt seemed Mary McGough was trying to give her telephone number to her many admirers. We walked on until we saw a hair dresser, and just for curiosity we went in and here were Sharon Olsvig, and Charron and Charlotte Kallenbach trying to curl Larry Lloyd's hair for the olympics after giving him a shampoo with Roberta McLeod and Sandie Kuehndorf's Shampoo, --their picture was on the bottle, too. Speaking of the olympics, we decided we had better hurry or we would be too late to see the football game. We just got there in time to see Charlotte Ormson lead the cheers as the All American Football Team came on with Larry Lloyd leading. After this we saw a girls' tumbling team starring Rosemary Topol, Eileen Reddig, and Vonnie Macak. Just as we were coming out of the grandstand, we saw the chief of police, Adrian Massie, carrying a small child who was lost. Soon former Judy Marvin came running up to claim the child. All were happy again. .36- There was a beauty contest near the grandstand so we decided to take that in. The program handed to us revealed several familiar names. Those we knew in the contest were Beatrice Hartung, Barbara Hockert, Diane Hudson, Janice Jacobs, Carol Jacobson, and Janice Basacker. We did not recognize any of the others. Just as I was about to close the pamphlet, I noticed the names of the judges included: Charles Stair, Alfred Lentz, DeWayne Nelson, and Martin Diesterhaft. Not waiting for the judges' decision we went into the Midway and since we were getting a little hungry, we went up to a hamburger stand owned by Gary Boedeker. Bertha Stoeberl was a waitress here and Robert Novak was a waiter. lust as we were about to indulge in a little snack, we heard a commotion at the other side of the stand. Senator Connley Han son and his two stenographers, Veronica Stauner and Kathy Spielman, were having a little trouble getting the exact de- tails on the disappearance of a container of mustard. On the way to a parade, we passed a Slenderel1a booth run by Elaine Millerman and Glaphery I-Ioff, and direct- ly across the way from it was a Body Building stand run by Ian Swenson. We passed a horticulture building and un- der the influence of curiosity, we looked in. Here were Mervin Hanson, Eugene Gilles, Bob Hartzell, Allen Klien, Mike Nelson, and Art Olson busy as beavers. What were they doing? I wish I knew. We reached the parade grounds just in time to see the last float appear. It was really a beautiful float driven by Ray Louis with Carol Rogers, Linda Johnson, Marilyn Koster, and Sherry Sindelar adding to the beauty of it. A band came after the float. Inoticed several familiar faces in the band. Dick Kirkwood and Mary Lee Larson were on trumpet, Richard Snyder was playing the trombone, Ruth Bjugstad was playing the baritone, and JoAnn Dietrich was on the sax. There, at the head of the band were two majorettes, Janelle Taylor and Kathy Schlough. This conclud- ed the parade. As we were about to leave, we came upon this strange-looking building shaped like a siamese cat. We found, by reading a little sign, that it was designed by Jerry Schmidt. Again our curiosity overcame us and we entered to find Sharon Gubbin scratching a siamese cat. She told us she was official cat scratcher here and Jerry Harbaugh was a mortician--he buried all the dead mice. We were unable to talk with Ron Mimo, It seemed he was running the Tunnel of Love and went through on each ride. On the way to our Hatch we decided to stop at Huck's Supper Club run by Jerry Novinski as if you hadn't gues- sed. We were about to enjoy a delicious meal when we saw Bruce Tabor sweeping up some broken glass. lt seemed he had gotten a janitor's job. We had no more than started our meal when Mert Cowley, Larry Frederick, Paul Bader, Joe Balog, and Larry Eliason walked in. Mert explained to us that he owned several beverage trucks and these men worked for him. They were having their annual convention. We were all set for a quiet evening at the hotel. As we turned the T.V. set on, we tuned in the Bob Cummings Show. Only it seemed Marv Amundson was taking Mr. Cummings' place. I can still hear him now, saying, Hold it, I think you're going to like this picture. He was sensational! The commercial was a bit different. The offi- cial candy taster at Curtiss Candy Company, Marj Curtis, was the narrator. We tuned in the Jackie Gleason Show to find Pat Fankhauser as host. He had a very interesting show. That sensational comedian, Janice Kilmer, started it off. Then an interview with the politician, Gerhard Bergman, who was interrupted by his stenographer, Marlys Broker, who insisted he should take his ulcer pills, and then to conclude the program, that new hit tenor, Frank Hollister, sang one of his latest hits. Thinking we had had an eventful, and very interesting day, we retired. . 37 . E Q , , Y Via , ' A 1 1 ln T, i 4 ,z Q1 Q I 2: I Q 5, I , 1 K Class Advisor Mr. Hoar 4 Hin AUTOGRAPHS I SGPHOMORES P.
